LOL     Oh well, there goes that theory.  Maybe the people I knew painted their Macaws grey so the neighbors would think they are decent apartment pets, I have no idea, they were deafening loud. Perhaps they didn't like me being in their space, and were jealous of the owner having company. These animals are pretty possessive of their owners attention it seems....  One particular grey was into the self mutilation behaviour, tearing it's feathers.... The poor bird was left alone a good portion of the day, and was likely attention starved. It's nice to know that the African Grey "can" be a quiet pet bird.  I'm researching the longer lived birds as pets. I can't deal with losing another pet, it's too painful.  Next pet will have to outlast me. Soon it's a trip to an aviary.  See which birds can tolerate living with me.

Stevie,

You sure know your birds very well. Try teach them to mimic your guitar. that will be fun.

p/s. The illegal trade in wildlife is huge second only to that of drug. Buy your bird from a good dealer.

Hey Bad Singer.  I'd rather teach a bird to mimic a drummer.  It'd save alot of problems  LOL

Actually I don't know much about birds. Budgies I know alot about, and I have limited knowledge of tiels.  I've been taking my time trying to learn about other species of pet bird, only because these are long term companions, it's important that a pet that might live 40 to 80 years is a pet you can tolerate living with.  The thing is, my birds up until present were taken in orphaned animals. I lucked out with one, she turned out to be the perfect pet for me.  The other I struggled with until the day she died.  She spent the first 3-4 years of her life ignored, and really didn't like people, let alone males.  She was also an EXTREMELY screechy bird. I could literally hear her from over a block away, yet this was constant, it NEVER let up.  I'd have to mist her with water to try to shut her up. It was a painful screeching sound too, sent a chill up my spine.  I don't want this type situation ever again.  I hate the thought of having to give up a pet because I can't deal with the animals behaviour.  It goes against my grain..  Next pet bird will be a baby parrot, hand-tamed, and unfortuneately probably a costly bird  LOL ..   Yet who knows. It might be a smaller species parrot too..  It WILL have to be a somewhat quiet pet.  Had I known cockatiels had the potential to be as noisey as Punky ended up being, I'd have had to initially say no to adopting her. I literally had to spend some afternoons working with earplugs on, leave the house with clenched fists, and everyday take some space away from home, when I normally needed to be home... Her shrill raspy shreek literally was like nails against a chalkboard. It's was blood curdling.  It's too bad, yet I learned a painful experience from that pet.  An experience that really made me realize that when you adopt a pet you don't know that much about, you are sometimes getting a real problem.  Of course othertimes this isn't the case.

Sabra will be 11 years old next month.  She'll live to be 80 or more if all goes well....I don't know what will happen then...my sons say they don't want her, that she''ll be going with me...lol

Just don't get a Quaker....they squawk more than macaws and NEVER shut up...

When you're doing your research don't rely on books..a lot of them have a lot of misinformation...the web has some wonderful sites...check out forums too on AOL...that's where you'll get the best info to make your decision.

Sorry, I was so "busy" in that other thread I didn't see that someone had actually paid any attention to my silly little babble here.  You know, I tried to dig around & find it- but I couldn't- I'm no good atall at finding lost things. Somewhere, not long ago, (in a land far far away called Karaoke Forum...) a man named Phil said something about having to post every once in a while or the system would delete you. I don't know about you- but I don't wanna be deleted. Was that a joke? Cause if so- I fell for it. Anyhow, that's what  I meant. I would absolutely DIE if I got deleted, lol. What in the world would I do with my free afternoons if I could not come HERE???

Back to topic......... thanks for the break. lol

Funny thing is Jeanne,  I loved the budgie I had so much, I was seriously thinking about a quaker keet.  That's good to know.  I have an article here my folks clipped out've a newspaper someplace...I think the international section of the NY Times. The article is entitled:

"Parrot might have been Churchills, but she's not saying"

The article is from March of last year.  This old Macaw was born in 1899, and the owner claims she defineately was WInston CHurchills bird.

I also have something here which is very interesting, especially since this is

All Forums --> Singers Showcase --> pet parrots
chat   LOL

This science article reads:

Avian brains got a bad reputation from years ago  (and it procedes to read about
how "bird brain" is a misconception in terms of a birds actual intelligence).

It discusses African Grey parrot intelligence, and ability to reason as found in studies

"The African Grey parrot in it's native habitat has learned to put walnuts on roadways for cars to crack. African Grey parrots not only talk, they have a sense of humor and make up new words. Baby songbirds babble like infants using the leftsides of their brains".

The article goes on and on.. Yet a caption also states:

"Pigeons memorize, Crow's invent. Parrots teach other parrots"

Basically, the theme of the article is that birds are at least as intelligent as hominids.  Yet not all species of bird.

there was a fascinating show on animal planet ...  do animals talk i think was the name of it....they showed an african grey that was actually communicating with her owner AND they did a experiement that showed the owner looking at pics and the parrot in another room guessed an amazingly correct amount of times.  Sabra said she really enjoyed it...

ROFLAO.

I wonder if that was one of Eileen Peppertons studies with Alex.  I mentioned in the post that was deleted,  Dr. Peppertons African Grey communicates with her. It asks for a banana by referring to a "long Yellow".  If you haven't already,  look up Dr. Eileen Pepperton, and Alex (African Grey)..  Alex pulls a chain each day when he reads the clock, pulling the chain turns on his favorite soap opera.. I recall the bird is quite fond of a dog on that show  LOL ..  Alex constructs phrases showing comprehension.  The bird shows quite an ability to reason, has an amazing vocabulary. Eileen Pepperton and Alex are at University of New Mexico..  This has been a long term study on Parrot intelligence.  Jeanne,  which newspaper is that in the photo that your bird's reading ?

I have long ago given up keeping bird as pet. I now have 3 dogs; one is alway at the back of the house to guard the back exit, and the other two have their own room in the house and sometime guard the entrance of the house at nite

I'm abit slow, yet I just realized that this states the bird is able to read the owners mind. Has a developed sense that humans don't have. I felt that my birds could sense my mood, even when I was in different rooms. There was something strange about how they reacted towards various emotions I was experiencing. A person that had this intuitive skill would be considered clairvoyant. Yet wouldn't most dog and cat owners say they've sensed this same thing ?  I think many would.  I enjoyed reading articles regarding "psychic" abilities among pets.

Either that or the bird has a knack for probability, and would be quite useful to take to casino's.

I really need to go to aviary's, and breeders Jeanne.  All the reading in the world won't give me an idea of the actual birds dispositions, and real characteristics. I spent alot of time in the "Pets&Vets" site.  Not sure if you've ever been there, but it's a great place with loads of owners, breeders, and techs.  It's a cute site too. First time I went in there the front page was an animated puppy chasing a butterfly around.. song playing was "dog and butterfly" in the background in midi... I figured someone had to know what they were doing  LOL   :oh yeah:

The site is full of bird breeders,  A few of them were also writers for "birdTalk" magazine which I've subscribed to for years... Well up until last year anyway.
