Anyone else? We have a local bar the has Live Band Karaoke.
It's pretty cool, the band isn't fantastic, but they know how to make themselves sound good, well they have a good sound guy. They only know about 300 songs all rock but they go all night long and people seem to have a ton of fun. I had the heart to ask the guy what thay make, he said they split $300 after the sound guy. Another underpaid act.
I thought about putting a band of all musicians together that all can sight read music and figuring a way to put sheet music on screens from a computer. I started crunching the numbers and couldn't afford to get it off the ground, and 5 good musicians would cost me like $1500 a night if not much more.
It would be really cool to go to a live band karaoke that could play like 5000 different songs and all styles at that.

This is very common around here. Most of the bands that get hired to play will need to know more songs than those they normaly play.

I did live band karaoke a couple of years ago in Vegas. It was really fun.
I believe they had 4 band members. I don't know how many songs they knew, but the list was pretty short. However, they were very good about "winging it" if you asked for a song that wasn't on their list.
They had it at the Palms but don't do it there any more. I hear they have it at Mandalay Bay now.
Besides the band, they had a guy with a computer connected to the net and he would find the lyrics and put them up on a screen, and then they scrolled a bit. There was also a women MC who introduced everyone and called the names, took the slips, etc.
Good luck!

I've done it before and it's pretty damn cool. There's nothing like the vibe you get from a live band. Now if you're a stickler for the song being exactly like the original artist, you'll most likely be disappointed. But if you're looking for an organic feel and sound - the live bands are the best. PLUS - if you're a perfomer, the band really gets into it, and so does the audience.

Yes, I have a buddy here in Champaign, IL that has a Live Karaoke band called the "Cheezy Trio", , always a blast. They have a website but I don't know if I can put it up here, but they have a pretty big song list covering a wide range of genres, and there all extremely good musicians, if anyone is ever in Champaign make sure you check them out.

Over here the batter band normaly being along a set of song books where you can choose the song you want to sing. They have the lyrics to those song too, and you put it up on the sheet stand. You just have to tell the band what key you sing in.
They are very good with their music as long as you sing those songs in the book.

I was going to mention Cheezy Trio but Chamjam beat me to it. Unfortunately I haven't been able to catch them yet but Chamjam is right, they have a good reputation around here.

I will have to remember that next time I'm in Chicago...we go about once every other year ,so it will probably be 2006.
Anyone know of any good ones in New York City? We will be out there in a couple of weeks.

I would love to do that but haven't heard of it around here.
Come to think of it I didn't hear about it when we were in Vegas a few years ago either...
We/I go to Chicago periodically as we have family there, we'll have to check it out next time!

We have a place in Calgary that does something called Jammioke. Live band with song sheets. The lead giutarist tells me he feels like he has a coin slot in his belly and buttons on his back - you know - insert a loonie (a Cdn dollar coin) and push A23 for CCR "Bad Moon Rising" :headscratch:
I have got up at some blues joints and sang a couple of songs with the band. My favourite was on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. I got to sing some Chicago Blues with some really talents guys. The black base player asked me how I could be so cool  coming from Canada. I told him "We aren't just cool in Canada, we're Frosty! " Had a really good time.
