I bought this t.c electronics effects processor for hm.. 185 bucks and I wasn't very happy with it so I exchanged it for slightly better one Lexicon MPX500  for 385 bucks. I'm still
not very happy with it

does anybody have any suggestions on which effects to get? what brands
model?  I'm willing to spend around 400 bucks for it. I'm interested in recording
so I really want a good effects processor.

WOW, that's alot of dough to fork out.  i bought my alesis nanoverb 16bit for about $100 and i couldn't be happier.  it does everything i need, and i do recording also.

Alesis Midi Verb 4 You can Find one on Ebay for $100 or less

I use preset 11 and 22

As far as the lexicon goes that is a great processor also you probally just need to learn how to use it.

For live any of the Alesis are good, I use the Microverb 4 with the efx in the Dfx 12. Any combination of plate or spring with chorus gives a good overall effect.  The thought has crossed my mind a few times get another proc and use it on the output of the mic compressor to just efx the mics. Anybody tried this?  

I usually dont record with efx. I like to record the vocals out of the compressor and mix later with the music or record and track live with the music before it leaves the comp...Also one can mix thru the system mixer and efx units during mixdown too..A software like Sonar3 has many different plugins that one can apply to any track during mixdown with virtually any efx you want and more control... If its not right its a simple undo and try it again..

 Ive been using this Plugin on Winamp It is overbearing on some songs but after you learn how to trim it, it works fairly well....  I think there is a small reg fee but well worth it...

To evaluate any efx or audio proc one has to use it in all situations and genres and learn the capabilities and limits it has. It's not the equipment that determines the overall quality it's the amount of experience and knowhow of the folks using it..

I agree, not happy with the Lexicon?  What sound are you trying to get?  Lexicon (especially that model & higher) is some of the best out there.

Alot of people say that the lexicon is a really good effects processor.
I guess I need to play with it a little bit more. I only got it for 2 days

This is how I connect the effects to my mackie ONYX mixer.
I connected the AUX send to the input of the effects and the output goes to the
AUX return.  I have to play with the AUX send and return buttons on the mixer
a bit.

The effectts distort the music a bit and sorta kills the bass. Is there a way
to send the vocal(mic) to the effects only and leave the music alone without
going into the effects?

Sounds like you are running the Aux send on the music as well.  Turn it down (off) on the music channels.  Turn ONLY the Aux send on the channels you want effected.  You may also have the input on the processor set too high - watch the clip light.  Shouldn't need to be more than halfway up.  Run the mix & output on the processor wide open, you will be controlling the amount of effect from the board.

I would also run the output of the effects into an available channel instead of the Aux return.  This will give you the ability to use a slider as opposed to the little rotary knob & you will be able to eq the effect as well.  Just make sure you don't "send" the effect to itself via the Aux send on the effects channel - nasty feedback will occur.

Yea Lonman I run the mic channel sends at unity or slightly above and the music channels lower.. Have you ever tried putting a seperate proc on mics only such as inserting between the mic compressors and return? I would like to try it in certain situations like duets and really boosting the chorus....

I think I turn the input levl on the effects too high.
I did try to send the effects output(left ,right) back to two availalbe channels on the mixer, but it sounds awful. Maybe i'll try it again with a lower input levl to the effects.

I have done something like that in the studio if I needed a specific effect, not so much live - not that it wouldn't work, but the aux sends do basically the same thing & it will allow as many channels to utilize the effect as opposed to just the one channel that it is plugged into.

I use a Digi Tec 300 foot petal and I love it...many presets as well as you can custom 40 of your own personal sounds. pretty cool to step on something on stage with a toe and change the sound in the middle of a song It has a bypass as well right there on the floor.
I do a solo Character show so I use it for that.
When I do Karaoke show's I just run a slap back echo for the singers off my berringher pro-fx mixer.
They dont get to step on my toy

I run a Behringer Virtualizer Pro unit in my rig and am very pleased with it.  They're down to about $100 now.

For studio work or recurring performances, the Voiceworks unit from TC Helicon is an amazing product.  It's a bit pricey (or was last time I checked).

I agree with others about using the equipment properly to get the best sound. I use Alesis Midiverb 4 for my effects and I love the unit. I had to read the manual carefully both on the effects unit and my mixer and tweaked things around a bit until it sounded good to my ears. I am not means a musician or a tech, I just know what sounds good to me. Now, even several of professional musician friends think that my systems sounds great. I am so glad I took the time to learn the system and tweaked it around enough to know how it works.

I agree that the alesis units are good, but the lexicon is superior in my opinion. While you are working with a more or less entry unit from that mfg., it retains a lot of the qualities of its bigger brothers (way higher in terms of cost and heavily used in major studios). I have used both Alesis and Lexi in my studio. The gent indicated that running music through the effects processor being over board is correct. If you are recording live instruments u should not be imprinting the effects on the music. One reason is that u are getting nasty distortion unless you r running individual effects on each instrument. You are overloading the unit. Try running just a touch of reverb on kick drum and snare. Ease the effect up until you just barely hear the reverb on each. That should give u plenty, then mix the two to your liking. Otherwise you are going to be listening to swamp music.  If you are really down and out on the lexi, look into tc electronics. They make some nice gear in your price range.

You do realize this is a karaoke site right?  No live instruments to mic or effect.
