Well, maybe you had to be there...
My buddy, (Mr. Anon for now) had a great show Saturday evening, and the rotatiion was 48.
(Before you puke, he can handle it)
A birthday party of 28 comes in, and all hel;l breaks loose.
The guilty party (Female of course) enters the KJ booth, and places 28 sign up slips on top of the rotation, while stirring up the existing ones.
As for me, I would have dialed 911. But no, the rotation was "sorta" fixed, (many complaints) and the evening went forward.
Now... How would you handle this event?
Has it ever happened to you?
Your thoughts?

We write our rotation out so if the slips fall or get mixed up, no problem. As for the offender (1st time), I'd te3ll her if she tried it again none of her party would sing. But then again I'm a nice guy.

Yes, you are a nice guy...
The birthday group didn't get to sing... And the owner didn't kick them out either.
(He likes the money)

Ours are in a clip board so that can't be scattered......and i write them down in case.....plus i put them on a wet board, if we are full, i will write on the wet board.......We are full. No more songs taken at this time. that usually does it. Or i will announce it.

oh Melly! THat's genius!!
I think EVERY kj should have a wet board thinger... then I don't have to sit there and go "jeez.... I wonder how many singers before I get to go up!"
Everyone should think like Melly!

when I'm away from the karaoke equipment, I sometimes carry the slips with me. But for the most part, when it's that busy, I'm not going anywhere!
I have the immediate rotation in the computer, so I'd have SOME idea of who was next, and stuff... would probably have to make an announcement for all singers to come verify their songs with me, though...
it would be a mess. I have people that come up and just toss the slips in front, in back, on the side, on the floor... almost always when my back is turned! !

The KJ booth is actually a small room, complete with "Keep Out" signs.
You know how these gals are...
She thought she could get away with it, 'cause she has B00BS...

I keep my song slips tacked in place on a corkboard. That way a singer can turn in a handful of slips, and I just tack them in the spot with one pushpin. When they sing that song, their whole pile goes to the end of the line.
However, my question is whether or not this was actually a real situation. If so, how long of a show is it! 48 singers is not a ROTATION, it's a LINEUP! At 4 minutes per song (a very fast pace) it's over three hours to get through that rotation once. Most of my shows run at about 4 and a half hours, so I guess if it were me I'd have told this party that I was full up, sorry.

And sometimes that's just the way the ball bounces.

I always keep a seperate piece of paper with my rough rotation on it.
This scenario sounded like a jackpot for the bar. I would have talked to the owner about overtime.

I use a rotation board, it has binder clips attached to it, so it is going to be hard to mess up the rotation.
Jimmy, overtime is not always an option everywhere. There are Liquor laws, basically most bars close at 1am or 2:30 am here, 2:30 being the latest license a bar can obtain; which means at 2:31 you are expected to have the bar empty, or you get a nice big fine

I try to make sure I keep the stack of used slips neat and in order, so if there is any question of where someone fits in the rotation, I can look at the last rotation to see. Anyone who isn't in the last rotation is a new singer, so they don't (at least in their minds) have a set spot in the rotation. Some people still might complain, but most complaints can be settled by explaining what happened, and if you believe the person is in the wrong spot, you can move them.
However, before I can truly answer how I would handle such a situation, I would need the answer to one very important question. ... ... How big were the boobs?

Is that all you guys think about? BOOBS? ha!
Nah, back to the subject at hand...I have a girl like that who comes to ALL the shows...She thinks she's my helper, actually. It gets on my nerves...I'll be away from my booth for one stinkin' second, and she'll just waltz right up to my rig and write down her numbers on my notebook! I finally had to tell her that I was very glad that she was coming out to support me all the time, but just to hand me the slips from now on, so I can keep track myself...
As for signing up for 28 songs with that many other people, I would tell the person, "You MIGHT get in for ONE song, but the way the night is going, it looks like it's all I can do for you."
Another thought: Don't you LOATHE, when there is about a half an hour left in the night, and someone walks in the bar and gives you a slip?
Or what about the "I have to leave" bit? AAAUGH!!!!!

Computerized rotation here - so she'd have to rip my hard drive out of my cold dead hands to pull the same stunt.

when it gets down to the last 30 minutes, i don't take any new slips. Everybody else has been there most of the night supporting me, they got there early so they could sing, TO BAD FOR YOU
