PART I
I have been KJing in my area for more than 6 years now and went out on my own about 1 1/2 years ago. I currently run three shows a week (Sat, Sun, and Thurs). There is a guy who had been coming to my shows while I was working for someone else than when I went out on my own he never once came in until recently to solicit people to come to his new show on Friday night a gig I could have got if I was more aggressive. The fact that he got the gig doesnt bother me its how he all of a sudden shows up acting like hes there to support my show while at the same time he is calling and going up to all my customers trying to pull them to his place. Granted it is on a night I'm not running a show but at this point I dont think that would matter. He has made comments that he is going to put certaining people out of business one of which is a well respected KJ that runs an ethical business. Have any of you had a situation like this in your travels and if so how did you deal with it? I feel like approaching him and asking him not to come to my shows just to drum up business. Am I over reacting or is this person over steping his bounderies?

PART II
Well, Things have really changed in the past two weeks. This KJ I mentioned was fired for telling the Manager he should be paid more because he could get more money at any other venue if he wanted. So the manager told him to go ahead and see you later. I know a couple of people who work there and right before he got fired apparently he thought I was trying to take he's gig from him but what was happening someone that work there mentioned my name to the manager so he thought I had something to do with it. That would be the last thing on my mind! This was this KJ's first gig and because he was into himself and wasn't professional in handling his business he got fired. Now they are calling me asking if I would consider taking over, but I feel like it's an Awkward situation seeing that he was telling people I was trying to get the gig and then all of a sudden he is fired and there asking me. Not sure what I should do; avoid the gig all together even though I had nothing to do with it or take the job and ignore him. The manager ensures me he will let anyone who is concerned that I had nothing to do with there decsion. What would you do? Thanks, Bob

I'm not a KJ (and I don't play one on TV either)
But as a business man I have situations like this often.
Whether it is with my Real Estate business or Web Hosting/Design.
Business is business. I say take the Gig more money in your pocket. If others don't like it well too bad.
If you had nothingto do with this persons demise. You have nothing to fret!
That's just my humble opinion...

Take it. You didn't cause him to get fired and they are calling you.

I agree but the weird thing about this he knows a lot of people that come to my shows, basically because he used to be one of them, and he was telling people that I was trying to take the gig from him and it was no more than two days later I hear he had been fired. I have such a good reputation that I would hate to have people think that I had something to do with when I didn't. I did talk to a couple of people that come to my show and know him as well and they say that even though they know I didn't do anything it might look like it to others. So you would still go foward and hope it doesn't backlash on you. Thanks, Bob

If you can handle another night, go for it. The people who come to your shows and know you, probably know as much about what happened as you do. If they don't have a problem with it, you shouldn't.

Take the gig and dont worry about it. Within a month the entire episode will be forgotten. The custies will keep coming out. When it gets right down to it there really is NO SUCH THING as customer loyalty. They will continue coming to the bar as they always have. Chances are that he wasnt being professional in all the other areas of the show also and that manaagment was beginning to tire of his nonsense anyway. Have no guilt about this guy---after all he was trying to steal YOUR CUSTIES! He would have NO GUILT ABOUT TAKING YOUR GIG! So take the gig and make it your own and throw his nappy butt under the bus--if he was STUPID enough to try to pull that on the owner then he got what he deserved! I would expect that the custies and waitresses at the place will start coming up to you and tell you how much of a jerk this guy was and how HAPPY they are that YOU ARE THERE NOW!

Take the gig. Competition is the American way. If customers ask, tell them that if you had the power to get people fired from gigs, you'd be the only show in town. If this jerkoff confronts you about it, tell him that if he had half a brain in his head and could run a decent show he'd still be working there.

your conscience is clear... you didn't have anything to do with him losing the gig.
Take it. But be smart when you do... go in like any other gig... go though your checks and balances... just because someone wants you doesn't mean it is WORTH going to... it could have a few warning signs that would make it a "passer"

I'd take the gig.
What about the customers and the appearance that you caused him to loose his gig?
Don't sweat it. If asked just say that you didn't know he was fired and they approached you. You had nothing to do with his loosing the gig. Say you're sorry he wasn't able to keep the show but sometimes there are conflicts between the venue and the contractor for the job. It happens all the time.
If you run a professional show and run your business professionally then people will know that you didn't have anything to do with it. You'll hear stuff like, "That really doesn't sound like something he'd do". I hear that and smile because they know I am above board 100% and try to be very professional in all my dealings with other businesses and with the public. It pays to be professional when things like this happen.

I say, take the gig if the Management is asking for you. You have nothing to feel guilty about. As for this other KJ, just ignore his accusations. If people are really bothered by how you came about this gig, they either will approach you and say something like, "You know, I think it sucks what you did to..." or they just won't come to your show.
Those that approach you about it, you can simply tell them that the Management approached you because they weren't happy with the other KJ, not the other way around. Just leave it at that. No further explanations should be necessary. Don't say anything about the other KJ or his antics. Let him bury himself in his own delusions of grandeur. One thing that is a big turnoff to patrons, is when KJs bad-mouth each other. Most do not like to be put in the middle of personal issues between KJs. It's a turn-off to them, and then they will just avoid both KJs.

You just gave yourself the answer. He's unprofessional, you can give a better service. Why justify anything?
