Hey, my name is ardis, as you can see to your left <<<<, and I am currently making a professtional album....yay for me right? Well, i have wrote several songs and have the basics down for them, but i am lacking some knowledge with the whole thing, so i was wondering if some of the friendly people here, who may have experience in this area, possibly could help me out? I would be greatful for any advise you could give me.
Also, if you want to hear some songs, just check out my songs on Karaoke Scene, I have about five up, but they are all cover songs.
Thank you again for any input you may have for me.
Ardis

Hi Ardis,
Send your best 4 to 5 songs, they say they don't have time to listen to any more than that. Send photos. and a brief bio. Make sure that you get a control number to who you send it to or they will throw it in the trash. You'll have to call to get the number. Here is my publisher Abear/Songtown Publishing (Ron Hebert) He take gospel, country and pop. Also you can go www.talentmatch.com and www.Artistnow.com you might find someone on these sites www.soundclick.com is also pretty good. They are not major labels but sometimes you can get a few ideas.
Well hope this helps. and don't give anyone any money. Stan Loh (lagusaya2) has plenty of knowledge on this also. he is on ss you probably know that. he is one one who told me not to pay them. Good guy.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I already have sent out a demo, and i got great replies. but they all said that i have a better chance if i could write my own material. So i mowped around for about a month, saying i couldn't do it...and then finally i began to write lyrics in a notebook, after it was filled, i started another, and then slowly i made my way to creating the music...
I really want to make an album, but i haven't alot of cash to work with...so i will try looking at some of the sites you gave me, and maybe my luck will turn. Thank you so much for your help. You guys (and gals) rock!

Well, I haven't really written a complete song, I have several I started on but never finished. I just sing everyone's but my own. Usually country, some pop and Gospel.
I play the keyboard some, have a real nice one, can save my music to disk. BUT!
Most of what I play is classic, so I don't write any music either. Oh well what can I say. I just like to sing anyway. (or was this to Jose?!) LOL
Good Luck!

JOSE! ya never know!! Playin the violin could be your schtick!! know what I mean? It could be what sets you apart. If you could play it so that you give it a different sound that will match your style... hell that would be cool!!
I mean... ok... I picture you as a sorta Usher-type artist... imagine now that Usher's doin one of his concerts.... doin all those crazy moves he has... his crazy R&B persona... AND THEN he stops and pulls out a violin and starts playin it with the music?? OMG!! people would go nuts! At least I would! I'd be completely impressed..and I'm not even a big Usher fan.
OK... I'm sure some of you reading this are probably laughing your a$$ off.... but seriously.... ever artist needs their "thing" to set them apart....
I'm sorry Ardis for hijackin your thread... I just got a little excited when Jose said he plays! hahaha!! wish I had some advice for ya, but I have no clue!

Good luck on your career, Ardis! I have enough trouble finding time to work on my singing...I can't even imagine how hard it must be to write songs. I would definitely suck at that!

Ardis,
How do you record?
I use a Cd recorder hooked to my Karaoke player much better than a cassette.
Then you don't have so much expense, Do your labels on your computer and your pictures also. Of recording on the computer isn't bad either. But I gotta be up and be able to move around when I sing, so don't care much to record on the computer.
All i can say is keep sending them in.
Casey

How do I record? Well, I have a mixing board and another computer i use. They are hooked up through the usb cable, and that way i can get professtional sounding recordings. Also, i am going out of town to a recording studio in Timmins. (gilly knows where i am talking about)
I wrote about 36 songs with the music now, so i am happy, i am getting it done. But now i need to make the cds and sell them. Hopefully i can get it going, but i mean, its alot of hard work that i never expected, but i am still fighting to do it.
We will see what happens when i get in the studio....
and don't worry about talking on this thread, thats what its for! .
Thanks everyone for all the great comments. You all rock!

1st - If you are sending demos to record labels & such, DO NOT send them unsolicited. You make sure you find out WHO you need to send them to & then set up a time when you may send them - you may or may not even get to send one at all. Any unsolicited demo WILL end up in the trash can. Also make the demo WORTH looking at. A cd case in an envelope is pretty boring, they see those all the time. Spend some time with it & get creative - this shows them you are at least into the marketing aspect as well - doesn't mean anything will come of it, but they will give yours a better chance to listen to. We once sent one in an old jewelry box that we modified with a little motor that when it opened up, the disc (complete with jewel case & artwork) would slide out the front drawer while a light on top would come on & our business cards & bio would be visable & easily picked up. DO NOT shrink wrap the disc or tape the case together - they don't have time to open wrapping & it will get tossed.
2nd - music biz is hard to crack into these days. Record companies are not looking for the same ol' stuff that is out & been around - unless it is going along the lines of the "new trend where they are going to be able to make a quick buck", you are going to need to have something that is going to make whoever is listening sit up & take notice. Most demos that get submitted, if it doesn't strike them within the first 30 seconds - it's over & done with & in the trash. You only need to send 3-4 songs.
Sad thing about the record industry is they aren't looking for longevity in artists anymore (ie like Aerosmith, Stones, Fleetwood Mac, etc...), they want something new that will put a few bucks in their pocket & milk it as long as they can & once it's dying, they pull the plug & move on.
3rd - (actually should be first), the demo should sound as professional as possible. A mic hooked up to a tape recorder is not going to cut it (unless - again - it's something spectacular).
Hope this helps.
I do have 1 recording that I wrote of our band in the SS, search for Open Waters if interested.

Don't go in the forums much or would not have missed this one. I won't go into "I have written songs forever" etc. But I have and have some advice. You need an agent. You need connections. And you need 'a hook' in your material. Looks wise, you need that too to a certain extent, because videos make superstars. You're cute enough that they could fuss with you and you could pull off a video. They did me on TV, and that was no easy task.
If you wanna songwriter exchange notes, PM me. No promises as to success, but I certainly can get into serious songwriter stuff with you. I would write to chamjam too. And some of the mixer guys.
On your takes your voice is raw. I mean if you can sound good raw that is cool. But I would love to take that voice in a studio with a few tweaks and you would be amazed what can be done.
Ok, that's my 3 cents. good luck. jvj
