Just a short poll - KJ's what is the age range of your "regulars" ?  These are the singers who love to sing OUT every week.  Are they young and want the NEW hits ?  Are they middle aged and love the older stuff or are they older and love to sing the standards from any cdg starter package?

Singers do you go out and sing weekly or as much as you can ? What is your age ?  I'm looking to see if karaoke is evolving in anway from an AGE perspective.

I go out every wed night to sing Im 46 and sing mostly Standards and 70's

When I host a show it's mostly Country and the age group is 30 and older.

When I perform My Character show the age group is also 30 and older.

I live in a college town  however I hang out in places that cater to people in and around my age group....I cant be trusted around college girls

We go out and sing once a week and would do more if it were available.  We try to accomodate the other singers/dancers and sing what would be appropriate for everyone.  
When we started going to our 'local' karaoke place, it was mostly people who preferred the older country...recently it has been full of a younger crowd that prefers newer country but mostly Pop or Rock.  So we have had to accomodate that group so in other words.... we have had to come out of our box!  Thanks to 'Genre of the week' we were somewhat prepared.

I have one group of regulars that are 3 generations (mother, 2 daughters, and grandaughter)  It's their weekly night out together.

Everyone else is an extreme mix between the ages of 25 and 90.  It seems like early-90's country has the most staying power of all types of music, at least in my area.

Our crowd is probably primarily between 25-40.  Not saying we don't have our share of the other groups, just not as many.

I gotta say me and my wife are normally the youngest people at our shows.  Every once in a while when we play heavier music we can draw a younger crowd but for the most part its 30 and up.

I go out once a week if possible. I'm 32, and I sing mostly pop (Liz Phair, Michelle Brach, Jewel) and angry girl music (Alanis Morissette, Evanescence).

The crowd seems to like my singing okay, but I wonder sometimes I'm singing the wrong stuff for the crowd (everybody else tends to stay centered around country music). To avoid alienating the country folks, I've started trying to add in some closer-to-country stuff, like Fleetwood Mac and the Dixie Chicks.

i go out about five times a week,and because of my age (im sixty)people think i should be singing dean martin,perry como and ol blue eyes.they are amazes when i do the newer stuff....stereophonics,coldplay,oasis and travis.

the place I go to has mostly college age..... I HATE IT!! UHGH! it USED to be 30-40 somethings... there was such a wide range of music being sung... now with all these younger ppl all they sing is Mariah Carey and Eminem! sounds funny, cuz I'M college age, but I can't stand them all! ! They're always so inconsiderate of other singers, yet expect all kinds of accolade when they sing (most of 'em CAN'T sing)

ok.... there's my rant for the day! !

time to find a new karaoke bar? i think so..

I'm 31 and try to find places that do karaoke. I think it really depends on the city or area you are in. College towns may be a little younger crowd as well as more rural areas. At least it's that way here in MN. Most of the karaoke in the suburbs is 30's-50 year olds.

Being in Texas, it's tough finding places where country isn't the mainstay. I never know whether I'm better off sticking with what everybody else is singing, or intentionally avoiding country just so everyone listening doesn't hear country every song...

I've only found one place that I like that I go karaoke every other weekend( babysitter permiting ) Depends on the season, depends the age range. This is out in South Padre Island,Texas. So between the months of September thru early March its the older crowd,50yrs and up. Mostly retirees on their vacation from the cold weather. We call them "Winter Texans" they come from all over the country.Then Spring Breakers and the rich mexicans come in for their spring break. The age then changes to 18-26. After that, the age varies especially since its at a hotel restuarant.I take my kids with me sometimes,unless I need a break from them . They sing as well and they love it !!!! I sing songs according to the age group and what they are mostly singing. I like all kinds of music,so it all suits me just fine.

