OK, I know it's easy to say, "just for fun" and "wants critique" are clear-cut boundaries.  Usually I say only nice things about subs that says JFF, or I don't say anything if it's really bad.  Then I am honest for the critiquing ones but of course still try to say something nice.

So if someone says JFF all the time, and he is usually pretty good, but then he subs something where, he is really off (like, he is singing the harmony instead of the melody), do you tell him, or would that be mean because he didn't ask for critique?

Or maybe you have a singer who always sounds pretty. buit you know she could do better if only she would change one or two things, do you tell her?  Even if she says JFF?

These are the things that I found frustrating.  Are these people saying JFF because they have weak egos and they just don't want to know, or because they are morally opposed to critiquing or ranking, or maybe they just are not interested in improvement...I never know.

Or say you have someone who always asks for criticism, but they are really awful or have one big problem...they always have the same problems even though you keep telling them.  Do you just give up or keep repeating yourself?  I feel mean if I keep pounding on 'em.

Do you guys think about these things or am I the only obsessive one?

I personally only sub in JFF if its a song that I really haven't worked on, but I am not opposed to a few comments in the negative sense even when I sub in JFF... I just don't want people to overanalyse it and point out every single thing wrong...

It does frustrate me though how some people are really good, and you just have one thing you want to point out which is a consistent "problem", but you feel you can't because all their subs are JFF...

BUT - that is their prerogative and thats cool with me...

But yeah - I do see what you're saying Suzanne...

Yea Suzanne, I've been thinking about it so you're not the only one There's a slight difference in my feedback for those categories. For C songs, ya all know how I give feedback. For JFF songs it's a bit different. I evaluate each situation separately and sometimes decide to pick on those things or two that you mentioned and sometimes not. It depends how I feel about the need to do that in each case. I don't want to go into depths with this but as a rule I can say that on JFF songs, better singers get critique easier from me than the singers I don't think are that good. So, sometimes I critique JFF songs too, although rarely as thoroughly as C songs.

Some people have been saying that they sub to J category because of the snipers. I assume they still want feedback although they don't want to know what their rank would be in the end. That's what I try to keep in mind, too!

I would think that if you feel you can offer someone constructive feedback to help them out, but they are subbing JFF, it would be appropriate to say something like "I have some suggestions for you, PM me if you are interested" or something to that effect. Or just PM them and ask if they want to know.

I, btw, am always open to feedback.. even if I sub JFF. As Brett said, if I sub JFF it usually means I haven't worked very hard on the song, and I know it... but in that case, just send me feedback via PM.

ASK them!!! Ask them if they WANT any constructive criticism.

You're not seeing the forest for the trees, Suzanne. There are people, good singers, that sub in the Just for Fun category cause they merely DON'T WANT CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM!!!!

A simple read thru the past threads will tell you that there are several of these singers that frequent this bboard.

I know your motives are pure, but there have been hurt feelings due to a critique.

I personally sub in the just for fun area, cause I hate the ratings, and the way people obsess over them.

that's always fine with me... don't like #'s cuz no idea what you are comparing that # to... my other songs? someone else's songs? the original? etc.. so #'s wont' happen for me

Not necessarily mean, but likely an opinion where one isn't wanted.  Kind've like walking into a room with alot of people, and someone says  "kaplan, you've gotten fat" when it's obvious I don't want this to be a focal point because I've drawn vertical stripes on my pants in magic marker...

Thanks, looks like I got ten different opinions, !! I like Matt's and Syberchick's the best, I will ask. I haven't actually critiqued anyone who didn't ask for it, just to be on the safe side.

Steve, I would never say "you suck" which I think is the equivalent of saying "you're fat".  But I get your drift!

There's really no way to know, without knowing the person regarding their boundaries, and what they might or might not consider impinging.  I have done what Matt suggested twice,  and both times the people said  "I am quite capable of hearing myself,  if I wanted criticism I'd have submitted in that section".  A few have told me in private that I am welcome to critique them anytime.

Considering that so many that post in "C" have a difficult time handling criticism.  I think it's always safest to assume "J" submissions mean "neutral" or "Praise" welcomed only.


IE...   The performer likes to see, and interact with the audience,  yet like a live concert, unless the performer asks for your opinion on how they did, to offer such an opinion might be met with resentment. EVEN when they ask, some people would rather have you lie.....    Just the way things are.....

Which is why the "white lie" is so popular.

Maybe instead of a box asking for criticism, we should have a box for honest criticism and one for "positive comments only"...I don't know why anyone would ask for criticism if they don't want it...just me, I guess!  I can see getting more negative comments than you expected, sure, but if you ask for it, you can't really complain...I can't say I am always thrilled if someone points out flaws, but I know that I did ask for it.  I guess we all want to have our cake and eat it, too.  We want to ask for criticism but have everyone tell us it's perfect!  :)

For some reason, my relatives seem to have no inhibition about saying things like "wow, you've gained weight!" or "my, you're bigger than you used to be!" (as if it were a topic of general discussion).



If someone tells you that you've 'gained weight' (when it obviously hasn't been a goal of yours), is it then appropriate to respond with something like "And you're really starting to show your age!!"...???

If we keep adding boxes and radio buttons for this and that, soon, leaving a comment for a song is gonna be like filling out an election ballot.  This is insane guys and gals!  It's way too complicated and just not worth this kind of effort!  Just go ahead and sing and let people say what they want....
