Ok... I'm back... :)  haven't heard any news...must have been around a 3-4 maybe  ...but don't know where it originated from.. It kinda caught me off guard... haven't felt one for quite some time... I just said to the women in my office the other day... we are overdue for an earthquake... maybe that was just a good stress reliever.... Anyways... getting back to the topic... even though a song is marked critique, I don't always do that... I just have fun listening most of the time and drop a note that I did... If someone really wants feedback and says so in their description, I try and give my opinion for what its worth... Sometimes songs are sang with such beautiful emotion, I might tend to give a higher rank if I do rank... because I felt it in my heart... Isn't that what you are suppose to feel? If it touches me alot... that's how I feel... sorry I didn't grade it note for note.. that's me... See... I'm not perfect either... Well... now I'm listening to the news... we did have an earthquake thats for sure... I'm going to find out the details... Take care always... Dona

Dona....after reading your post that included the earthquake I had to go look at your profile to see where you are from.   I live right on the New Madrid Fault here in Tennessee so we have them sometimes too.  It's a scary thing when the earth starts moving!   Hope everything is okay out in California!

Hi Rita.... Hey  ... you know what I'm talking about then! I did find out that it was a 5.6,  stronger than I thought... but then I still don't know where it originated from... I didn't catch the name of the place.... probably quite some distance from me..... Well.. now I'll just be waiting for some little aftershocks... hopefully little ones!

Russ, I disagree...a bit...

I think everyone has their own way of ranking. I will give a song a 10 if I cannot find any flaws in it. I don't take into account things like, the person's basic voice.  I just go by how well they sing this particular song.  I tend to give a lot of 8's, 9's, and 10's.  If the singer is really awful, I just don't rank or comment.  So, yes, there are some songs I would give a 1 or 2 to, but I just don't bother.  I fgure that person is beyond help so...my comments aren't going to help them and I don't feel like slamming them in the rankings.

Some people only give 9's or 10's if that singer is fantastic.  So it just depends on your perspective.

And, just for the record, I abide by the speed limit, so I don't think there's any comparison.  :)

Dona, glad you survived the earthquake!!

I reply to you Suzanne, that's one of my points. Why have a ranking system that includes 1 and 2 cause it is viewed as "slamming" or whatever you want to call it, and just never ever used. That's why I prefer a redefinition of the levels as  1 (tops), 2 (A-OK), and 3 (could use this or that in my opinion), no other levels. So I'm not sure where you are disagreeing actually...

And Suzanne, really, you never exceed the speed limit????? If so good for you but you're the only person I've ever known in my entire life to do so. Just don't try it here in Phoenix cause you'd get in trouble quick! What I said about speed limits is entirely relevant to my point of people not staying within defined guidelines and applies to the vast majority of the population (there's alwayz an exception)....

Personally I don't care all that much if a comment is not replyed to. I like it cause its a good way to get to know people, ask questions, but for me not absolutely required.

Russ

I didn't mean that it was a requirement for me either.  I guess I didn't say it right.  It's just a pet peeve.  I just think it's common courtesy, I guess.

I do agree that a 1 - 2 - 3 ranking system would be better than what we've got.  But I'm sure if we had that in place we would find some fault with it, too.   It's just so hard to come up with a fool proof way when we have so many different genres and people with different likes and dislikes.  But that's what makes the world go round.

By the way.......I go over the speed limit ever chance I get and my boyfriend is a state trooper...LOL

Have fun people.

Thats what karaoke singing is all about. Ranking, comments and reply to comments should be seen as part of the fun.

I just meant I don't agree with the part about why people do different rankings. I think 1, 2, 3 is a fine idea.  Sorry I wasn't clear.

Maybe if you're in the fast lane, and traffic is having to go around you, you can get in trouble if you don't keep up, but that's not true for the slow lane.  That's why they have those variations.

So, I think the ranking system should be changed. Get rid of the 10, 9, 8 thing and sub with something simpler like 1,2 , 3.   The current  system seems backwards from how most everything else works, you know, the best song is number 1, not number 10! In sports the best team is in 1'st place, not 10th,  etc.. So the highest ranked songs should be num 1!

****1 (I liked that one to the max, number one hit in my book),

****2 really good, enjoyed (but didn't knock my socks off yet OK to listen to, maybe tweek this or that, maybe not, still enjoyed the song) and

****3 (ok here's a thing or two I noticed, and its your duty to say something if you're going to rank at this level, else don't leave a comment) Ranking at this level is not a given right, you are responsible to state your reasons for doing so if you are going to rank, else don't leave a comment.

Well, having said that now I feel better.....

Russ
Russ -

I love the idea...

Let me work on th eother problems then maybe I'll get around to it.

Actually I eventuall wanted to create a FIVE STAR ranking system - so we shall see...

................ and then every one get's pissy again if they don't get ones. Uptight and grumpy when they get two's and God forbid, if someone actually get's a three. Then we're back again with http://www.karaoke-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=4850

This has been debated since day one and will never be resolved. Deal with it, nobody is perfect!

I've gotta agree with Allstar..... it don't matter if you rank with numbers, letters, stars, buttons, or sexual favors (LOL.. couldn't resist) the fact still remains... Some people will fluff.... others will be honest... and people will still be hurt if they don't get as many bj's as the next!

Russssssss Blimey I got to say I whole heartedly agree with you I've had subs drop from 10 to 8 and yet all the comments are positive. I don't mind getting a 7 ,8 what ever as long as it comes with a comment saying what could of improved in my sub. like Jason I don't expect 10's but when you get one and watch it drop you got to wonder whats going on in some peoples minds, if I ranked a 8 or lower I'd say and have in the past. I'm starting to set mine to none rank cause of all the good comments and yet it drops lower with no reason its so insulting to be treated in such a way that a person fakes a remark just to lower the score.
Who ever you are show some grit and accually say your true feelings on a sub.

Infact I have been accused of doing it and I can state here and now I'm not that shallow or sad that I'd lie to get at someone you can take it from me If I comment its a ten or I'd say I never liked it.

Well seems like I'm the target of some hate you getting tens fan lol. since I returned yesterday and found subs lower then they were two days ago I removed them one even got lowered twice. maybe you would like me to remove all my subs. like I said before having a 10 isn't what I expect to get but getting all positive comments then see three sinking in two days is getting annoying as the person seems to unrank. in edit, what the hell do you get out of it, if you can't be honest with me then go listen to someone else.

WOW.  I can tell I are a raw newbie.  I sing because I love to sing.  I LOVE to listen, I love to comment and I love the comments I get.  It can be an ego booster to get a 10 overall on a song, especially the first time (the only time, I are NEW) but, it doesn't stop me from hearing what I coulda (or wish I coulda) done better.

If you have advice about how I might sound better, you BET I want to hear it.  But I been doing "Just for Fun" submissions because well, the numbers don't seem all that important, unless I'm looking at how many people listened.  How many people commented.  THAT I care about.  Go figure, I am an odd duck.  (I'll do my best not to quack too loudly!)

My little hamster pic has caused a lot of fun.  I personally rate a 10 if I really love it.  I doubt MY 10 is the same as anyone else's 10.  It's pretty much the same in gymnastics or any sport with "judges"

To be perfectly serious and frank, I don't feel qualified to be ranking people.  I love the discussions, I love to hear stuff I've never heard before.  I'm fallin for the standards and the ratpack stuff I never listened to before.  It's just great stuff!  I love the personalities.

And, I adore hearing how different people do the same song.  It's so interesting and fun to me.  I may feel that some sing  songs I sing better than me, but I won't stop singin' em, I'll just try harder :)

So ranking isn't that all important to me.  I can see by this forum that it IS very important to others, so I will try harder to discern what the ranks should be.  The lowest I've given is an 8, I'm afraid.  But ya know, most of the folks I listen to are dang good!!!!  They are voices I'd go to a club to see were they in a band.  In my opinion that makes them higher than a 6 or a 7, BUT that may be colored by the other ranks I've seen on the subs.  I am not perfect either, I fear.

Anyway, I'll finally stop ramblin at ya'll LOL

TJ

Hi I'm fairly new here.  I had no idea that people were hurt by not getting a score of 10..  I personally think there are too many choices, therefore, most everyone gets at least a score of 8.  If I think they are less than 8 which is "very good", I don't comment or rate them.  I like the idea of limiting to choices to either 1-3 or using a five stars rating, since apparently no one will rate if it's under a 7.

There are many different kinds of singers, those that do it for fun without working on perfecting their singing and those who strive to sound EXACTLY like the original recording.   I think striving for EXACT perfection can sometimes be a real problem, though I'm sometimes guilty of this myself.  For some this may be the challenge and fun of learning the song and in my opnion it's okay as long as it doesn't cause the person distress.  If you are having fun, keep doing what you're doing.

Another view I have is that people have different opinions on what qualitfies as a 10.  Some just like the song or sing it themself so they know if it is being sung correctly (according to how THEY perceive it should sound).  Some like lots of effects and others do not.  Same thing when the singer sounds too flat, or the music too loud, etc. etc.  It's all personal preference.

People arn't getting upset about not getting 10's  its people pretending to like a song and lower the rank, you will find was the topic.
Think you must have misread some of the postings

I'd settle for a 5 if the comment that came with it was helpful

Here's the problem.  What if you listen to the song, and just think it's sort of average, but it already has a rank of like, 9.5?  What if the singer hasn't really committed any errors, but you just don't like the sound of their voice?

Would people be upset if you ranked it a 5, destroyed the previous ranking, and commented, "It was just sort of...average.  No obvious errors but I just don't care for your voice."

My experience has been that someone doing as above would practically get run off the site on a rail.  But if you listen, and truly think as above, and then don't rank or comment, aren't you suggesting that the current ranking is accurate?  You can't win.

I've been on here for awhile now and I've decided there is really no fair way to rank.  Maybe people should be ranked on the number of listens they receive I don't know.  I stopped putting mine up for rank a few weeks back and it wasn't because I was getting a low score it was because I actually thought I was getting more 10's than I deserved.  I deleted all of my songs that were ranked.   I just want to enjoy the music and mingle with the people.  I was beginning to feel like that 10 sticking out there on a song was keeping people from listening and commenting or at least commenting.  I can tell if someone enjoys what I do by how often they visit me.  If someone listens once and never returns then they probably don't like it.  Everything on here is just a matter of each person's opinion and what they like in music or how they think music should sound.  Some are stuck in one genre and can't have an open mind on the others.   I don't think we should make this site a contest.  I don't think we should have to judge the singers that may not be so hot but they are working on their music so hard up against some of the singers on here that have been singing all their life.  There are a huge range of singers on here and all of them have something good to contribute.

Just my two cents.
