Suzanne,

"best" was referring to getting the best recording :) Whether the best recording is the best for you only you knows ;)

BTW. you can buy a little mixer for ~$50 and multi track software aint that hard to use. I don't think that is a lot to spend on a hobby???

Cheers,

Morten

We Want/Need a 'mixer'... but we're a bit leery of them, especially the cheaper ones.

We've discovered that plugging good equipment into a 'cheap' mixer (heck, even some of the (supposedly) better ones) can really lower your sound quality. :(

We need to find a mixer that gives a good sound at a decent price. :p

I have a USB pre-amp/mixer that plus into the PC and bypasses the sound card alltogether.  It keeps the signal digital at all times and eliminates most of the noise and hissing.

For those interested it is an "M-Audio Mobile-Pre" and I got it at Sam Ash for $149

http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem. ... odaythanks

It's a good unit, and can be used with your PC or with a laptop because of it's size.

How do these USB adaptor/mixer devices work ?  How does the device Jason posted differ from Audigy that I've heard about feature-wise, etc ?

What are the Pro's and Con's of these devices.  I know nothing about running a device directly into a computer.

Soundchick,

running a low impedance mic into the unbalanced input of a consumer grade soundcard and then cranking the gain to amplify the low signal results in a lot of noise etc. I find it hard to believe that even a fairly cheap mixer where you run the mic into a balanced mic pre-amp and then into a line level input of your sound card won't be much better.

As long as the mixer has an XLR input with a balanced mic pre-amp and preferably a direct out I think it should work better than the alternative. Another option of course is to use an external pro-audio sound card with xlr input and a balanced mic pre-amp built in.

My Carvin mixer (C1644) works very well. Any issues with my recordings are due to my voice not the method...

I record using a mixer with XLR Mic connection which connects to line In of the audio card.
First, calibrate the levels on the mixer to the 0db mark (peak +2db) than, adjust the line in level on the windows level control to the 0db or 60% mark. The record level again should be adjusted to the 0db or 50%.

There is no other way to calibrate your levels, if you hear a hum it's a bad connection that is possibly due to poor cable quality.

I use an Alesis X2 mixer, Alesis LX multitrack recorders, outboard processing & mix it all down to an Alesis Masterlink.  No computers.

I need to check Ebay.  Maybe someone has a life there.  The cheap one I've had since childhood is starting to get rough around the edges.

It was probably a Soundblaster Audigy 2

(that's the version we have - the newer ones look a bit different, not as many plug-in spots on the faceplace)
