I'm just wondering does the KJs feel offended when a singer brings in their own karaoke disc?  I go to many places down here in Austin and most don't keep up with the latest songs and if I find ways of getting the new songs I acquire it.   So I take my cdg to most shows to get them to play it for me.  I feel its some new blood in their shows, and I always want to do songs that no one does.  So I'm just seeing what other opinions are.

if you browse the forums, you see this topic come up again and again.

It really depends on the Karaoke company or venue. One will allow it, another won't. Most of the time, merely ask the kj, and you'll find out. Don't be offended if they say "NO"... if it's important to you, don't go back.

Some hosts look at a customer with their own disc as they're saying to the host "your songs suck, here's MINE".

Speaking personally, I love it when a customer brings in their own disc, even if it's INFERIOR to what I have... it's what the customer likes, is used too (they probably practice it at home, or at other venues), so if it makes the customer happy, then I'm doubly pleased.

Just don't go to Salina, Kansas! (sheesh!)

I used to fall into the catergory that knightshow talks about...

Now..i don't mind soo much. They tell me..if i had it...they wouldn't bring it...so...i try and order it for them. In fact..doing this has brought MORE people to my karaokes.

I ALWAYS bring my own discs---simply cause almost none of the KJ's have what I sing. In fact Ive gone to several with 20k or more or massive computer assortments and NOPE they dont have whats on my discs. So theyll play mine and then they ask--hey where can I get that disc! Except where its computerized and they DONT have a back-up CDG machine. Then Im just SOL.  So I wont be back to that place.

It always does give me a bit of satisfaction to hear them claim OH WE'VE GOT 50000 songs! If I we dont have it then its not out there! Then whip out my discs and simply ask What about THIS one?! Then look at the look on thier face! :) And get the lame "SORRY cant play your disc cause we ONLY have the computer!"

I did search the threads but the words I gave for the search came up with other subjects that I didn't need.  So I figure that this could just be a bump for a refresher.  dunno

As Swingkat, I like that going on too when I bring in songs off the list, so then others could ask "where's that on the list?"  so a fire can be lit under the KJs to get on their game especially going to the computer only KJs.

Hello everyone, I'm new here, but not new to karaoke, nor music. As for the question about bringing music.. As someone who goes around to different venues to sing (only) I've noticed that some KJ's limit their selections to the genre most liked by wherever they are at. Such as Country.. They might still have a little rock and classics mixed in, but for the most part, 90% will be one genre. Honestly don't like these kind of places, so when I go to one (which is about twice a month to one particular bar), I bring my own CD+G's. This KJ's collection is around 4000 songs at most. There are 2 other karaoke spots I visit as well which have computerized karaoke with about 13,000 or more songs and it's more varied.

So, in the cases where I know the KJ operator will have plenty of stuff, I dont bother bringing anything. And I've never had a issue with bringing my own. IF they don't like it, they can just tell me they cant play it and I dont have a issue with it.

Lastly, I wish some of these karaoke companies would stop punching out crap music. If it sounds like it came off a $100 Casio keyboard from Wal-Mar, then I dont think it should be on the KJ's books. But more times then not, I see dupes of songs on their books.. Why? Why list crappy versions of a song along side the quality versions?

Anyways, I'm new here, I have my own little music studio in my home, I'm also one of those who practices my songs before I go to karaoke..

as much as I hate to admit it, I will bring my own discs when I go out. I'm usually patient enough with a picky venue and can sing something on what they have... but it's probably gonna be the last time I would be going there, and I'll tell the management why!

Now Kurt, you know not "all" places that are computerized fall into your post. If they don't have a backup player, MTU will allow you to scan in a disc (song or whole disc), and you can do that while another selection is playing. Then at the end of the night, those temp files are deleted when the "hoster" program shuts down. I know some folks are worried that their tracks will be 'stolen'...

I don't even have a cd drawer in my show pc so people don't have to deal with that.

