Hi Guys,
I just wondered how many members out there use a Key Controller !!!
Quite a few songs cannot be sung if it happens to be in the wrong key for you, so if you have a key controller which changes the song key up or down you are able to sing it. I started of with an 8 key controller (Denonet) 4 down and 4 up but its limited, I then changed to a (Fintec 904) 14 keys that's 7 down and 7 up. This DVD player can also play CD+G as well as DVD VCD and MP3. Now I am upgrading to a RJtech RJ-4200 which also has the same and more.
It would be interesting to know what other members are using to change key when they sing a song. I know that if you sing with a midi song file its no problem as the PC program has a key changer, I'm talking about non-midi songs. Cheers, Peter

ahh ive used on adobe a few times the pitch stretch its not that sucessful and sometimes i confess to making the backing track sound like its just had a shot of crack ...hazards of wanting to sing songs that are not necessarily meant for vocals like mine i guess.

I do not normaly change the key more than one step up or down. Going 2 or more tends to give that funny sound due to tempo change that goes along when pitch is change. So I dont need an 14 steps key adjuster.
When customer request for change of key 3 step down or up I will normaly give 2 steps and tell them it was change 3 steps. I prefer that the singers strugle(sp) with the song than have the backing sound crapy.
For recording, most tracking software have bult in key adjuster, it not just for midi it works for wav too. After changing the key the track need tempo correction.

Normally I don't change the key at all. I tend to choose songs where I don't need to touch the key. Should I have to, I have Vocopro DTX-5000G for that purpose. I hate the way the music is affacted so much that I just try to avoid key changes as much as possible. That's partly the reason I don't do Bon Jovi songs - I like them but can't make it that high
I have RJ-4200 which I can't use for lasers but the outcome is about thet same with that and Vocopro.
I assume it'd be possible to change key on besides midi files, other files too. There's at least one software available for that (check techie forum) and as Missy said, Adobe probably can do it too. Don't know for sure tho, never tried it myself!
Cheers!

I'm brutal with myself... ....
I don't change keys
I would consider changing a key to slightly higher to sing... for example... something with a few notes just outside of my lower range, like "Wicked Game" (Chris Isaak). There are a few songs... like "Invincible", or 'Xanadu' that make me 'uncomfortable' with a reeeeeaaallly high note, but I know I CAN hit them, so I force myself to do it without a key change. It's kind of hit or miss though... because if my vocals are a bit off, I'll skip or crack on that high note (which makes me nervous ANYway)
If I wanted to change a key on a song, I would try to use CEP (cool edit pro) to do it with. CEP has a pitch changer which does not effect the tempo.

Yep, I've changed keys. Sometimes to practice/warmup, I will lower a step or 2 (background vocal sound weird at that point). I've recorded a couple at 1/2 to 1 step change, if the range suits my voice better.

I've never used a key changer thinger...... for one thing, I don't know how! HAHA! I use Acoustica Mixcraft, and I don't think it even has a key controller.... but then again, there's lots of buttons n stuff I've never touched, so I have no idea.
I WAS gonna do "broken wing" in a lower key, but I kept messing myself up, so I switched back to the original key and just practiced more to get the high parts. If I can't hit it, I don't sing it

My karaoke machine has a built-in key changer. I really love it, especially for songs that are too low for me (esp. guys' songs). It doesn't change the tempo on mine as someone mentioned. But on some songs, it makes the background vocals or instruments sound weird if you change the key too much.

Nothing wrong with using a key changer, just impossible to always sing on the original + it would often happen that the backing is not on the correct key!
I use the key changer call, EAX Console from Creative, if anyone of you have a SB Audigy2, you should use this software, if you want to hear how good it performs I can tell you which song I posted that's not on the original key, bet you'll never guess!
Just noticed that from the 10 songs I have posted, 7 are not on the original and two are at -2btw, in some cases, some were just on the wrong key to start with:(
