In the song Sin Wagon, talk to the KJ and ask him/her to cut the song off before the second break. Most of the people who sing this song at my show do this, so much in fact that I always ask now whenever someone signs up to sing it.
That 1:53 to stand there just to sing , "I'll fly away on a sin wagon" is silly

WOW! some fantastic suggestions from everyone!! My two favorite faster-attitudy songs are:
When God Fearin Women Get the Blues - Martina McBride
Big Deal - Leanne Rimes
pretty much any of Wynonna's faster stuff.... Jo Dee Messina's... Gretchen Wilson's stuff for sure (might be too popular though)
what about Gender Benders? Some of Garth Brooks rockier stuff might be really cool too... hell if your voice is raspy like Bonnie Rait's then I would even try some Montomery Gentry's stuff...
Trick Pony's stuff would be cool too if you have that raspy sound...
I think a good idea would be to pick something that people KNOW, but haven't heard in a while... that they kinda forgot about... so they can be like "holy crap! I haven't heard this song in FOREVER" that usually gets ppl pretty excited.
Can't wait to hear how it goes! Keep us posted!

Oh god I am so nervous!!! The contest is tonight and I have so many friends going. I went to a place to practice last night and did really well. I can really get into Sin Wagon. <==oh and if you play the song, this little guy matches the beat... kinda scary actually. It starts at 9 tonight and I will have plenty of time to get warmed up when I get off work at 5. I am going to see about the KJ cutting the song off at the last verse. If not I will just have to keep moving i guess. Wish me luck!

Okay first things first. Thank you all so much for your help. It was really cool of you to help a newbie like me. You suggestions were really helpful
On Tuesday night the contest started at 10 and I had full table of friends supporting me. The competition was tough. The people I was worried about were as follow :
Second singer- male, a regular, sang "Drift Away" Third singer- female, sang "At Last" Fifth singer- Male, a regular, sang "Tiny Dancer"... had Elton's sunglasses on. ninth singer- female, a regular, sang "I will survive" had 10 people dancing on the dance floor. :dancin:
I was number 7. I wore jeans, a sexy black shirt, and a cowboy hat . I sang my heart out and used the entire stage. I made eye contact and had people clapping. On the music brake I danced and later had people tell me that it was there favorite part and it looked great. I got a long applause and then it was time to cool my heels till they announced the winner. They finally announced that there was a tie!
Sadly I wasn't one of them but you know what... I had a great time and that is all that matters

Thats the spirit ! You'll find very rarely in a Karaoke contest the best singer wins ..sometimes YES more than not the regulars get a few extra points for being BAR REGULARS. I guess it really depends on who was judging and what criteria they were using. But you can be sure if anyone associated with the establishment is involved in the Judging ....BAR REGULARS get a few extra points.
Congrats anyway and keep trying !

Congratulations!!
It's great that you performed so well, had a great time and most of all...... were able to keep the contest in perspective and be able to reflect back on the contest as it being a great time!
Susie
P.S. I have several friends that even after all these years still get upset when/if they don't win... I may print your response and hand it to them before they compete again!

If you can do Bonnie Raitt you can do Mary Chapin Carpenter.
You MIGHT be able to do Melissa Etheridge - although if you're goal is to recreate and not have your style, she has a gravely voice. Etheridge is pretty low range for a woman - I can sing any of her material in key, but it souinds like a Vegas lounge act.
Heck maybe over done, but if I was a woman singer and I wanted to bring down the house and I could sing anything, "I Will Survive," by Gloria Gaynor comes to mind!

The breaks are the hard part, and it sounds like you carried it off very well!
I don't enter contests, not because I'm "too good" or even because I think I'm lousy, I just don't , go figure. One of these days perhaps I'll get brave and give it a go. I sure saw LOTS of great suggestions here!