Our Thursday night crowd consists of ages 21-88, the majority of the songs that are sung are Country, with Classic Rock next on the list and once in awhile some of the newer Headbanging stuff. Everyone seems to respect what the others are singing and the lady who is 88 even gets out on the Dance floor and Shakes it once in a while to some AC/DC.
On Sundays it is Family Karaoke and of course we see all age groups, I love to watch the younger ones Perform, after all they are future customers. We have one person complain that the Children were getting to sing too much  (the mix was 3 adults to one child so that wasn't so) I explained that this was the only time they could come out and do Karaoke and if she wanted to sing without competing with the kids to come on Thursday Night as it was 21 and older.

Hi KJ, well I'm 51 but don't tell anybody because I like to tell people I'm 61 - that way they always say "Oh my GOSH  :O  you look SO GOOD! I figured you were in your early late 30s or 40s!" But seriously, I find that the predominant age groups seem to be very location and club-genre related. I usually go out singing on Wednesdays and Fridays and sometimes Saturdays if I can't get out one of the other two nights. One club very definitely attracts the 40 to 55 year old singers with just a smattering of the 25 to 39 age bracket. Another club that used to go to until they just closed down (their leased was doubled) leaned toward the younger set (20 to 30). The new place on the other side of lake that's taken over the karaoke in that general neighborhood attracts more of the 35 to 55 age singers with only a few under that age.  We're all really accepting of eachother's choice of songs whether they're new or old but I have definitely noticed that the younger crowd, while they won't sing the older songs, really seem to very enthusiastically "get into" the songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s when they're sung by the older crowd.  The younger males seem to go more into singing the rap stuff and the younger females seem to do more country for some reason. But everybody has a great time and we're all very supportive of one another because we know that music is such a personal thing and so for the individual to feel comfortable enough to get up in front of a crowd and share something so personal is a very special experience. There are people who appear to be completely "tone deaf" and can't even seem to carry the simplest tune but we're still supportive of them for that same reason and also because when you think about it's the "weak singers" who probably do more to encourage others in that club setting then the "strong singers."  A person on the verge of singing for the first time may be intimidated by hearing a strong singer and feel like "oh, I could never do that well, I'd just embarrass myself and my friends" but when they hear a real "weak singer" that same person will think "Hey, I'll bet I can do better then them - I certainly can't do any worse!" Then they'll give it a try and sometimes a new "karaoke  :dancin:  star" is born!

Here in this college town it depends on the venue.  I started checking out the local karaoke shows about two months ago and still haven't been to all of them.  There are at least two places near or on the University of Illinois campus that have karaoke but I haven't been to them yet because the times/nights haven't been good for my schedule.  I would assume that they mostly get people of college age.

Of the other places I've been to, the crowds are mostly people in their thirties and forties, with a few younger people thrown in.  One place had a higher percentage of people in their twenties, and another (American Legion hall) was mostly older people in their forties, fifties, and sixties.  I don't intend to go back to the American Legion because the smoke was so thick I could barely breathe and my mouth went dry halfway through my song, but it was interesting that the crowd was more into the karaoke than any other place I've been to.  People were dancing and applauding for every singer.  Some of the other places, one or two people bother to applaud and that's it.

I feel pretty fortunate, actually, that for a mid-size town (About 100,000 between Champaign and Urbana) there's at least one karaoke show somewhere six nights a week.  If I wanted to drive, I could probably find a show in another town within a half-hour's drive for the other night.

The local bar I play at every Wednesday and Friday, has a very wide variety of both ages and genre preferences.  There are young groups who like the new pop/rap/dance type stuff, but they branch out to other stuff like country.

Then there is ALWAYS the older country crowd that is true to their music.  The older Hank, Johnny, etc.  They don't stray out of that comfort zone very often.

Last is the middle aged group (I believe I fit into that group).  It seems to me this group has a wider variety of music tastes.  From the good old R&R (Lynyrd Skynyrd type), the metal years (Motley and G-n-R), 70's & 80's pop (ABBA, Blondie) up to the current pop and country hits.

The place I play is real laid back and comfortable, and has a dance floor right in front of the karaoke stage, so it's fun for both singers and dancers in a group.
