Most Kj's will agree and reccomend that you not use midi karaoke files in a commercial setting. They are the equivlent of casio keyboard karaoke.
As far as the actual player I not a big fan of cavs equipment, jvc makes a much better product.

also, consider heavily that some people who had gone ahead with CAVS are no longer supporting either the jb-99 jukebox NOR the supercdg that they are using.
Enter at your own risk. Stick with a proven and the most popular... cdg. If you want to convert to computer for your own sake or company, then that's a choice YOU make. But you could always go BACK to cdg! Unless the ones you bought were stricktly in that windows format! Like Top Hits Monthly releases their sixpacks (in not only cdg, but also jb-99 and wincdg!)

My initial conversion to computer karaoke was with Cavs I backed up about 35,00 0 or more wirh Cavs format on cd's and everybody was arguing the legalities My Soundchoice foundation and some brick serres All sgb and sava I still have cd's umpty dump thru umpty dump burned on cd's.. Before I was a kj I was burning cd's to take to shows with Cavs and Cdrwin. Cavs is another software which I paid for prob $150 dont remember and can still use it to rip or whatever . Was downloading songs when their selectiom was less than mine now. However due to forums like this I was able to learn about new ways ( I think I was setting up sytems to do shows 6 years ago)
however Cavs did make the mistake of trying to corner the market with encryption and propietary software. ( I love XP now, that's another story) This industry is still governed by competition and fairness. If you want to be limited by their product rules and limitations then but their players. I wouldnt buy a car that only the manufacture could supply the gas for. Tig I luvya but didnt see any advertisements there just a viable inquiry....

Midi?
If you can't get the tracks any other way then it might be ok. For home use where people don't care about the sound quality then it might be ok.
Midi is popular overseas in some of the asian markets... but I've yet to see it used in the US. The sound quality is marginal at best. Even the CDG's using synth and midi tracks aren't widely used as the sound quality is marginal at best.

I don't know for sure, but I would suspect they use something similar because you really need to get the file size pretty small to fit on the chips they use for expansion.

MagicSing microphone uses MIDI and is very portable. The quality of MIDI is nowhere near CDG, but MagicSing can serve as a backup unit.
I was at a party where the KJ 's CDG player failed. Fortunately, one of the guests brought his MagicSing microphone. It does pay to have a backup unit. The last you want to have is an irate customer.

Actually, the KJ had a dual RSQ CDG player but it died a painful death in the midst of the party. The KJ's husband was the "sound guy" and was desperately getting their other unit, a jukebox style player, to work. Apparently, he was also having trouble with it. It was a sad sight.
Well, the show went on using the MagicSing mic... until one of the guests picked a song that was on the list but the MIDI chip for it was not currently installed. Anxious to please the would-be singer, the owner of the mic hastily removed one of the chips and inserted the spare chip that had the song. You know what happened? The MagicSing also failed. After many minutes of frantically fixing the mic, the owner gave up and that was the end of the singing. Lesson learned? Never, ever, replace a chip without turning that dang mic off.
Luckily, there was another source of entertainment. It turns out the celebrant had to hire a KJ and a DJ because she couldn't find someone who does both. We danced and danced and danced the rest of the night. And I have the calluses on my feet to prove it.
Feeling so embarrased that their equipment failed, to the dismay and disappointment of not only the celebrant but also the guests, the KJ offered not to charge the celebrant. Well, at least she made the offer... But the damage was done, the celebrant was so irate but kept her composure. She wasn't gonna pay the KJ anyway.
Sometimes, it pays to have a backup to a backup in case you have one of those nights when nothing seems to go right.
