In Kenny Chesney's song "Anything But Mine", the last verse sounds like he is singing into a tin can. On my home system I can somewhat achieve the effect by holding the mic under a 16 oz water glass and directing my singing into it. I tried it out at a show with an empty beer glass (during the last instrumental I finished it off), and to me and the KJ it sounded right, but the mic didn't pick up anything. She wasn't aware of any settings on the mixer to achieve the effect.
If you are familiar with the song, what would be the best way to achieve the effect? Is there a setting for the KJ to make on the mixer or should I try something else?

Remember the song by Cher, "Believe"? She also had some effects that could not be reproduced on the fly. You really need to know your system and play with various effect settings. Still, the gals performing that song, were doing a great job without the special effects, and just the normal reverb, as used for every other performance.
Don't bother trying to achieve that in your local karaoke bar. The KJ will need to change the effects on the mic just for your last verse, with the correct timing. I as KJ wouldn't do it, because I would need to experiment first with the different effects. You might be able to do it at home through your own effects module, but if you tell the KJ the settings, and he/she has a different module, you're buggered again. Try making the song your own.

You could "cup the mic" ie hold both hands around the ball of the mic leaving a small opening to sing into. This will give the effect of the AM midrange heavy sound that that line sounds like - HOWEVER, if the monitor speakers are turned up loud or the speaker placement is in any kind of line of sight to the mic, you could cause alot of feedback. All the kj would need to do is turn the mic down a bit while you sing that line using the above method & you should achieve a similary passable result.
The effect that was used (or at least i've achieved the same in the studio) was actually a guitar distortion pedal set with a high midrange, little bass & treble & a tad of distortion.

Bingo, when I sing Wall Of Voodoo's Mexican Radio I do this to the line, "I wish I was in Tijuana, eating BBQ'ed iguana..."

Toot toot.
Since we got the creative emu1820m, we've been thinking about adding a third file to the mp3+g format for controlling it with autokdj. A midi file to control the 1820m's effect presets.
Only trouble is, every karaoke song out there would have to have its effects scored in time to the music using cakewalk or some similiar midi editor.
The only other thing I worry about is if the scoring of effects is considered part of the original composition of the song. Then we're talking licensing.
But ya, we're workin on it.
