How about suggestions for songs for me to sing where I don't have to try and sound like somebody else?

Why not be bold and make a song your own. Being original and putting your own stamp on a song, is much more appreciated then trying to mime someone else, very very few people actually sound like the original artist.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Maybe I'll try some John Denver. Great songs--not the best voice in the world. I oughta be able to sing'em better than him :)

Ooooooooo.... I wish there were more JD songs out there in CDG format.
Dave, who says you need to find new songs to sing? Unless you're already used to singing the current songs you sing like the the original, you can sing those songs in your own style. I do a bit of both. I know that I don't sound like any particular artist, but some songs I will try to imitate, and others I will just sing in my own style.

Try a song that youve never even HEARD before. Then sing it completly in YOUR STYLE. That way there's no way you could ever TRY TO MIMIC someone else. If youve never heard someone sing it before, how could you possibly mimic them??? Result==COMPLETELY ORIGINAL performance!

That works on some songs. Songs where there is no "original artist." I did "America the Beautiful" over the fourth in my own voice and it worked well. Tried it on other songs this past weekend and it flopped.

Dave.......try singing Sinatra songs in the style of John Denver or someone else it may fool everyone and still keep your longing to mimic someone.

Just be yourself even if you are singing a cover. I hate it when someone does a song and people want to compare it to the original singer. If I wanted to hear the original...I would listen to the CD. Sure......it's nice to hear an Elvis song by someone that sounds like him but I also think it's nice to hear someone use their own vocals. Gives me a whole new outlook on the song instead of focusing on the original artist as long as the melody is pretty much in tack.

I've done this, I went with the music and the lyrics and now a few people in our "crowd" have picked it up (the way I do it) and have done it at other shows...
The first time I heard this specific song done by the artist I hated it and thought that if I had heard her singing it before I started to I never would have sung the song!

Actually what I think I need is a repetoire of songs that are grouped to coincide with the current condition of my sinuses or other respiratory condition. Like:
Stuffed up nose: John Denver
Bronchitus: Bruce Springsteen
Out of breath, unable to hold a note: Frank Sinatra
Had too many: Jim Morrison
Sober and clear voice: ????? (I dunno, never happens)
Ha Ha

Well I've said it before. The comparison goes on subconsiously in most people. Unavoidable for Karaoke.

IMO - mimicking a song is a great way to help develop a style, if you don't already have them. The tough part is getting stuck in a style you like or are good at. At karaoke, people do look for someone as close to the original as possible, but they're open to people tweaking it to be their own thing.
My thought is mix it up a bit- try things you're not sure you're good at - different singers, genres, etc. I went on a Sinatra bend for a while and turned some of them into rockin' renditions - people loved it. Just depends on what you're after.
Dave - just pick something you've always liked but never dared sing - maybe something really current - or outside you're comfort zone. It will be hard to mimick that - just be yourself.

I've heard a lot of men singing Frank Sinatra that I could say it was "sacrilegist"!
Music is Music. Who gives a rat's ____ who sang the song first?
If you like it and want to sing it............SING IT!!!
