Well, week one is in the books, and I've got to call it a success.  We managed to sign up four teams of three singers (even have a few alternates lined up).  Because of the scoring system we use (gender benders garner an extra 5 points) we had a whole lot of folks crossing the gender line.  The majority of the singers were singing songs that they had never tried before just to maximize their points.  It was great to see these hardcore karaoke regulars actually LOOKING in the songbooks again!

Check out bigmikekaraoke.com/league for details

Sounds like that was and would be a lot of fun!  :oh yeah:  Wish I could have been in the audience!  :dancin:  Who are the judges?  Are they the same every week or do they rotate out?  (You may have posted that originally, but, hey, I'm old and forgot!  :drunk:  LOL)

No judges at all.  Singers are awarded points based on the songs they sing.   The first time they sing a song in league play they get 5 points for it.  Each time after that it's only worth 1.  This encourages singers to be trying new music all the time.

If singers elect to do a gender bender (maan singing a song by a woman or vice versa) they get an extra five points added to the score.

Each week, we will also have a theme.  This week the theme was "Lah Dee Fricken Dah," and anyone who sang a song with stuff like la or woh or huh or anything like that they got a bonus point.  Therefore singing a gender bender that they had never sung before in league play that contained a la or a huh would earn them 11 points for their team.

Singers are grouped in teams of three and must be co-ed.  Points will be added up for the entire six week season and then doled out according to how well the team does.  It costs $15 per team each week, so the first place team will split $180 among themselves.

I know the singers had a rollicking good time....how'd the audience like the league?  Are you getting questions about when the next league starts?  Oh, and that's a nice prize pool.  Hey, $60 for having fun is top notch in my book!  Very innovative, Mike.  Kudos!  :worship:  :worship:

EDIT:  Just thought of a couple more questions...yeps, I'm nosey!

How does the League fit in with your rotation?  Is the League the primary "entertainment" or do you have regular rotation for the other patrons?  Do you have a limit on the number of songs the League members sing?  I just find this fascinating.

League play does not affect the rest of the rotation at all.  The singers in the league just have different colored song slips that identify them as a league player.  Otherwise they wait their turn in the rotation just like everyone else does.  Obviously, Wednesday not being a very busy night, the majority of the singers were league players anyway, but I had a handful who weren't.

The non-singers in the crowd seemed to really enjoy it too because they have seen these people sing (usually well) before and were very entertained to see them struggle a bit to sing things that were out of their comfort zones in an attempt to maximize their points in league play.

The number of songs allowed to league players is limited only by the rotation and the end of the show.  If they get there early and start the rotation, they can easily get a leg up on the competition.  In fact that's how the Karaoke Junkies jumped out to an early lead last week.  They were there at 8:30 sharp and ready to go.  Other teams had people ambling in at 9:30 or so (perfectly allowable I might add--we're VERY informal) which put them at a competitive disadvantage since the Junkies were there and hammering away in the rotation three strong from the word go.