Matt--unfortunately youre one of the VERY FEW Ive come across running a puter-oke system that actually keeps a G machine handy---and none of these has suggested scanning as you suggested. In fact thats the first ive heard of someone actually doing it that way.  As to them deleting the file at the end of the night-I'd have no way of verifying it short of standing there and watching them delete the file directly. So I'd be a bit leery of the scanning. Not all have INTEGRITY. So I'd be real LEERY of SUBSIDIZING thier library! Again your way is best and most flexible- puter terminal for those who want to browse by puter, but books for us that like to paw thru them and a G machine on hand for those that bring thier own. I belive there is a thread somewhere on the issue of KJ's loading up their puters off discs that people bring in with them-without the singers knowing there doing it.

oh I understand your feelings, and as I said, it's why I personally don't have the cd drive in my ssytem.

But the temp files is part of the MTU hoster package. You can read about it at mtu.com!

My friend Kim Pooschke runs a show outside Oregon City on Wed and Thurs nights... great show, with BOSE speakers... she's as big fanatic as I am on staying on top of the newer music, and she keeps her books updated!

If you're ever free on those nights, let me know, and I'll show you to her gig!

I will ALWAYS allow a customer's disc - kj's can't have everything out there nor should they try (IMO).  Demigraphics & crowd dictates what a kj should & shouldn't have, if it's not going to be a regular song or genre, then I don't get it.  Even if I have it, no hard feelings if they don't look in the book, HEY it's a song they are comfortable with - bring it on!  If it's a disc I have I will let them know that I do HAVE the same disc, but won't disallow it if they bring it up & I do happen to have it.

BRING IT ON!!!!

As a matter of fact I had a (friendly) rival kj come in running one of those 40+K computerized systems come in tonight & said I had stuff in my books he WISHED he had but can't get.

Almost all of my regulars bring in thier own discs and always sing off of them, even when they are discs I have. I love it because:

A) Less wear and tear on my discs
B) They always get the version they are comfy with so they sing more confidently
C) LESS SLIPS!!!

I use MTU'S Hoster program also. It does let you import a singers song from their disc. When the program is closed out the song is gone. There is no way to keep. MTU made sure of that. They are a Company that is legal and won't let their software keep the song. I will let anyone bring in their own disc. I can play it on the computer or on a player it doesn't matter to me. :oh yeah:

I always let them do it too.  I think I have better versions of the songs, but they insist on bringing versions they are comfortable with.  I have about 4 or 5 people who do this, and they leave the CDs with me.  Some bring mini-books of CDs.  I hate this, because it takes up space and there's more of a chance of my CDs and theirs getting mixed together.  For a while, I asked them to bring up the CDs as they sing and tell me what number and song...one would think that is easy enough...but then they would tell me the wrong number and hold up the show.   Argh.  Bottom line is, whatever please them (within reason), I try to do.

One KJ said he was concerned that my disk could be scratched or otherwise damaged to the point it would ruin his equipment.  Was he correct to be concerned about this?

Best thing you can do if you're concerned with your own discs getting scratched up is to give the kj BACKUPS of your CD+G discs.  Never give him the originals.  So then if it does get scratched, no problem!

I bring my own CD wallet along with my own song list so I can easily refer to what I have.  Instead of leafing through my CDs, I browse my OWN song list.  Very handy and it makes it easy for others to peruse my song list if they want to do something special.

As I KJ I don't mind if you bring your own discs to my show, As Karaoke becomes more and more at home , many singers have their own discs and mfg they are used to singing.   But if you DO bring your own discs to shows here is a list of DO'S & DON'TS

Do - Bring a scratch free disc perfectly working
DON"T hand me a disc that looks like your dog chewed it first
Do - Bring a single jewel case or sleeve (with your name on it) so you can hand me your discs in it.
DON't hand me your disc unprotected and then blame me when it gets scratched
DON'T look at me like its MY fault when your disc starts skipping or the graphics get garbled on the big screen

DO - bring your discs in good condition in a protected sleeve with your name on it
with a request slip listing track you want AND song title so I know what song should be playing.  I DON"T WANT ANY SURPRISES as a KJ.

And speaking personally if you're going to be taking your own collection on the road from show to show  ....make an archive copy of the orginal just in case some other KJ who is not as careful as I am - drops or sratches you favorite CDG

When I actually have a night off and get to go out and sing I take my own disc. I am the only KJ in my area with a decent size book most have 3000 to 4000 songs.
When people bring a disc to my karaoke I hate it. I always have a better version than them, their disc are always scratched, and I have to switch from pc to karaoke player.
