As KJs' what's the most songs you've had to sing in one night?  One local KJ said on one bad night she had to sing about twent song in a row.  However, she did say that that seldom happens.

Even on a night when there are NO singers, I have never sang more than 4-5 times in a night. Most of the time I just sing the first song of the night and that is it.

If there are no singers, everyone else there would much rather hear dance music than hear me sing over and over again. I'm a good singer, but if the entire crowd are not singers themselves, why would they want to hear me over and over again? I would just sing a song maybe once every 30-45 minutes or so jus to remind them it was karaoke night!!

I pretty much do the same as Topher.

Usually if there are no singers, there is generally little to no people in the bar.  We don't get those nights often, but it has happened.  Sometimes I may take the dead zone to try a new song or two.

We try but believe it or not the non-singers want to hear us sing.  No accounting for taste. LOL

kinda the same. I've actually sang myself hoarse ...

I still just play videos or mp3s and then will jump in with a fun song.

One thing that I do that's a lot of fun is play DK's version of "Tequila"... and take the cordless mic around. Get a non-singer to blare out "TEQUILA" during the right part... usually gets the crowd laughing, and invariably I have some singer's slips handed in!

As much as I hate to do it, I will sing standards (stuff that others do all the time to death)... and that oftentimes will get someone up too!

On very slow nights where there is very few or no singers I'll sing often. Usually standards like Knight or sing alongs and sometimes I'll even venture some new stuff ..Just to let the crowd know how bad I can be  (LOL) - Usually later in the night people will get up.   The most I've ever sung while hosting a show is probably
8 songs ?

If its BUSY I might sing 1-2 times. And those will be dance tunes  that  I invite someone to come up and sing with me---Like BRICKHOUSE or SWEET HOME CHICAGO. So int that situation others get to sing too.
If its slow I'll just take a spot in the regular rotation. But NEVER more than any of the custies and NEVER EVER the FINAL SONG. I will open it  with me singing --but with an upbeat positive song like CELEBRATION or DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC.

I got an idea; if you have to sing up to 20 songs, why not just record those songs and then play them when you need to. While the songs are playing you may be stricking some converation with them customers.; and the songs may be the topic of converations.  ah just a stupid idea

I don't generally sing at my shows.  Once in a while if it's very slow and someone asks I might do one.  As described, if there are NO singers, I just play music.  Maybe that would be a good time to pop in a multiplex/PHP type of disc I suppose.

Ah, let's see...
On a slow night I've taken part in 3 man rotations and can sing close to 15 songs a night.
When I have a mediocre night of about 6 to 8 singers I'll throw myself in at the end of every rotation or rotation and a half.
Anymore than 8 singers, I'll sing the first song and then maybe only 1 or 2 more if I'm lucky.

My thawts about it.
1) If the bar is busy, but no singers then sing one every 15 minutes to half an hour or so.  A lot of people get encouraged to sing if they see someone else doing it, even if it is just the KJ.
2) If the bar is dead, like less than a dozen people, and I have 2 or 3 singers, I'll join them and we'll sing karaoke all night long.  Why not?  The bar is dead anyway.  If you show these 2 or 3 singers that you'll let them sing to their heart's content, then they become regulars.  Singers like to sing, a-lot.  Letting them do so everyonce and a while will keep them coming back and next time, they'll bring friends.
3) Lastly, I always sing uptempo songs.  Once you get their feet tapping, then the book-browsing begins.

My two nickels worth...

I had a slow night just this past weekend (due to a Halloween party somewhere else) I started with just 3 singers (including myself) so each time I sang, I picked a faster, more upbeat song, with dance music breaks every hour. My show lasts 4 hours, and in the last hour, myself, and my 2 other singers just started singing wacky songs together and inviting others in the audience to join us. We started with Summer Nights from Grease. We kept doing that with other songs, including Y.M.C.A. and Love Shack, And ended up with a crowd singing with us and having a blast! My Show ended up running 4 hours over, and I didn't notice. Now I know to try that sooner on a slow night.

The bar MGR had a birthday party for her daughter (16) and had teen agers While playing music before karaoke I showed one of the kids how to search the mp3 data base and put them in the background player. The kids had a ball so did the oldtimers. One of their karaoke requests was Dont Cha By (@$%&#!) Cat Dolls which I dont have yet but it was one they put in the background player when it started they jumped up and started singing with it knew all the words. Of course I let it play. The list they had was so good I saved it and next time I have a young crowd I'll just load it for bacground....

When it is real slow the system replaces the jukebox some people I will let select on the computer..   If the energy is fading I'll sing something to get it going I dont like singing to a small crowd...If there are dancers Id rather dance and visit if somebody wants to sing they get up after the current song...The host should read the crowd and do what they want This operation does not require a structured show it is times like this that parties and weddings are booked for you are mingling more with the regulars.......

LOL.....Musta been lots of alchohol and possibly some pot involved. If my show ran 4 hours over I would notice pretty damn quickly when the sun started coming up. Oh, and also when the bar manager called the police. How can you "accidently" run 4 hours over?

Now IMHO....... that's the cool way to handle a slow night. Let all of us "hanger on-ers"........us "die hard can't-leave-if-it's-karaoke-night-and-the-bar-is-still-open" type of people sing ourselves to death.

Where I go, it's not normally ever slow, but I have been there on a few slow nights, where I will get done with a song & the KJ will say "Here, do another one"..... and I'm like - - - - "Kewl".   :hi5:

(been gone a few days, trying to get my posts in, and this is the coolest thread happening that I see....... so back to your KJ discussion........ just throwing in the view of one of us "little guys"- the singers)
