A scratched disc wouldn't ruin or harm equipment, it would either play with graphic garble, skip, worst case scenerio is it just plain wouldn't load up. Sounds like an excuse from that kj that they just don't want to play a customers disc - lame excuse.

I've heard of many kj's that claim they will NEVER allow a burned disc (although I havn't actually found one that hasn't).

if a disc is handed to me and it looks bad, before I accept it from them, I'll show them the faults, and explain that it may not work right. Only had one person give me any crap about it!

As a Singer, I bring my own personal burns with me to shows. Only a few KJs have told me that they could not play them (and the reason given was that they were running off a PC and didn't have a CDG player hooked up to their system). Like Lonnie said, as a KJ, you just can't have every song out there. There's a few select songs that I happen to sing (some Broadway songs and some novelty/obscure stuff), and there's just no major demand for it. I don't realistically expect a KJ to buy those discs just to satisfy me (although that would be nice).
As a KJ, like Matt, I will examine the disc before I put it in my player. If the discs looks dirty or smudged, I will clean it. If I see that the disc has noticeable markings, scratches or pinholes in it, I will inform that person that there is a strong possibility his/her disc will not play in my machine. Most of the people have trusted my judgement on that, and taken their disc back. If I happen to recognize that I have a particular song/version that someone has handed me, I will pull my disc (only if I know it off the top of my head), and give that person back their disc.
There are a few KJs out there that just don't want to be bothered with the responsibility of handling other people's discs. I can accept that, but at least be honest about it. If you're lame about it, I probably won't ever come back to your show.

Hey buddy,
As a KJ as well I can tell you that in my opinion there is no reason why a KJ should be offended if you want to play your own disc! The comment was made earlier and I completely agree... even if it is an inferior version to the one I've got, if it makes you feel good to sing to it because you're used to it, you like the back-up vocals or whatever, then it's the best way to go because that's the way to make sure you're having as much fun as you can!
I want you to have as much fun as you possibly can and if bringing your own disc accomplishes that, then there's good times all around. It makes for a better show when your singers are having fun. It's just catchy! Even if I'm not quite in the mood to run a show, if my people are having a blast, I can't help but have a blast right along with them.
Woopeeeee!!!! I'm hosting tomorrow night...
Elisha

I remember when I first started going out to Karaoke (around 1995). One of the first shows where I became part of the KJ's "Following," I used to bring my own discs with me to sing from. I was just beginning to build my personal collection, and had about 30 discs when I started going to his shows. During the corse of 1 year, that built up to about 100 discs (and I used to share them, with others at the show). Anyway, in my early days of going to his shows, he approached me and told me that he didn't want to use my discs. I asked him why, and he told me that it was making him look bad as a KJ and a business, and that he had over 3000 songs (back in '95, that was a lot). I called him on that statement. I pointed out the fact that I was not competition (since I wasn't a KJ at that time, and nowhere near even considering it), and that he didn't have certain songs that I liked to sing. I then told him that if I couldn't sing the songs that I felt like singing, then I wasn't having as much fun as I would like to have. He then said I could continue to hand him my discs, but he asked me not to let other people know that I was using my own discs. 3 weeks later, he suddenly came over to me and asked if I had a particular song in my collection (one that he did not have) because someone else wanted to sing that song. As it so happened, I did have it. After that, my library was always welcome to anyone at his show.

Actually. karaoke is a gigantic pain in the arse for the KJ to begin with. I don't know why anyone in their right mind would want to do it, especially for the amount of money they get paid.

I don't mind if singers bring their own discs. If there are a bunch of singers going back and forth between each others, it can require more attention to keep everything straight, but that's fine. I just don't understand why so many people do not seem to protect their discs very well. Many come up in no case or sleeve - I try to store and handle them gently, but I'm not always well set up for a bunch of loose discs like that. I've been swamped many times. I do prefer the "sing one, bring one" approach when people are singing off of personal discs.

I don't have a problem with singers bringing their own disks. If the disk is dirty and will not play - not my fault. If you bring it up by it self I will put it into a sleeve for protection while it is with me. If it is scratched beforehand - not my fault. If you want me to use your disk, put your name on it so I can return it to the rightful owner. Accidents happen and if it goes to the wrong person - sorry but can't babysit your disks.
If I have the disk I would rather use mine. just me - one less disk to deal with

I agree the excuse is lame where it concerns damaging the KJ's equipment... However, if the disc is scratched siginificantly it could cause a hiccup in the show. If the graphics were garbled or skipped so much the song couldn't be done or if the disc won't load then there is a "break" in the show and either the next singer comes up while the singer with the bad disc decides on another song or the singer with the bad disc remains at the mic making their next selection.
That being said, we allow people to bring their original disc and hope they are well maintained (& I must say that 95%+ that are brought to our shows are in great condition). Additionally the same will happen with a KJ's disc (those of us who are not pc based). Whether the problem is caused by the singer's disc or the KJ's disc it must be handled professionally and, hopefully, with a little humor. :)

I did eat 2 pizzas this evening...
It's a pain when you have the entire rotation in pc. I don't expect other pc kj's to play my disc I know it is a pain. I have the option to play cd+g and as long as someone ask I will do it. Most of the time I take their disc and don't use it, my library is extensive and 99 times out of 100 I have what people are wanting to sing.

geez, I'm sorry for asking a question before searching the archives...I realize that we don't want to waste valuable bandwidth and time when we have such important topics to discuss such as "what's your favorite song", "do you dress up to sing karaoke", "how many of you use karaoke to pick up chicks?" "photos of your pets"...and let's not forget the time honored classic....the "song chain"....
