so one show you went to had bad sound and they didn't know what they were doing with the laptop/kiosk, and you're not sold?

What about the computerized system WITH books? That's the way I do it, have been that way for over a year, and I'd never go back. Chip (the guy that posted above you) has been computerized for over three years!

Check out this thread!

Matt's system works very well! Easy for him to operate and we got books to PAW through. And he keeps a spare CDG machine for those of us who bring our own discs. The BEST of both worlds---and his books are VERY NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!! Clearly this is a Karaoke show catering to THE CUSTOMERS!

Web based or HTML interfaces for ticket entry suffer the same problems as regular websites do.   How many times have you been purchasing something online when you see the warning "Do not click the submit button twice, or you may be charge twice"

c. staley's approach is interesting though and almost what we're gearing AKDJ towards.  A non html UI for the end user.   (Btw staly, very original program, kudo's)

Despite being a hard core geek and loving tech I have to look at my customers. My customers come in all shapes/sizes.  While the younger college frat crowd may be perfectly attuned to using a PC for song searching and entry, our older more mature crowd would be completely lost and tends to prefer the old method of browsing through books and handing in a song slip.  We have to cater to everyone.

So for now, until the old crooners shrivel up and die books are here to stay.  I think we'll definetly see the move from traditional karaoke with songbooks and ticket slips to fully automated kiosk systems within the next decade.

Just wanted to add a bit more...

Alcohol and computers can mix, and you can setup your kiosk to be %90 hackproof.  Just make sure the computers that the drunken patrons use are not the ones running the show, just dumb terminals with restricted access.

I wish I could quickly find a picture of our dumb terminal to post.  We tried using it (and the html interface) to allow customers to que up songs, after we found some bugs in our approaches it got turned into a chat/webbrowsing machine so customers could interact with folks watching the stream, or use it to put messages up on the karaoke screen.

Which is smarter? Just sticking to making/selling karaoke, while people all over the world create software FOR FREE that helps you sell it, or trying to compete with them and keeping it a closed loop while you blow your money into an industry (software) that you(the karaoke manu) knows nothing about?

I keep my regular books around (small venues, so I use 2 books by artist name and 2 by song name), but I also invite people to come up and ask my wife if we have a certain artist or song, and she'll look it up on the other laptop.
