Singers will sing what they want or go elsewhere.  I remember years ago when I first got into Karaoke, the KJ had a rule where there was no back to back slow songs.  It made the rotation confusing to new patrons who often felt skipped over (in essence they were).    However, she never discouraged anyone from signing whatever they wanted.  After a few months she was replaced with a start-up KJ couple.  They were terrible with sound and did not click with the crowd.  Just because a song is a ballad or has a slow tempo, does not necessarily mean it will bore the crowd.  Some singers have such great voices and interpretive skills that their renditions are moving and inspiring.  Give me a well controlled rendition of a ballad any day over a drunk screaming his way through an up-tempo song.

If slow nunbers are that boring, dont include them in your book; its that easy. Then no one will sing them. and those who like singing slow song will not go to your show.
Its the same to other kind of songs. If I as a KJ dont like those punk and heavey metal crowds then I will make sure my book will not have those songs.

There are a few things I don't quite understand about karaoke, like why the need to have a 'dance' music in between. songs esp slow one. The normal ans. is that those fast dance number are to make the non singers happy. I think this is not 'karaoke'.

See I do go to disco and I dont dance; now will the DJ play a karaoke song for me. No way, and I dont expect  such treatment. But no one will be up set if I sing at the top of my voice to the dance tune thats being played.

Likewise non singers in a karaoke pub/club should only dance to the tunes being sung by the singers.

Lets be fair, if I want to dance I go to my fev DJ show not to a karaoke place.

My GAWD I hate venues like this! I've been in them, and literally waited two turns because the kj was being a "dj" and mixing the singers around to where it would 'sound best'... him being mostly a country music listener, would automatically put anybody that did classic rock or ROCK songs after tons of other people.

I stopped going into that place when he flat out told me what he was doing. complaints to the management did nothing even when several people complained that "he skipped me"... finally, they let the guy go when they told him "first in, first out"... because he felt that wasn't being a kj.

always amazed me that type of rationale, and those type of singers that would put up with that. I guess it's all in what you're used to!

To each as own.  The place I go is a neighborhood bar.  A little pool, a little Karaoke, a little chit-chat, and an entertaining show.

I'm not to good at meeting strangers so at the big Karaoke places I just sit around bored until it's my turn to sing.

Another place I go, the pretty blonde KJ comes around and asks me if I want to sing.  She is real personable and friendly.  I really like that.  She can pretty much run the show how ever she wants to.  I sing more when there aren't many people there and she needs me to sing.

Upbeat all the way !!!!  The only time I will sing a ballad is if someone puts in a request for me to sing one..... then the KJ slips it in at a convenient time

We wouldn't dream of telling people they can't do the type/tempo of music they like!!!  And YES! IT IS A PARTY!!  The kind of party where you will be cheered for regradless of what type/tempo of music you sing!  I sure hope that those of you who don't like ballads, country, headbanging, whatever, etc. auld nauseum don't let the singer know it....  Wow!  I think if I got that sort of vibe from somewhere I'd be ticked and then I'd make sure you heard it again!  :reddevil:

Sorry for the rant but I can't imagine listening to one type of music all night, unless that is what each singer there wanted to sing (& I haven't been to a place like that yet).  We just got back from our show where we heard everything from Strawberry Wine, Baby Got Back and Lynrd Skynrd and loved it!!!!

Seems like a lot of times so much depends on the KIND of crowd that's there. At the place I run it, one night they yell & go crazy for any song sung, whether slow or fast, then the next night, still appreciative, but waaaay laid-back for some of the very same tunes. We're pretty heavy on the Country songs in this area, 3 out of every 4 on some days and nights, but if we get fun-loving, lively tables of customers you can pretty much get away with singing anything & still bask in the glory of a slow song. I would say many of us K.J.'s have dealt with those kinds of hot & cold nights back to back, and no matter what we do to pep it up, sometimes the crowd type you get is the crowd type you're stuck with. Although song selections can be a big factor, I would also base it on the "liveliness" of the people listening. Prefer upbeat stuff myself, but hey, as long as we're still makin' money....       -Chris

That is not a viable solution at all...people would just bring their own CDs

So what if people bring their own CD+Gs, most KJs don't mind it.  It's called customer service.

Um, that sort of defeats the purpose of what you were saying about deleting slows songs from your book.  As far as customer service, I personally could take or leave karaoke, from a business aspect.  I only host it on friday nights.  If it ceases to be fun to me, I will cease to be doing it.  I am considered by a lot of people to be really good at it (being a host), because I am interactive and upbeat, plus, I have built a solid rapport with all the singers.  I myself really don't care what they sing, if it makes them happy.  I understand that is their moment in the spotlight.  I do my best to make that moment special for them.  That said, a couple of weeks ago, we had a rare slow night, and people chose to sing one slow song after another.  I had some people walk out without singing (even though I asked them to) and they later told me it was boring.  I've never been accused of that.  I do like the one suggestion I heard in this thread where you tell the person they would sound great singing (fill in with upbeat song).  I actually told someone that, now he is all amped up to wow the crowd on Friday.  This is a guy who does great on 60's frat rock, but he joined in the slow brigade.  Plus, we were missing some of our more energetic singers.  Also, just so you know, I don't play any dance music.  I get the rotation moving as quickly as possible.

The truth is, the money isn't all that great.  I could easily make in one wedding what I do in 4 or 5 karaoke shows, with a lot less effort.  If I had to stand and listen to slow songs all day, I would hang myself with my microphone cord.  Nah, actually, I'd just stay home Friday nights.

OK.  Here is what happens to me.

If I have submitted a song that the KJ thinks is way out of touch with the crowd, and I haven't changed it already, then I get skipped.  If I get skipped, then I go put in a different song and ask for him to let me sing next.  Sometimes I'll bribe him with a drink.

What a cruel world.  It's every man/woman for his/her self out there :)

Now see, I would never do that.  I am at all times polite to people, no matter what they want to sing.  I think the two low points a couple of weeks ago were when this older lady sang Gene Autry's "Back in the Saddle Again."  It drove some hot young uns right out of the place.  However, if someone does a Sinatra song well, even younger people can appreciate it.  By the way, the same person later joined in a duet...the song?  "Those were the Days"  (All in the Family)...AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

............ I have NEVER heard that done, that would be funny.

 You probably know what is going on better than anybody in the place.  You ought to be running the show, for everyone's benefit.  Just try using your best judgement and let the chips fall where they may.  You might be surprised how well it works out for you.
 But like you said, always be polite and respectful about it.  At least until people get to know you.

Actually, these people know me quite well.  I guess I was bascially frustrated because this was a rare slow night , as far as people showing up, and people decided to roll out the slooooow stuff.  What really got me was that I had met some younger girls and invited them to the show, saying it was really a blast.  They walked out after they heard all these ballads in a row.  People may like to sing them, but most people don;t like to heqar them, especially that many in a row.
