When was the first Karaoke performance you did and what song did you sing?
-------------------------------------------
Mine was the Eagle's Peaceful Easy Feeling in a singing contest in 1990, the backtrack was on a tape and I had to memorize the lyrics. I came in 5th out of 17 singers. I think I still have the tape...

I was in a tree house and I was truly in love and...... ohhh...
Ummm... much later... after the tree house.... I was at a party with a bunch of friends. We were slightly .... ok.... we were drinking tequila! :drunk: The owner of the house had karaoke set up in the garage. We were all fighting over the mic! I grabbed it and did a Tina Turner song.... (Better Be Good To Me) man that was fun! Everyone was dancin'... I was hooked! :dancin:
I rarely perform live anymore... I kinda miss the rush!

It was about 4 years ago when a my wife and myself went with some friend who went to karaoke quite a bit. I sat there watching the singers sing and looking in the music book while getting some liquid courage ( Long Island Ice Tea X 3). Then decided to do Devil went down to Georgia. I coundn't mess it up to bad.... LOL Song started, missed cue, couldn't keep up & walked away about half way thru. Now I run my own show and having a blast.

you actually had me fooled with that title!
I thought I was jaded to these thread titles! !! ok.. ok...
When I popped my "karaoke cherry"
First time EVER:
I was about 12 or 13... my friend's first job's christmas party. I sang "Must Have Been Love" by Roxette and then we BOTH sang "If I only Had a Brain" from The Wizard of Oz... it was so unbelievably horrible.... My version of "must have been love" was COMPLETELY falsetto!! that's how I thought you're SUPPOSED to sing! !!
First time at a karaoke bar:
I was 18... I went with a buncha my big brother's friends and cousins that I grew up with. Most of them were much older, cuz I was friends with their little siblings n stuff... So I was kinda the "tag-a-long" that they didn't really want to come....at a bar called "Freddy's" and I sang "Blue" by LeAnn Rimes and surprised my table (they never knew I ever was into singing) and they freaked out... started hootin' n hollerin..... clapping... whistling.... the rest of the bar had some good applause too.... if THAT don't hook ya, I dunno WHAT will!

I don't remember exactly when I stopped being a Cherryoke, but it was approximately 9 years ago. My first song was either "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum or "Fire and Rain" by J.T. I know I did both of those songs that night, but I don't remember which I did first. Been hooked ever since.

It was the summer of 1990. Did Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues. The time was 1:45 AM, they were getting ready to close & asked if I wanted to sing. I had just enough Tequila Poppers & said , "Ok, SHURE".

Well, as usual, Partial-Heimers has kicked in, but I think it was "On The Road Again" and it was after work in the watering hole in the same building. (Brass Monkey)
That song is pretty short, and I was pretty drunk.. LOL

About 40 years ago whilst serving aboard the Little Rock we were doin a beach party for the prime minister of Greece. We had a small band called the little rockers which I wasnt a member but sang with a few times. Formalities were tight and you couldnt cut the tensions with a 2 bladed broad sword... Nobody dared to relax and have fun.. The band was playin every thing under the sun to no avail.. All of a sudden they were calling me to do dayo. Im standing there thinkin aint no way ur gonna get me up there.. The gunnery officer said get up there snuff. I walked up on the little stage and with all the courage I could muster got completely out of uniform took off my hat, jumper and t-shirt. The bongos started and i started beltin out dayo.. All of a sudden all the Greek brass got grins on their faces, loosened their ties and started whoopin and hollering.. Everybody got an appetite and started eating, drinking and having fun. I think that was when I lost it because I found out what a charge it is to turn on a crowd.
Then about 10 or 15 years ago I was doin dart leauges and they were havin karaoke. This cute little gal walked up and asked me do you sing I said hell yea She said ok Awhile later she was calling me up and asked what I wanted to sing With knees knockin and not knowing what to do I started singin Tex Ritters Blood On The Saddle (no music of course ) her mouth dropped along with everybody else except for a couple of old timers who fell off their bar stools and were laughing so hard they were crying.. Then I lost it too and couldnt sing any more the next rotaion I turned in Your Cheatin Heart and been hoooked ever since...
If I do without it for a week or two Im a virgin all over again but thats a different thread....

Well for me it went down this way, I have for the longest been recording and listened to my wife sing songs and one day I asked her to sing a Allison Krauss song for me and she said "no way that song is way to high for me" and I was like "no way even I can sing in her range as a guy" so I sang it infront of her and she joined in with me singing it. Then she said "ok now you can sing this with me as a duet at karaoke" and that was that. I went to a karaoke bar and she dragged me up on the stage and I was so nervous I could barely hold the mic. The next time it was much easier.

