lonman,

in terms of vocal sound quality, the  external effects processor will sound
better than the built in effects in the DFX12????

It's almost always true that individual components are going to sound cleaner & better than the units that have all built in.  But since you are just using it for home use, the DFX 12 (or even 6 if you don't need a bunch of channels) would be just fine.

How much does one of those external effect processor cost?
Do mackie make them?
What are some of the models you would suggest?
And where can I buy them?

You can get something like mentioned above, me personally I would go for something like the Lexicon MPX110, although this runs about $150.
Mackie doesn't make any processing gear yet.
americanmusical.com musiciansfriend.com are good places too.

Topherm,
Thank you for the advice. :) I won't hook up my mackie mixer into my
home theather system :) I'm a bit picky when it comes to sound quality.
I think i'm willing to spend another grant to get the semi-professional PA karaoke system and just  use the  the home theather sytem for watching movies and listening to music.

Beringer makes speakers too? I only find a few brands at the guitar center.
Mackie, JBL , yamaha.

Are there any other places besides the guitar center I can buy those semi-professional audio stuff from?

Also take a look at the Mackie SRM350 speakers - great choice for home use.  These are powered so you wouldn't need an external amp & if you are picky about your sound, stay away from Behringer (just my opinion).

Thanks guys for the great advice/info.

Since I don't need that many input channels, I think the Mackie DFX6 is a better choice for me.  The only difference between the DFX6 and DFX12 is the number
of input chanels? Every else is exactly the same?

I went to mackie's website and saw they also have those firewire card so you can
connect to your laptop/pc and record. I think that's cool. Too bad the
DFX6 and DFX12 do not have the firewire cards. :) the mackie onyx models have
the firewire cards, but do not have the effects. *sighs* :D

I think i'm going to go with the powered speakers.
