I think there's a little of that in all of us, else why bother to go out at all? It would be much easier to stay at home and sing. You're not shallow, just honest.
As far as trying different songs is concerned, as a KJ I am always encouraging the singers to try new songs, and fortunately in the main they do, bringing their favourites out on occasion as well.
I have to be honest here as well, and say that if I heard the same songs being sung over and over again, week in week out,
I'd be as bored as hell, let alone the audience, and that would probably show somewhat during the hosting.
To those reluctant to try a new song, I always say to them, that if that song had never been written, they would be singing something else..so why not not try something else just to see what it's like, if they don't like it they can go back to their comfort blanket, but I can assure you that 99% of people that try a new song once, then go on to make even more new choices as time goes on.
