[Hmmm... does this qualify as a regular discussion item or a technical question??? oh well...here it goes.]

Being that I'm a relative amateur, I still get new things happening to me when I play a gig. At this last gig, I had a lady requesting "Pistas"... meaning backtracks in Spanish... Interestingly enough she had never seen Karaoke before.

While I was playing dance music for a Salsa-crazed bunch... she wanted to preview a song to see if it was in her "tone". At the moment I couldn't think of any way of doing that, but since I've wonder if maybe I could get a pair of closed headphones that I can connect to my laptop and if someone wants to preview a song, I can do it that way. I will appreciate your feedback, ideas or comments...

Thanks,

If you have 2 soundcards and run a program like PCDJ you can simply load it to a player and cue it. Meaning listen to one track on another channel of you mixer while the other is still playing.

I believe you can even do this by running 2 copies of wimamp and configuring one for each output on the soundcard or using 2 seperate sound cards.

You would run each output to a different channel on your mixer and most mixers if not all have a cue or preview.

if this happens quite a lot, take in a $99 singing machine with a monitor, and hook up a set of headphones.

if it doesn't, tell them "sorry!"

This brings up a question I have.  What is the cheapest Karokee machine or computerized device I can buy that will let me adjust the key a song is played in?

TIA

The only one I can think of is a VocoPro DKP-10G CD+G / Video CD Player from Pssl.com $99

There is a plug in for win amp but it does not work very well.

Actually there are quite a few machines out there that will do it, Electrohome, RCA, Citizen, etc all for under $100CDN.

Thanks.  Do you happen to know anything about the quality of the units?

There is one way using your laptop to "queue" up your song. Check out this card from Echo:  Indigo DJ. This card had two separate audio channels you can assign to a different streams so you can play one song while listening to another song on a headphone. This is meant more for DJs to queue up the songs but this seems like exactly what you are looking for.

As for the quality of the sound, the specs look very good but I read mixed review on boards but mostly it's positive.

Thanks... I have an Indigo DJ installed... where I use one output for Hoster (Karaoke) and another output for Winamp (backgound music). If I'm playing Karaoke... I don't think that I can have someone preview a song... Altough if I'm just playing plain music, I could have them preview Karaoke by plugging headphones into the card...

We use the the Electrohomes as a back up in Laurie's show (main player when I sub) or to play other than CDGs.  No p[roblems with it after going four hours straight.  Nice unit, good key changers, produces a great graphic.  Only problem and it's not a big one, takes about 7-10 secs to load but by the time a new singer gets up it's usualy ready to go.

just cue the song in winamp, instead of a background song.
