I recently finished singing in a 6 week competition and am wondering what the judges were listening too. There were people who sang flat for 3/4s of the song who finished higher than some of the better singers. I didn't place in the top three, but I am not complaining about that, there were some singers there who deserved it way more than I did. My question though, is, how can a contestant have boyfriend trouble on ballad night, become so upset in the middle of the song that throws the mic down and runs into the ladies room in tears, and finish first? FYI the judges were randomly picked from the audience each week, and very few of them judged more than once................ Oh well, congrats to the winners anyway, I was only out to have fun

Now you know why many hosts will not do singing competitions.

AT BEST a karoake contest is NOT a singing contest but rather an entertainment contest.

I'd say the average karoake show is just a popularity contest, though.

This post seems to come up over and over again on this board about how unfair karaoke contests seems to be, to which I have some sage advise:

LIFE AIN'T FAIR!!!

The sooner you deal with that the happier yall will be in your lives....let it all just roll off your back and move on!!

Against my better judgment - I held a contest at the last bar I worked at.
The owner decided it was a good idea and started to advertise  a weekly contest which started at 11pm.  NEEDLESS to say people from MARS started to show up at the bar at 10:59 PM just to enter the contest and NOT BUY ANYTHING.  The owner became disouraged and started to cancel the contest THAT NIGHT.... That didn't sit to good with the regulars who where there all night long.  THEN he deicded to change some of the contest RULES mid stream....... WORSE thing I ever was involved in.   I don't work there any longer because soon after canceling the contests he started to cancel Karoke night all together... Go figure.

What I think WE need is a Contest Manual to be written so we can have some fair and impartial and FUN contests

Yeah, contests are a pain.  The regulars who are there just to have fun hate it, and I can't say I blame them.

What I absolutely under no circumstances will allow myself to be involved with (in ANY capacity) are these "contests" that have big $ prizes like 1000, 1500$ prizes. End up attracting PROFESSIONAL singers who are in bands or who have appeared on events(e.g. there was one contest recently that the winner was leader of her own blues band and the second place person had appeared on LIVE AT THE APOLLO on TV) or those that travel from CONTEST to CONTEST state to state to compete.  Sorry kids, but KARAOKE is NOT PROFESSIONAL SINGERS to my mind. So I make it a rule not EVER to participate in CONTESTS under ANY pretext or circumstance. Karoake is there for the average Joe (or Josephine) to get up and warble in a drunk and utterly fun manner and have a ball. And if they actaully are naturally gifted singers then thats so much the better and adds a level of excitement. Introduce COMPETITION and all you get are BRUISED EGOS, HARD FEELINGS and alot of unhappy people. PARTICULARLY if there are LARGE CASH PRIZES involved. Then it is no longer "Karaoke" but ventures into the realm of Star Search, American Idol or Professional competitions.
