Sounds like a good idea.  I wonder which systems are more prone to skipping than others.

At this point in time I am not too worried about skiping; the problem is finding a player that have multiplex function.

Get a cheap portable with tv screen built in from Radio Shack and a power inverter unit to make 120v from 12vdc and plug it in and go---you could connect the outputaudio into your car stereo for a big full sound. Plug in the mic that comes with it and your in business!

Hey, thats a good alternative. much cheaper than what I have in mind. I can get  someone to make a power inverter unit if I can find one (We use 230v here). Thanks for the input.

Nah, don't bother with 230VAC inverters if you don't have to and if they aren't as readily available there or as cheap as they are over here.

This is a world economy now, right? So shop the world!

Just e-shop any 110V unit you want and then order a 110V inverter to go with it....the odds are you might save lots of bling and open up lots more choices of equipment.....

Your car is 12VDC Neg groung like ours here, so it doesn't matter if you use a 110V inverter to power 110v gear or a 230 V inverter on 230V equipment....Your car will support either.

I saw this done on an episode of MTV's Pimp My Ride.  It was pretty sweet, they put a 20" LCD monitor on the inside of the trunk lid that would fold down for karaoke use.  Then they gutted the trunk of the car, mounted a JVC triple tray into the left side of the trunk and put some incredible stereo components on the right.  Of course the trunk itself was occupied by more speakers than most of us use for a club show!  I remember thinking how cool it would be to be able to karaoke out of the trunk of your car!

Mike, That would be great, I am thinking more of singing from the drivers' seat with the a hand-free mic. I love those tinny LCD monitor they put just below the dashboard. I just check it out in the local car audio shop and it cost between US$80 to almost $200.
It will be fun driving around town; window  down, speakers at full blast and me singing my heart out. I will have tons of listeners. :dancin: [/quote]

As far a singing from the passenger seat you need a player and a mixer. I suggest using a poertable dvd player most will play vcds and tiger direct has 5" LCD screens on sale for $50. Pick up a battery powered behringer mixer, run the dvd player into it and run the out on the mixer into an aux in on the car stereo, or get a tape adapter or an FM modulator just take some messing with cables.

Couple things to consider.

1. In most places if the video is visible to the driver while the car is in motion it's illegal.

2. There is a reason they have laws about #1.

3. If I was going to do it and make it visible to the drivers I'd flip the video signal to a mirror image and mount it flat on the dash in front of the instrument console.  You'd see a reflection on the windscreen (windshield) that would look correct.  It would also be translucent so you could see right through it. (but again, illegal in most places!)

4. If all your discs are VCD's you could copy the tracks directly to a pc mounted in the car and play them that way as mpeg video (even a cheap laptop will work).

There are lots of ways to make this all work but when I start setting up my Miata I'll be using a pc based solution to take advantage of GPS software, movie playback, wardriving, and lots of other really cool things to put in the car that a 'normal' deck might not support.  BTW, I'll be using a Sony head unit with an addon that has USB input that connects to a pc for sound.  It's recognized by the pc as a USB sound card and it pipes directly into the sony head unit - you just select the input like you would a CD changer and use the pc to play what you want.  I little different but VERY plausible.

I saw a guy the other day driving down the road, reading the newspaper, talking on a cell phone, and shaving all at the same time. I sure wish he was singing karoake as well, as I would probably be dead.

I'm not sure moving cars and karaoke go together....

Here ya go: Get a panel van, gut the back, mount an entire system in the rear, and sing on the roof while your buddy drives, ala teen wolf.  Don't forget the obligatory disco ball hanging from the interior of the van and try to fit a matress back there if you can. Karaoke groupies will love it. You may want to invest in hiring a midget or a clown as the driver....

I think its ilegal in my country to have those video screen in the way of the driver , but there is no law to say we cant sing while driving. Sure the mic need to be hand free.
The pc/lap top idea is great. There is no need for large HD cos I only need to load it with those songs that I want to sing then.
This is good for practise while driving to karaoke pub and on the way back sing those song that the KJ have no time to play esp when rotation is large.

So you are saying that  I'll see the words to Jim Morrison's "This is the End" on your windshield as you drive across the center lane and plow into me head on.  How fitting :)

Dont worry am the slowest driver around; doing top seed of 80km/h but mostly at 70kmh. I goto sing almost every nite but I hardly consume alcohol. That make a fairly save driver on the road. I dont make call from car and never ans my phone while driving.

Hmmm...

This could be interesting. However, there are some things to consider as pointed out by others. Usually I just pop in the cdg and sing while driving - no video display just the music.

Hang on trying to type this reply on my laptop while talking on my cellphone, smoking a cigarette, drinking my coffee, and of course driving at 20 mph above the posted speed limit...

j/k

Extremely dangerous and stupid, this whole idea. While driving, you are in control driving of a lethal weapon. Talking on cellphones, reading karaoke lyrics, under the influence of alcohol..............all the same dangerous sport. If I were you, I'd put the whole idea out of my head.

Badsinger, I don't know where you are from exactly within Asia, but I spend many many moons in Taiwan, China and Thailand, and the people drive like maniacs there already. You reading karaoke lyrics while driving, will most certainly increase the death toll on the roads.

Sorry my friend, I am totally against your idea and would strongly advise you against it.

Just my humble opinion. :2cents:
