At the risk of sounding shallow, I must admit that I don't sing purely for the 'joy' of music... I could get the joy singing at home, alone on my couch.  I do enjoy singing, but bundled into that enjoyment is approval, the reaction of the crowd.  I honestly wouldn't enjoy going up on stage and singing terribly (tanking).  I get a rush out of getting a rousing applause when the two singers before me hardly got a polite smattering. Or when I'm walking back to my seat and people are high fiving me, or asking me if I'm going to sing again and what songs I'll be singing.    I don't think my need for approval is much different than the reason most guys get into rock bands...for the roar of the crowd and the chicks!  :dancin:  Ok, call me shallow, call me insecure, just don't call me late for dinner...or karaoke.  :oh yeah:

I think there's a little of that in all of us, else why bother to go out at all?  It would be much easier to stay at home and sing. You're not shallow, just honest.

As far as trying different songs is concerned, as a KJ I am always encouraging the singers to try new songs, and fortunately in the main they do, bringing their favourites out on occasion as well.

I have to be honest here as well, and say that if I heard the same songs being sung over and over again, week in week out, I'd be as bored as hell, let alone the audience, and that would probably show somewhat during the hosting.

To those reluctant to try a new song, I always say to them, that if that song had never been written, they would be singing something else..so why not not try something else just to see what it's like, if they don't like it they can go back to their comfort blanket, but I can assure you that 99% of people that try a new song once, then go on to make even more new choices as time goes on.
