This is what give karaoke a bad name!
Wow I DID have respect for you but this thread just threw all of that out the window! But then again, you don't give a crap about other people!
I'm not in the business. I sang last night and I'm not even sure I can sing. It had been a while. The KJ had gone to great lengths to stage a Jimmy Buffet night and hardly anybody showed up. I felt sorry for her, so I guess I do care about people and their problems. I just don't care what people think about me.
I'll digress into a little wisdom that comes from being older. Not any smarter. Just more wise to B.S. Too many people in this world use their B.S. to influence others to act and think the way they want them to think. I have two defenses. Either play the game with them. Or be "obnoxious." Maybe laugh at them, maybe be rude to them, or simply tell them to go away. I like being obnoxious :) Sorry if it makes you angry. You should work on that :)

In a place where many good singers go, I'm sure I have the wrong attitude. People there perhaps aren't using Karaoke as just another excuse to get drunk and have a good time.
But if the object IS to drink and have a good time, then everyone needs to admit to it and lighten up. One person being a jerk spoils it for many people. Is the attitude you are talking about filler music and dance sets or belittling poor singers? And speaking of lightening up, how on earth is teasing a singer who doesn't sing well considered lightening up? To me the only jerk in that situation is the person belittling someone else.... Susie
I would be happy if all singers could just have the common courtesy to applaud for other singers. Until singers show that courtesy to others, I think they themselves deserve to be treated with no extra courtesy other than what they get solely from their talent. Which usually never measures up to what is in their own minds.
Most all singers where I go do show that common courtesy. Maybe it is because those with over-inflated egos are discouraged.

I don't have to work on anything, I am in "the business". I wouldn't be for long if I had your kj's idiot mentality! Karaoke is going to attract some singers that couldn't hold a tune in a bucket, but they get the same respect - if not more sometimes for actually HAVING the courage to get up - as the singer that sounds like they could go pro any minute. It isn't about teasing & put downs & any kj that promotes that IS an idiot & should be out on their (@$%!)! It brings down karaoke in general & does leave impressions to others whether it be good or bad. Some people just LOVE to be rude & that mentality just encourages it. That is wrong! If you THINK it's ok, then maybe Quote: you should work on that

I have sang karaoke in virtually each corner of our United States.
Late 80's California Military
Karaoke enthusiasts were extremely cordial and appreciate of each other's music.
Mid 90's Texas Brief Tenure
Karaoke enthusiasts were given the same hospitality southerners genuinely possess
Y2K Massachusetts
Karaoke enthusiasts regardless of the fact I now live in the Business First mentality here in the North, enthusiasts are extremely cordial and appreciative of music
If I ever walked into a place stating that karaoke was being performed and heard anything OTHER than appreciation for persons singing, I would essentially walk out and never frequent that establishment.
In my opinion, yes, there are bad KJ's. I also believe these KJ's don't last in the business for too long.
Just my piece.

To me theres NOTHING MORE BORING than sitting listening to DEAD SILENCE for 2-3 minutes or more waiting for the next singer to meander up and get qued up. So lets figure this out---filler song=maybe 2 min each x say, 40 singers per night=80 mins of DEAD AIR SILENCE. Ill take the 80 mins of filler/dance music anytime for the energy and spontaneos dancing that it generates. EVERY TIME. If I wanted an hour and a half of silence I'll go to a monestary or mausoleum or library! I guess I have my singers well trained. I run 2 players and turnaround between songs is 15 seconds or so. My singers get their butt to the stage when they're called. Sometimes I have to restart the song, but 90% of the time they make it to the stage in time to start singing.
I get lots of compliments on the fact that I keep the show hoppin'. Everyone gets more turns to sing if you keep the rotation moving swiftly.
O/TI like all the smilies...they're new since my last visit here.

dave-sinatra,
I hope you aren't as lonely and angry as you sound. I'm sure there are any number of us that can show you a good show where singers and non-singers alike show each other respect.
You might want to remember that what goes around, comes around.

IF there are enough singers to support ONLY karaoke being played then the rotations are usually TOOO long for most singers and eventually they complain or look for a place with less singers. I like it that way. Schizos and pushy people can take a hike. There is/can be a difference between people who think they can sing and Schizos and pushy people. I don't think teasing and put downs from a KJ is appropriate. If I were a patron at a show where the KJ belittled people I would leave, even I weren't the one being belittled; even if I didn't know the person being belittled. I don't think there is anything wrong with someone believing they have a talent, even when I believe they don't. Who knows, even though I believe I can sing some songs passably well, it may grate on others... Does that give them the right to tease me and put me down? Karaoke, for me, is all about having a good time and enjoying the company of like minded individuals. I would never tell someone they can't sing, first of all that's just WRONG and secondly that's only MY opinion and some opinions are better left to yourself. To each his own, Susie :? I don't think a singer should ever be belittled. Every singer deserves applause even if you're just glad that they're done!!
I encourage people to not take themselves too seriously because if you're having fun, everyone is going to have fun...but for those who take it very seriously, it's wrong to blatantly make fun of them. If I have a singer who is being heckled, I have been known to call the heckler to the stage to sing the same song. They never want to take the stage and it shuts them up!
(I may not show up here often but I certainly offer my opinion when I do show up)

I am extremely lonely. Someone in this forum nicknamed me "Lonely Heart." My anger comes from frustrated love. I need a deep, satisfying, rewarding, sickly dependent, borderline insane relationship. One of those where if I lose it I'll jump off a bridge.

Gotta love Elvis impersonators...the more they think they are really him, the better they are :)
I'm into finding the best recordings and letting the music do the work for me. I'm just too lazy to put much effort into it lately. Sunday I sang Van Halen's You Really Got Me, courtesy of Sunfly, and R.E.M's stand, courtesy of Sound Choice. Boy they rocked. Since they were both eighties songs, I got teased that I needed to be wearing spandex.

I put on a show. I add sound effects, sound bites, don the hats, use props...when I don't do these things, people ask why. I have a large and extremely loyal following. That said, I sing when it is my turn in the rotation, which is one reason I got into this. That said, I make everyone feel special and compliment them over the mic (finding something good to say, even if it's hard). It's got to be fun to me too, or else I would just DJ weddings, because it certainly doesn't pay much...weddings do.
