Okay a month ago I wanted to sing "My Maria" and my KJ says the disk has been ruined.  So I said okay and sang something else.  A couple weeks ago he asked why I wasn't doing "My Maria" anymore and I said because it was ruined.  He said it was okay now.  So last night I request "My Maria" and he says it's ruined.  He showed me the disk and it was all gummed up and cracked.  I wanted to fly the disk like a frisbee and he told me he already broke it in half.  I had stayed an extra 40 minutes past my normal check out time to sing My Maria.  Dang him.

Buy the disk yourself.  $23 for some peace of mind seems a relatively small price to pay.

Yes, there are some dumb KJ's out there.

There are some god ones too!

Find a new place to sing, see what else is out there.

I ALWAYS carry my discs around. They are always in the car and every few weeks I changed them so I may sing different songs. Hardly sing from the house disc.
In one place were am a regular they have a place to keep my discs

I don't play people's disc. I refuse to carry a cd+g player. I have enough equipment to carry, and that could possibly break.

Hmmm your show must be successful enough to afford to turn those away that bring their own discs. I ALWAYS bring my own discs because the KJ's dont keep on hand the songs that I sing. They're too obscure. And yes that includes the ones that do it on the laptops. Even with thier "36,000" song selections. So when I encounter that I gotta leave. If you dont have it on your laptop and you don't keep a backup G player--well Ill be moving on. Now that may not mean much in terms of $$ spent for that particular evening for the bar, maybe 2-3 mixed drinks=say $15.00. But I tend to keep going back to places I try, at least 1-2 times a month. So...............Let's see 2 visits per month X 12 months=24 visit per year X $15.00 per visit=$360 per year lost revenue to the bar. Now multiply that by however many more people get turned away and I would say that the bar has a lost revenue problem happening right under thier noses. Now I'd be willing to bet that the OWNER is not someone who likes to lose REVENUE. Particularly if it's due to his DJ not being WILLING to ACCOMODATE the customers. Talk to KNIGHTSHOW about this--he's got the best solution. Spare CDG player, happy visitors with thier own discs, owner making revenue from them. I run into this situation more and more as I go around doing magazine revue storys(see Knightshows post and thread). Exclusive laptop karaoke has it strengths, but it also has its weaknesses. It is CONVEINET for the DJ. But it doesnt really serve ALL the customers. Result those leave and wont come back=LOST $$ for the bar owner. As I encounter this I simply dont go back to those shows. Me plus how many others over the course of the year??????

I dunno Kurt--sounds kinda ticky-tack to me.  Are you telling me that in 36,000 songs you can't find SOMETHING to sing?  What's wrong with expanding your horizons a bit and *gasp* singing something new?

Just for the record, I do play CDG's for customers if they are brought in, I just think it's awfully silly to leave a show just because they wouldn't.

Always play customer discs.  Even when I make the final move to computer, a d isc player will always be in my rack - not just for customer discs, but for simply back up purpose if the computer ever failed.  Silly not to go that extra step for the ones supporting YOU!  Nobody can have everything,  nor should they try.  Like Kurt said, he sings "obscure" songs that MOST kj's don't carry - so I would say he is "expanding his horizons" as he doesn't sing songs that everybody else does.

Also some of those "30+K" song books are often times duplicating song titles as much as 15 times (at least in the books i've seen) & are of poor quality manufacturers (NuTech, Nikkodo, SGB, etc...)generally - unless it's REALLY illegal - containg SC & the likes - that the kj's didn't have the original discs for in the first place.

Mike, check out Kurt's name he posts with... with a name like "swing"...

and I have a COUPLE songs he sings... but if you're in the mood for a particular song... the kj may NOT be able to accomodate you.

I have over 16,000 tracks now. All legal. But even then, I still had three people Sat night that asked me if I had xxx song, and I didn't have it! I went home, found it on kjpro, and started to determine if I should buy the disc or not... that's my decision to make as a karaoke owner. Chances are I will, because the people that asked are HUGE spenders in the bar!

But for those that have 30,000 tracks, the first thing I'll ask is "can you prove that you won these as legal... and I don't mean buying a hard drive with them preloaded!

If they have that, I'm the FIRST person to publicly apologize for doubting them, but in today's world of laptops and computers, there ARE those that are unethical and using tracks that they didn't pay for.

Anyway, the point is, I have no problems having a spare cdg player for those that want to bring in their own discs. The home market for karaoke is EXPLODING, and that will mean more and more customers that have their own interests that the common karaoke market may not be exploring!

I just don't have have the room. My rack is filled and my back up is my second computer. I get Pop Hits monthly every month so I am always up to date with current songs everyone that has brought disc I have had there song, alot of time even the same version. After deleting all duplicates in my book I have 20,500 songs, if you can't find something to sing that's just wrong. Many times people would bring in cd's that look like they sat on the floor of a car for a winter, and I would tell them I'm not putting that in my player. Now I do not have one, it's set up with my home stereo, and staying there. I am looking into options that will allow my notebook to read and play cd+g's.

you crack me up... what percentage of pirate are you??? you own EVERY mp3 you have downloaded and played in your shows... right... you own every piece of software (including operating system, KJ PRO etc..) ... you have the rights to every video you have downloaded and burned to VCD and play in your shows... why does your definition of piracy stop at only karaoke pirates??? it amazes me what is allowable as long as it isn't karaoke...

I normally carry a few discs with me when I go out.  I like to sing a lot of songs that other people don't do and usually the KJ will be lucky to have 1 or 2 of them or they have a really crappy version.   If the KJ has them...I will sing off his/hers.  If I'm in a strange place I will ask the KJ if they allow customer's disc.  I have not found one in this area that will not do it.  The competition is so great around here that you can't afford not to.  We have a karaoke bar on every corner.  Just in my town here north of Memphis on any Friday or Saturday night there are 5 karaoke shows going on within 5 to 10 minutes of each other.  And that doesn't include what's going on in Memphis which is about a 30-45 min drive.

I let people bring their own discs most of the time, though I do request that before they give me their disc check the book to see if I don't already have that version of that song.  My books tell after each song whether the disc is Chartbusters, Sunfly, or Soundchoice (the three disc companies we use.)  This is just because I have ran a nightmare show where 5 competing KJ's literally started giving me discs left and right the wanted to sing and I had trouble keeping up with them all.  I had 40 discs on my table at one time, with people taking off, not taking the discs back, etc.  My wife thinks they were trying to just be jerks about it but I play fair, it's my job, and we got it all sorted out.  Besides if they were being jerks I won't sink to that level, and I'll play at their own game and win at it too.

Anyway I'm rambling on.

And yes I CONSTANTLY expand my repetoire. For example I tried 3 new ones for me last night---Hall & Oates SARA SMILE, Jeff Healy AINT IT A (@$%&#!), and RIdin with the king. Those happen to be common ones that most DJ's have. But again most stuff I sing is so OBSCURE that the majority of the KJ's dont have them. Theres jsut not enough demand from customers to warrant purchasing them.

Obscure ones:
-Legend of Wooley Swamp-Charlie Daniels
-The Walkin BLues-Royal Crown Revue
-Mr. Pinstripe Suit--Voodoo Daddy
-Live and Learn
-Night shift-Commodores
-Do you believe in Magic-Lovin Spoonful(another recent addition)

Again even the people with the huge laptop or server assortments  ususualy DONT have the ones I like to do. And when I go out I like to sing WHAT I LIKE TO SING--not what I'm made to choose from because the DJ cant or wont accomodate the cd's that I bring with me.  So again I go elsewhere which equals some small amount of lost revenue for the bar short term and moreso long term, multiplied by however many other people leave and dont return for the same reason.

I hardly sing songs they other people sing. There have about 50 or more songs that I sing that few or no one else sing. And they are not in the book.

always good to change the subject...

For the record, I DO own all my mp3s I play at my show.

For the record, no I do NOT have the rights to the downloaded VIDEOS of older songs... if you can show me a place where I can buy them, I will.

PERIOD.
