i just purchased a yamaha emx66 powered mixer and i'd like to do some live recording.i believe with this mixer i have the capability to plug in a cd recorder.i priced checked a few and they are alot more money than i thought they would be!
could someone reccomend a decent unit for a reasonable price or would it be possible to just plug the mixer into my laptop and record to the cd recorder directly with some type of software?

TASCAM CD-RW750 is a great cd recorder for recording live performaces. I have one and 3 or 4 of my friends have them. I have never had any problems as far as indexing and creating multiple tracks I think it is one of the easiest to use.
They run around $550 which is one of the lower price ranged cd-r's

Yes, you can use your laptop and the included sound recording utility (Mac and Windows) to record audio.  From there you can record to CD or convert to MP3.  Be careful, though: if you sell the recording, or even give it away, you're technically violating the license of the karaoke track and the venue's public performance license.  Personally, I don't think it's worth the side money to potentially lose my business to the RIAA.  That said, I would occasionally like to record some singers for my own use and sharing with friends.  No way would I put it on my website though, except maybe as a low-quality video clip when I get a camera for that.

I hate to say this, but a laptop with a good sound card will give you the same result if not better, the new Audigy2 ZS Notebook audio card is the best option so far!  This card comes with some great software like EAX Advance HD, EAX Console...

I had in mind to purchase one of those device and everyone suggested to stick to computers, it's the way to go!

Don't spend your money on any external device if you want my opinion, get yourself a good sound card and you're in business to record your session on your pc!

i was hoping to be able to use my computer,i spent quite alot of time here yesterday reading through most of the archives and i've learned alot.thanks again,looks like computer it is.

To record, the laptop sound would have to have an input jack (and microphone in is not preferred).  With a cable going from 1/8" stereo plug to dual RCA plugs, you would connect to the "booth" or "record" RCA outputs of the mixer.  That should give you everything in the mixdown including microphones.

Recording audio depends on what software you have, but Windows XP comes with a basic sound recorder under Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment.  (It always bugged me that Microsoft changed "Multimedia" to "Entertainment" even though people use Media Player for boring training videos and other serious things.)[/quote]
