I wanted to use the word Sh.th..e or H..lh...e, but that would be impolite. But here's the story--I was out delivering Karoake Magazines last night and stopped in to drop off some in this little nasty bar I came across. It was dingy, grimy, dirty, worn-out. The Karaoke room was about the size of my living room. The KJ didnt bother to say hello and just took the magazines and stuck them behind a chair. This was the kind of place youd think twice about sitting down in a booth from the fear of something CRAWLING OUT AND GNAWING ON YOUR LEG!! It was naaaaaaaaaaaaasty!!! Sooooooooo.....................The question here is WOULD YOU EVER TAKE A GIG IN  A PLACE LIKE THAT?????

For me ABSOLUTELY NOT. WOULD PASS IT BY WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT.

How about you? Would u subject yourself to such a workplace??

Would never go in a place like that.  I would sooner quit working if those were my only options.  Those kind of places are perfect for the "work for beer" - $50 a night kj's.  Keep the lowballers in the low bars & out of the mainstream.

Sure if they pay our price.  But then again the chances of that are very slim.

I'd work a place like that under a few conditions.

1. My equipment and I would have to be safe.  Getting mugged in the parking lot is unacceptable.
2. I'd have to be paid quite well to do it.  No, my normal fee is higher than what the other bar owner told you!
3. The customers would have to make it worthwhile.  If there is almost no one coming in then I'm not going to hand around either.

But other than that, sure I'd play a dive bar.  I might get noticed and book a decent place!

My new rule.

I do not hang out or work in bars that I would not drink out of the glassware as I no longer drink beer.

Most bars in Pittburgh are dives, unless it is a club or restruant.
They all are small, most are clean, but still dives and rough crowds.

As far as bikers, bikers keep the trash out around here.

Small does not equate directly with nasty. Ive found many small places that were very pleasant even if they were older and in need of a remodel--so long as they are CLEAN. Bikers can be some of the most cool people out there too. Im talking about places that the COUNTY HEALTH INSPECTOR should have CLOSED LONG AGO and that the CITY SHOULD HAVE CONDEMNED!

I used to get up and sing in one of the places that you just described.  I honestly believe a prist could have walked in the door and if he didn't get in a fight within thirty minutes it would have only been because the good Lord was watching over him. The place had a five pice band which played seven nights a week.  While outsiders were probably terrified of the place, the locals were extremely loyal to each other.  Most of the problems began when strangers would come in and start pushing their weight around and acting like they owned the place.  Not a good idea when the locals in the bar consider each other family.  And anyone stupid enough to be disrespectful to one of the women was considered suicidal. I really never witnessed them being disrespectful to anyone that showed them respect, that is unless you're kissing the guy's wife.  Redneck Bar -  I'm not a KJ but it's like someone else said - if the money was right.   One other thing, the band's tip jar was always full - I don't see that in a lot of the places I go to today.
