Hi there!

What is a nice way to inform an owner that I am raising my price?  I've been trying to get the nerve but don't know how to approach him, probably because I'm afraid of him telling me to take a hike and finding another KJ...They are making a LOT of money on my nights; I have had 30+ singers every Wednesday.

HELP!!

show him the discs you want to buy..... the speakers you want to get or have gotten recently, microphones, etc.

I basically did that and my venue owner realized how much I was spending... got an extra $25 a night!

I know they have the money...The two nights I am there, the bartender makes more than I do at the end of the night!  Where I'm from, the going rate is $150 - $200...I want $200...I have developed quite a following in the past 6 months, and you are right - it IS expensive getting all those discs and keeping up with the books and equipment!  I just feel like it's time.  But I'm too soft-hearted, ya know?

How much of a raise are you looking for?  Is it $25 ? or are you looking to double your price?.   One way is to call a meeting and sit down with the owner and ask them to evaluate your performance.  If you're doing a good job they will tell you that and how happy they are ... Now you got them where you want them .
Explain to them as business owners the cost of doing business is up ( GAS alone!) not to mention the discs, the equipment etc etc.   If you're working a little OT every night for free like many KJ's do...Let the owner now that too.  Be confident and you must be willing to WALK if you don't get your price.  At least you should be able to get HALF of what you expect .. sometimes meeting halfway isn't that bad .
Good Luck !

I'd set up some sort of a review with the owner just like you were an employee.  They can evaluate your performance and discuss any issues that have arisen.  I'd be sure to track ALL of your expenses for the venue and to show them how much you spend to insure you offer a good show.

But be careful.  It's easy to price yourself out of business if you're not careful.

I would also make sure these 30 singers had your business card.  They like what you do, so If the owner doesn't understand that a little more to you means a lot more to him/her- it will be easier for these 30 singers to help you at your next place.  Oh, and Good Work!!!
