you need to save the .mp3 as a smaller sized (kbps) file. If you don't know how to do it with Cool Edit Pro, download freeware program GOLDWAVE from goldwave.com.

The average mp3 is saved as 128kbps... appears to be an unspoken standard. Many people chose a higher setting for less degredation... 196kbps.

What you need to do, is what I've done since I was a member. resave the file (different name so you don't corrupt the first one) at a MONO setting, and at 80 or 90kbps...

this will take a 4-5mb file and save it to a 3mb or less.

With goldwave, when you first open it, click on the a"File" and "Batch conversion". Change the Destination settings to the lower settings. Mine currently states "Level 3, 44100Hz, mono, 96kbps" after you save it to a new destination (I create a folder on my c drive), I go in and look at the properties! if it's under 3mb, you're cool as an unpaid member.

Refer to the sizes you can do it as on the Singer's Showcase FAQ.

Have fun

knightshow, are you sure mono is the right option? The word scares the heck out of me! lol I never had to save as mono myself to reach below 3MB. The "worst" quality I've had to use so far has been 44100Hz and 96kbps stereo.

Cheers,
jee

mono believe it or not is just fine, for songs on the showcase... for a pro song, I'd never do that. but then, for a pro song, 3mb wouldn't be the issue.

And I've had to go as low as 80kbps before! LOL!

You can do it in Cool Edit. When you go to your 'save as' menu... click 'options'... I save it as a mp3pro... you can adjust the size there on a slide menu....  70-(80-110 Kbps)  is high quality.. depending on the file size to begin with... you can always go back and reduce it more.

Thank ya m'dear... I knew you could do it with Cool Edit, but I don't have a lot of experience with that program!

Is this part of the "techie" questions?? If not, it should be moved there!

Good job Sher!

What a nice hot topic ...

I would just like to say that this is a very opinionated subject ... mono vs stereo. Indeed, a mono version will be almost HALF the size of a stereo version. Knight's statement that "mono" is OK for SS may indeed be true, although this may be yet another "hot" topic of discussion. The music is still there, although not quite as "pleasing" to the descriminate ear. I must admit that his assessment of the situation is probably correct since we are so concerned about the file size limitations. I must note here that we all must sacrifice the "quality" of our sound in order to fit our files into the "restricted" availability of bandwidth. Therefore he correctly asserts that a "mono" mix is sufficient, and more suited to the restricted environment to which we are subjected in SS.

However, Jee is also correct in his assessment of your delema. He has never had to submit a "mono" version of his songs to SS. Neither have I become compelled to submit a "mono" version of my work to SS. The key to this situation is the "file size" of the submission. Jee and I decide to choose to compress our files and preserve the "stereo" effect in the playback. Knight is simply stating that everyone has the option to decrease the file size by submitting a "mono" version of the song. And you know what, some people would prefer a "mono" version that is not compressed over the "stereo" version that is compressed. And believe me, compression has a pronounced negative effect on the overall sound.

I can certainly respect Knights solution to the problem, as well as I can respect Jee's solution also. This is where you need to become discriminating. And you must become educated. If you educate yourself in the topic in question, then you will no doubt be able to make the correct decision for you. It may not be the decision someone else would make ... but it will then be your own educated decision.

be warned!
