When you're recording and going over and over it trying to make it as good as possible, til finally you reach the point where it sounds about as good as you can make it (your vocals). So ya sub it, then listen to it, and it SOUNDS LIKE DOODOO!!

What is WITH that?? Is uploading it distorting it, or is it like when someone skinny sees an overweight (read by some as: beautiful, curvy, plush, sexy woman) in the mirror??

Is it my perception, or does something change when it goes thru the channels to SS?

HAHAH!

well... I don't think it actually CHANGES mine.... but if I spend all day recording it and listening to a thousand times... and sub it..

an hour or so later, I listen back and go "HOLY CRAP! that whole phrase was flat!"

I don't think it's the SS (in MY case) i think it's just perception..

HOWEVER... sometimes the high loud notes seem to be a little more distorted than on my computer... but that hasn't happened in AGES..

so i dunno.. I'm just babbling... pay no attention! HAHA!

must be esp cause I waz just on my way over here to ask this very question. A  little diff though. I'll do a song and listen to it over and over then the next day listen and say "ugh" or something to that effect. A day or two later listen to the same thing and say "well that's ready to sub". You know, stuff sounds diff one day to the next it seems. Must be mood or maybe hearing is on the way out...

Yep, it is perception, or mood, or who knows. Cuz it does sound different at times! It's like when I draw or paint - it always looks better to me months later.

It's that subjective thing that is different inside all of us that makes some of us rate some subs higher and some lower.

I always thought I was nuts (wait, I am.... regardless.....) But, whenever I submit a song here, i SWEAR that the vocals ALWAYS sound much louder than they do, when I listen before I uploaded it... it always sounds the tiniest bit.. "off". DRIVES ME NUTS!!! It isn't just me though, the hubby agrees, and HE isn't nuts:)

BUT, on the other count, Lol, i often post songs, listen a couple days later, and go.. WOAH! Why did i POST that! And then, immediatly delete the offending submission:)... and, occasionally have wiped all evidence of ever having recorded it off of my computer:) However, I have listened to things i used to hate, and found that I actually liked them, later on.

Ah, well, we are ALL nuts.

OMG!  It's so good to know that the I-think-my-song-sucked-the-day-after phenomenon doesn't only happen to me!!   :hi5: I can't tell you how many times I've recorded a song and sent it to someone I know and then listened to it the day after and cringed.

It's good to take some time off and listen to it again later.

It's definitely happened to me several times... I'm still smarting from my sub of "Rain" today. When I finished it this afternoon I was beaming, thinking I had my first non-a capella 10 rating on my hands for sure... only to find it sitting at a 9.0 once the rating finally showed up! So I listened to it on my husband's speakers and it sounds nothing like what I heard on  my headphones and my computer speakers... Dang all these different sound systems!

What is wrong with a 9? In MY opinion... a ten should be damn near impossible to achieve.. how can you achieve perfection? in ENOUGH people's minds, that they ALL select a 10?.. Just not possible. How are you unhappy with a 9?  Regardless of how ANYTHING sounds, on other peoples systems, I would HOPE that a true "10", sounds just as good on EVERY system....not only that, but, it is all a matter of opinion. what is a 10 to someone, is a 7 to me, most of the time. Which, is why I don't rank people (because, they would get upset.. over.. a "low" rank.. 5 is AVERAGE!!! What is wrong with AVERAGE!?! Ok, ranting..  Blah blah freaking blah. RANKS means NOTHING! now, looking... you then TOOK down the song!? HUH?!

Don't get me wrong... on any of my other songs, a 9 would have been fine... but in my headphones, etc, that one sounded better than anything else I'd recorded. A capella stuff aside, I was more proud of that particular mix job/sound than any other song I'd done, and it got a lower rating than anything else I'd submitted - even stuff I didn't think was nearly as good. That's the only reason I was surprised. I thought it *was* a perfect performance, and I haven't thought that about anything I've submitted yet.

On my husband's speakers, my voice sounded thinner than it seemed on mine, which is I guess why it was ranked lower...? Maybe?

Anyway, I did take it down, not because of the rating alone, but because I really like that song, and I'm determined to have the best possible version up there that I can. So this morning I went through and slightly strengthened the intros on all the choruses, brought up the volume slightly on a few of the ultra-low notes, and smoothed out a few vocal attacks and pitch problems. I'll probably listen to it again in a day or two and make sure there isn't anything else I can fix before re-subbing it again.

(And actually, I'd come back to this thread this morning to delete my post hoping no one had replied yet, because you're right... regardless of the song, it's silly to complain about a 9. I won't do it any more.)  :)

I can't remember ever submitting a song I thought was worthy. Most Times I recorded many times, and just gave up and submitted anyhow. When I do My show, or sing karaoke, I am told it really sounds good. But I am continually adjusting the Mixer to make it sound like I want it to.

When I record tho, I have the audio separate, then mix down, and I really don't like the vocals. I just can't get it to sound the same as live. I realize anyone is their own worst critic, But you guys sound Great for the most part. Maybe with a bunch more practice I can make it .....

If there's one thing karaoke has taught me, it's that YOUR perception about a song is going to usually be entirely different from what the audience thinks.  There are so many variables about how people will judge you, your singing, the song, etc. it just does no good to even worry about it.  All you can do is what YOU like and hope for the best...that's true in live karaoke and it's true here, too.  We would all love to get 10's but...it will just make you frustrated if you worry about the rankings or what comments people make.

What I've found is that your song will sound different on every differnt stereo or sound system you play it on and that goes for the showcase too. It will sound diffrent on the puter or a home stereo or anything other than what it was recorded on. Also the sub may be sounding diffrent becuase you have to submit it at such a lower data size(3meg) which may be causeing it to lose sound quality and making it sound "GRAINY" so to speak. Sort of like the difference between a very LOW RES JPG photo and a very hi-res jpg digital photo. Low makes them fuzsy and grainy as opposed to clear and crisp--which may introduce distortion to the sound. And at low rate--you LOSE much more sound components. At least thats my theory.

Well I've confirmed that it IS all individual perception. Cuz I listened to some of mine from a couple months ago and I like some better and I like some worse. It's just a really personal filter-y thing depending on so many things.

I have wondered this same thing for quite some time now! I have even commented to some that after uploading into SS that my vocals sound different than before I subbed the tune! lol I was told that was not possible however I would think that in making my file smaller so it would fit for me to sub, I would think that it is highly possible to loose some, not all, maybe not even very noticeable change, but some change that might actually be detectable.  I ususally listen before I sub a song and then after I have subbed it. I often find that my vocals are a little louder than they were before I subbed the tune.  It is as though the quality of the backing track seems to suffer some volume loss.  I have also noticed upon occassion that my effects seemed changed.  For example, on one of my songs, after subbing the tune, I noticed that it appered to have a little more reverb than I would have knowingly added to my vocals. I went back to listen to my original before subbing and it seemed to have less reverb. I went back to SS and listened to my sub and there it was again. lol I am not sure, but I dont think I am that far gone! However my wranglers tend to get a little tight as does my hat band sometimes! lol  Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
Mike

So I'm not alone?  LOL
Been many times I finished a recording and thought...."Okay..I got it"... only to listen the next day and decide to redo it before subbing it.
Plus stuff that I don't think is that good has gone over better than the stuff I thought was.  So now after a few tries at the recording.......I throw it up and hope for the best!
So glad I'm among friends here!  LOL
