finallly got my basement finished and my karaoke stuff moved in and it sounds great!
i'd like to work on doing some mixing but not sure if i need anymore equipment.
What i have now is a JVC 22 Karaoke CD+G Player,Yamaha EMX66M 6-Channel Powered Mixer,2 Yamaha BR15 speakers and a shure sm57 mic.
For software i have Adobe Audition 1.5.

I had seen similar things in Walmart ad, if you want to take a look.

Currently i use an  hp pavilion notebook for recording. My player plugs into the front of the mixer and my laptop is connected via the "mic in" on the computer from "rec out" also on the front of the mixer.(2 into 1 cable)
Currently when i record,it's already mixed, music and voice all into one track,so i don't seem to have alot of editing options and mixdowns.I like to sing along with the music. My computer isn't capable of playing on screen lyrics and the thought of having to play my cdg disc on the mixer and sing into the computer  doesn't seem to be a viable or appealing option.
I have no other options to connect my mixer that i can see.I tried doing the left and right channel thing without success.
any tips, suggestions or equipment advice would be greatly appreciated!  :worship:

thanks,mike

Most mixers have a pan dial you can use to move the music from left to right on the sound stage (where the sound 'appears' when you listen in stereo).  This mixer doesn't have this option so using the seperate left and right channels make things a little more difficult.  You can try recording the vocals and music sererately and then try to line them up but it's not a real easy thing to do.  To make it easier you could try doing it this way.

1. Record the song to the computer.
2. Start recording the song to the computer but turn the level down all the way on the music before you start singing.
3. Line up the two recordings.

The problem is you won't really have any music when you record this way.

Other than recording multiple times or getting another piece of equipment there isn't a real easy way to record seperate tracks of music/voice at the same time.

Using a small external mixer like the Soundcraft Compact 4 to pan left/right or a similar mixer that supports sepereate left/right inputs would solve your problem though.  As would using MP3+CDG for your recordings.

Go buy Apple GarageBand for $79.99. It gives you the ability to record up to 8 individual tracks. You would first record the output from the karaoke CD+G (which woud really be recorded as the output from your mixing amp), then go back and sing your vocal over the recorded track (maybe just print out a lyric sheet so you don't have to read off a TV screen...why would you record a song you don't know anyway??). You could then edit each track individually and add effects to your voice and mix the music independently of each other. You could even add additional stuff like horns, a big backing drum beat, bass thump, etc. and be the next Puff Daddy on your block with the R&B remix of "All My Exes Live in Texas."

That's what I'd do....

well thanks for the help, looks like i'm going to be pretty limited on what i want to do.

i don't use an apple computer,so GB doesn't really apply.i can multitrack with my cep.

the soundcraft mixer looks like it would work, just not sure how it would work in conjuction with my current mixer.i just bought the yamaha so buying another mixer is kind of depressing...  :(

maybe i'm overthinking it,doesn't seem like it should be this hard.i spent quite abit for the system and even more for the software and i still can't do what i want to do easily. :grumble:

I know how you feel.  I bought a SoundCraft Compact 10 for recording at home and live shows.  Works great for home recording but not so great for live shows.  I went from a $250 mixer to a $750 mixer tomget both. (ouch).  You can always record one, and then the other to get the results you're looking for but multitracking the two at the same time can't be done through the mixer you currently have because of the limitations of the hardware.

If you opt to use both mixers you'd use one and take the record outputs to your computer and the main or monitor outputs to the existing mixer - putting it in as basically an amplifier only.

You do not need a mixer to record; they are for mixing, and you can mix you song within AA. The mixer should be use as pre amp.

Just load the track you want to sing in track 1 of AA
Armed track 2 for your vocal recording and mute track1 while recording your vox
Since you can't sing without the lyric; you need to play your backing track on winamp with the lyric plugin. Sing to the backing and record just the vox in track 2

Then sync the vox track with the backing track by rightclicking and dragging the vox or the backing track.(I think thats how its done in AA) Its that simple.

And by the way if you use the mixer pre amp for your mic then the mixer imput should be connected to the line in of your pc and not the mic in.

Good luck
