All too often I see reference to original singers of songs in intros and comments, like "I can't sing that high as such and such", or "cant sing that good as...", etc. but you've got to know that most singers don't really sound like what you hear after all the "electronic warfare" has occurred before the record is cut. Most of us, if not all of use, sing with little if any "effects, crutches, pitch correction, etc" and that's what makes this site so good. To me this site represents "real, grass-roots" singing. You are all great singers!!!!!

On the one hand, I agee that professional singers on recording have all sorts of things done to their voices to make them sound great, and most of us don't have access to even passable recording studios.

On the other hand, the singers don't just appear in the studio....someone has heard them sing and decided they were good enough to record.  How many of us would have this happen to us? I don't really know....there are so many factors involved such as not only the singing voice but your attitude, luck, how you look, your style, training, and so much more.  So much of it is subjective.

I think many karaoke singers have great voices but they don't always know how to use them.  They often lack the right kind of energy or can really put emotion into it (and I include myself in that, although I work hard at getting it right).

But, we are all here to have fun, right? So it doesn't matter how 'good" we are, only that we enjoy it and that others enjoy hearing it.

 :oh yeah:

Not necessarily.. someone saw a person that could make them $$$.. doesn't matter if they can sing or not with all the techno and other fx they add to a lot of today's "singers" you just basically need to be able to speak.. OH.. and you have to have "THE LOOK". I think it also helps if you're willing to stop thinking for yourself and hand your mind, body, and soul over to the record companies cuz you know "they know best".

I mean look at AI for example.. there are very talented people that never hit the stage there because there are others who are so bad that we MUST get them on TV for a laugh. And then we'll actually let them record a CD of not good singing (Mr. Hung) and we'll get them on Leno, Letterman, halftime entertainment of the Lakers, etc...

it doesn't take singing anymore in order to become a "singer"... when have we ever really heard Britney Spear's voice? it's all disguised through her soundman and FX, etc..

Anyways..  I agree with Russ... I've heard much more talent on these sites than on the radio.. Radio doesn't know what they are missing...

I've heard some karaoke singers (on this site and off) that outshine many of the pop performers. The truth is "the industry" is a business and they put up what sells, if that means making a Milli Vanilli then so be it in their eyes. There is so much outside of talent that goes into "making it." I have friends that are unbelievably talented - writers, singer, musicians and all they do is record their albums in their home studios and play local places - maybe some Europe, but the "big time" has passed them by. Who you know is so critical.

Personally I love being entertained by real people that are sitting right in front of you and you can talk to them - know them than the "stars" who are unreachable. I guess that's why I like AI - sort of like rooting for your buddies you sang around town with.

Overall I agree - the talent pool is huge - the sad thing is the most talented doesn't always get their chance to shine.

I find the latest rash of female country singers disheartening..not that they dont sound good..its just they are packaged as anything but country girls...they are all citied up...model perfect and half nekkid!   The saddest part is..they all look so much alike...I cant remember who is who unless I read the credits under the videos!

I miss the day of uniqueness...the likes of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, Reba!!!, and its not just country..pop has really taken a commercial turn...who is who up there anyway...once upon a time you had noooo problem knowin who Michael Bolton was..now everyone sounds the same..not that they sound bad..just..the same..

I love this site cuz I hear real people...real talent..I love to hear someone join who has a uniqueness..and I enjoy hearin those who can sing like whoever they want to..I simply just enjoy hangin with you people!!!

New Day – I completely agree with you. Most of the female country singers are forgettable – you might remember a good song, but sorting out who’s voice is who’s is a challenge – PLUS with the Barbie-blah looks they have it’s easy to forget them. I enjoy those voices that have something different about them – something that sets them apart. I think that’s why many of the more experienced female singers have been getting more airplay. (Faith Hill, Martina, Trisha’s back, Reba, etc…) and of course someone like Gretchen Wilson who does define herself and isn’t form-fitted by managers, and labels. And don’t get me started on the sex-laden videos – I remember when country was quite a bit more tame – or at least much more subtle.

The one thing I’ve noticed in the industry in general is that a lot of crap gets thrown at the wall, and some of it sticks. What sticks isn’t always the best, but it grabbed the attention of some group (for whatever limited amount of time their attention span would allow).

H Kass,

Good to see so many familiar faces still here. I'm off work for a while and  I've been lurking about for a couple of days I knew it would be just a matter of time before I had an opinion I just had to express.  I have a theory about why all the new artists in most genres are all alike.  I think there are a couple of reasons actually.  One thing is that the people who produce music are afraid to put money into someting they are unsure of. They are all unwilling to take any chances. Why do that if you can just find someone who you can package to fit the formula that already works and make millions.  Very few people with the power are interested in music for the purpose of art or expression. It has become simply a method for making money.  The same thing has happend in the film industry.  (how many times can you remake the same movie?) The other problem may be that the consumer market has shifted. People who produce music and movies are consumer driven.  Right now the music and movie markets are in the hands of teenagers.  Face it they are the ones who drive most our industies today.  They have the time to listen to endless music and the money to buy tons of CD's. Most teenagers aren't interested in originality or expressionism they just follow the current trend.  Now before I get hate mail from all the youngsters on this site.......I am not speaking for all teenagers i am perfectly aware that some of you don't fit the mold and I applaud you for it.

See you around  :D

I wondered what Audiotune was, too, so I looked it up on Google.
http://www.neuratron.com/audiotune.htm
It is some recording software and it helps you stay in tune? Sounds interesting...

And, I don't think AI is anything like the "real" recording industry and how it normally works.
