At the bar I go to, they won't let two people do the same song in one night. I think that works out pretty well, so people don't get to show up someone else like in the situation you are talking about a10    timbo

I wish they would do that around here but most places don't.

I don't allow 2 songs in a night either.  Main reason is - when I was just a singer (before hosting), I couldn't stand to HEAR a song more than once a night.  I enjoy listening to karaoke mainly for the variety.  If I want to hear a song over again, I will buy the cd.
Secondary reason is sometimes I get that person who claims it is "their" song & wants to do it again to "show how it's supposed to be done"!  OK.....tomorrow night, get here & put it in first & show me then!

I like to sing "Cruz" by Christina Aquilera

It's my warm-up song, I get frustrated not because other people do my songs but, that I'm too lazy to get them done myself.... :asleep: I think that~

I know enough songs, that I really don't need to do a specific song to make my night.  There are songs that get requested for me to do, because so and so likes how I do it, but me CLAIMING a song? no.

There are too many wonderful songs.  I've had people tell me "What's Up" was MY song cuz I ad lib a bit... no it isn't.. it belongs to 4NonBlondes and whomever wrote it.. I jsut sing it, after all....LOL

When I first started doing karaoke back in Ohio, Material Girl was my song (Lord help the woman who tried to sing it before I turned it in).  Now by some fluke my song is Toxic by Britney Spears.  I sang it on the KJ's whim and now it's my song.  For a while, she wouldn't even put it in the book so no one else would pick it out.  Now we have someone new filling in and if he remembers he puts it in, but I don't really care one way or another.

i'm not a kj, but several of the people i sing for and with have tried to make certain songs one the type this thread is alluding to, and it's been my experience that if you enjoy a well-rounded group of people attending the shows, that when songs are labelled as 'your song', it may be time to completely throw something new at the audience, if you can, by switching genre's or even better yet, working on your upper or lower register, whichever one you sing the least amount of time.

If you are someone that the crowds enjoy it puts quite a spinner on the evening when they don't expect it, lol.

:o) Just my two cents

I don't have "my song" either.  I'm known in the places I go for whipping out obscure, not-heard-that-often stuff.  I do that mainly because it seems that some people really get attached to singing the same things over and over again, weekend after weekend and I find that a little boring.  Especially when the crowd is the same people every time.  When you hear a person's name called out and see them walking to the stage and you KNOW before they even start singing what song you're going to hear, I think it's time to mix things up a bit.  No one EVER knows what I am going to sing until they see the splash screen on the monitors... that is unless someone asks me before I get up there and I fill them in.

I do get asked to sing certain songs that either no one else ever does or ones that I've done in the past that people enjoy hearing.  Sometimes I will sing them, sometimes I will go with what I've already decided to sing that evening.  Just depends.

the only thing that bothers me about when people make requests from you is what if you have worked your tail off working on 3 or 4 new numbers that you are dying to try.  You sing those instead of what was requested, and then your so-called FRIENDS, get all offended, lol

oh well, it's still the best hobby in the world.