I was always in choir/band all through junior high and high school and would NEVER sing solos (although I really wanted to.) I was always too shy and nervous to sing in front of anyone... including close friends and family. But it became a personal vendetta to myself that someday I would get over that and be able to sing publicly.
I went to Six Flags one summer with my parents when I was 16. They had this little recording studio thing where you could pay $10 to sing in this little room with a sliding glass door and a mic, one-take, and then you get a cassette tape of your song afterward. I sang 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline and shocked my parents. They didn't know I really liked to sing. After that, they bought me my own karaoke machine (the kind with a cheesy mic, cassette tapes and NO on-screen lyrics.) I sang on that thing all the time, but in privacy. My parents took that blasted tape I made at Six Flags to a family reunion. One of my older cousins heard it, stole it from me, and proceeded to play it for our entire family (and there's a LOT of us.) I was mortified. That was in 1990.
In the summer of 1999, I started dating this guy who was really good friends with these two KJ's who worked at the bar we frequented. He was a really good singer and tried to get me to sing karaoke, but I just wouldn't do it (even though I REALLY wanted to). The KJ's got a new gig at this restaurant/bar and asked him to come out and bring others for support. We went, and 4 or 5 very large beers later, one of the 17 year old waitresses came over to me and asked me if I knew the song 'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia. Apparently, she and the other waitresses were going to sing it, but they backed out on her. I don't know why she picked me of all people, but thinking back on it now, I am glad she did. We sang it together... and it was HORRENDOUS. But at least I got up there. After that, I would only sing if someone else was singing with me, and only if I was really drunk.
In 2000, I was at another bar with a friend. I decided that I was going to sing by myself. I picked 'Who Will Save Your Soul' by Jewel. Surprised a lot of people. I was drunk, and that's a fast song to keep up with in that state. I moved to Michigan that same year, and didn't sing karaoke again until 2001. I came back here for 3 months and sang as much as I could (but always really drunk.) Went back to Michigan and didn't sing karaoke again for another 2 years. I moved back here for good the latter end of 2003 and went to karaoke every weekend. I was still very shy and nervous at just the thought of singing back then.
It took me approximately 4-5 months of singing regularly on the weekends to get over the nerves completely. I also realized I sounded like crap while singing drunk, so I started putting my songs in early and I won't sing anymore if I've had too much. I've entered a few karaoke contests since then, even winning several times with those same two songs I sang in the very beginning (although I did start throwing other songs in there as well.) Now... people are surprised to learn that I was EVER nervous or shy about singing. And no one ever knows what songs to expect to hear from me. I try a lot of things you don't hear that often (if ever.)
Blah, blah... I have Gilly syndrome today, and I'm babbling

Sang it myself a couple weeks ago... the crowd went nuts!
I lost my cherry on Elton John's "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", and followed it up later that night with "Candle In The Wind".
Was nervous as hell, just stared at the screen.
Nowadays it's not so bad. I still just stare at the screen, though!

Had me fooled 4 a few minutes there.
My mom and dad bought me a little karaoke machine at age 2. I put sand in it.
But my first real karaoke performance was at a karaoke contest at he park, I was 8 and I sang Blue. I won a free session at a hair saloon. i was 8 had very long hair and of course my mom wasn't about to let them fool with it. So I still have my little card for it.

I was fooled by the question too! Let's see! I started playing guitar when I was 12 and singing about that time too. I had a friend who sang with his dad's country band and he put on a school assembly for us one day and sang serverl country tunes. I was sure I could do that too. That is when I started playing and singing around the house. We would have family jam sessions a couple of nights a week. When I hit high school I formed my own band and we did a school assembly for the whole school one day and stayed busy from then on playing dances, birthdays, weddings, etc.
My first exprience with karaoke came unexpectedly. It was in 1999 shortly after my divorce. I had taken my daughter (age 9 at the time) to the mall. I had a buddy of mine from high school and his daughter along with me who was going through a divorce too. My daughter and his daughter who was quite a bit older had walked around a corner in the mall while my friend and I had stopped to visit with another person we had met up with while walking through the mall. Suddenly my buddy's daughter came around the corner and told me I needed to come quick. My daughter was singing on a stage out in the middle of the mall. I could not believe it! She had never done anything like that before. We walked quickly around the corner and sure enough, there she was and a crowd of about 80 or so people watching her sing. I stood there and made faces at her trying to get her to laugh. When she finished singing, the lady running the show said "Dad, you cant get away with that! You have to come sing a song now that your daughter has." She got the crowd behind her to urge me to get on stage. I had never even heard of karaoke. I went up thinking, gee if words come up on a screen how can I go wrong. They quickly found me a George Strait tune "Right or Wrong." I sang it and the crowd went nuts and grew larger. They would not let me off the stage until I had sang 5 or 6 songs in a row. Then I knew I was hooked on singing with these tracks. I started coming to the mall when I was not singing with my old band, and before long, I was helping the lady run the shows. Not long after that, I met up with some guys who were professional musicians, most retired studio musicians. Nearly all of them have worked with stars in Nashville at one time or another. They offered to play for me. I formed a new band and hit the studios. Now I have 2 cd's out, I get radio air play. Play huge venues of 2 to 3, 000 people at least twice a month, and still when I get the chance, I help my friend do the karaoke shows in the mall. I also play in the mall doing my own shows either with my band or if they are not available to play for one reason or another, I use cdg's to sing! It looks like music will always be a part of my life and I am really happy for that! --Mike
