Hi folks!
I've been pricing Plextor CDRW Externals for my laptop, so that I can start ripping my Karaoke CD collection and eventually run the show from the laptop's external hard drive. But it seems to me that it would be less expensive to buy an internal drive and put it inside one of those USB external cases.
Has anybody done this?
Does it work well?
Is there any special USB case that is necessary?
Can a dummy do it?
Thanks!

it's two internal connections, the same as it is inside the pc. One the power plug, the other the ide cable that connects to the drive. on the 5 1/4" that houses the cdrom, there's also the audio cable if you want to use it for that.
My roomie even hooked up his cdrom on the 3.5" usb case... wasn't PRETTY, but it hooked up the same! He just sat it up on the drive bay!
Your system will recognize the drive just like a standard one... but it will see it in the USB section. But if you pull up a windows explorer screen, you'll see NO difference!
This is how I have my show machine hooked up... no cdrom drive at all!

They work good and I have done shows with the music on the usb drive.. There are a few precautions for hard drives.
Make sure the one you get has a fan in it.
Dont have the external drive powered unless you have the usb plugged in and it is active.
You can plug it in hot but it is a good idea to disable or park it with the little icon by the clock before unplugging the usb..
I did have an 80 gig go bad on it but I think the hard drive had many hours on it to start with...
