I live in an apartment complex.  If the ladies want to put on a show, well....

I'm hopeless.  Thought I knew everything when I was in my thirties.  I had to get to 45 to realize I'm really stupid.

Dave, I'm sure you wouldn't want "your woman" standing in front of that window.
Why do you call yourself a "stalker"?  You've got my curiosity up!   :dontknow:

I don't want a woman that's my woman cause that means I'm her man and I don't want to be anyone's property.  Enough of that crap already.  All you people saying "be yourself" ought to truly understand what it means before you say it.

I really am very sorry Tennesee Girl.  I'm just a bachelor without a clue about women, really.  I'm P.O.'ed a lot and difficult to be around sometimes.

I think I am sometimes thought of as a stalker because I don't say hello to women all the time.  A thousand feelings go through my head when I see a lady.  I'm still P.O'ed over my ex taking me to divorce court.  All the nasty, cruel things she said.  I'm ashamed of how I've treated women since then.  And I really am shy around women to begin with.  I'm hopeless.  Thank God for bikinis and binoculars :)

It's okay.....I went through a rough divorce, too and was on a anti-man thing for awhile.  At one point though, I knew I had to stop blaming every man for what one put me through or I was going to lose my sanity and end up very lonely.   And I don't think you are hopeless.  Apology accepted.   :handshake:

Thanks.

I'm not anti-woman though.  I just think I used to be really stupid.  I didn't realize how nasty a woman could be.  Now that I know, I'm a lot more cautious than I used to be.

I sing a LOT, and have done so for a long time.  I never actually went out and TRIED to get my own style, it just happened.

Sometimes, however, I hear a song that I do, and find I do it so differently it amazes me.  This is because I've sung the song so long, that my personality just bled into it, I think.

I haven't tried mimicry in years, however.  I'm never going to sound like Dolly Parton or whoever's song I sing.   I try to retain their style when I start, but somewhere along the line, I lose it, I'm guessing.

As long as people like it, and they still can tell what song I'm doing, I guess it isn't a big deal. LOL

Yes I have to agree, and it's not just Karaoke, it's also bar bands.  I've watched people tell my cousin she sounds EXACTLY like Tammy Wynette, or Patty Loveless, or whomever, because they like the way she did the song.

She does the songs in her own voice and style.  The folks just think that if they like how she did it, AND how tammy wynette did it, by gosh, she MUST sound like Tammy!

I've been compared to Joan Baez, who I sound nothing like, Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, Janis Joplin, And just about every other singer I do songs of. LOL  I don't sound like any of em in my opinion.

I sing because I love to sing.  When people LIKE it, that's a big bonus!

I do sound like a pretty good singer.  I think I'm losing something when you are telling me about it.

The thing is..  Even our own PERSONAL styles are not completely US.  They are usually a compilation of things we have picked up throughout our lives.. A combination of singers and styles that you have listened to and perhaps mimicked throughout the years.  The trick is to listen and develop from a good VARIETY of singers/styles.. That way you can develop bits and pieces of what you like into your own style.  And as you get more confident of your own abilities, you will find that you STOP mimicking.   I think the problem comes into play, when someone has mimicked ONE singer and that's it.  How else could you sound but like that person??  That's the one and only style you would have learned and therefore you will always sound like you are mimicking them.   If that is the case, you would do yourself a world of good to start listening to some other types of music and opening yourself up to new techniques, sounds, inflections, harmonic and melodic freedoms... and then slowly those things will creep into YOUR style and you will start manipulating these things and making them your own.  One easy way to force yourself to try doing your own thing, is to do a genderbender song..  Like I kinda did with the Beatles song Yesterday.  I was lucky enough to come across a backing which sounded NOTHING like the original, but which I had never heard before AND it is originally a guy's song, so that helped force me to be more original and do my own thing.. BUT you have to have developed your own style for that to be able to work, otherwise you may get frustrated with the song and feel lost..  So work on branching out and finding new sounds :)

Having just got over a summer cold, I'll restate a previous post:

Actually what I think I need is a repetoire of songs that are grouped to coincide with the current condition of my sinuses or other respiratory condition.  Like:

Stuffed up nose:  John Denver

Bronchitus:  Bruce Springsteen

Out of breath, unable to hold a note:  Frank Sinatra

Had too many:  Jim Morrison

Sober and clear voice:  ?????  (I dunno, never happens)

Ha Ha

OK, like everyone else is saying, just be yourself, if you want a good song to practice without mimicking, try what a wonderful world, louis style was so distinct that it would probably take more practice not to sing like him, lol  good luck and have fun

Have you considered playing a game of F U karaoke? When you go out with your friends, pick songs for each other instead of your own, you definately get different song choices for the night. Word of warning though, know your friends well, or you are liable to have to sing something like barbie girl or I feel like a woman. lol  have fun and good luck

That does sound like fun, timbo.  I tried that once before when I was first trying to to Karaoke.  Some women picked out a song for me and lied to me about what is was.  When I got to sing I found out it was "Gimme Some Loving".  I butchered it. But it they were all laughing :)
