I've been curious about this for some time now.  Many of us here are either married, in committed relationships, dating, etc.  How does your "other half" feel about your singing?  Are they supportive, encouraging and responsive?  Or do they think you should never be allowed near a microphone ever again?

If you go to karaoke venues with your spouse/significant other/date... do they listen to you intently and applaud your efforts, telling you afterward how well you did?  Or do they sit there and act like you were never on stage?

How about past relationships?  Was their disinterest in your love for singing a factor in ending the relationship?  Would things have been different if they had been more supportive of your interest?

Any other scenarios/situations I might have missed?

Just idle curiosity here... Any and all contributions welcome.

umm... well my husband hates karaoke and it BORES him to death.... so when I sing.... yep... same thing.... bored to death! ROFL! Mind you, he absolutely HATES country music...

He liked my version of "Material Girl" tho.... he goes
"yah... this one's good" BAHAHA!

I gotta sing some Heart and then he might be interested! HAHA! Is there a female band equivalent of The Ramones? LMAO! cuz THEN he'd like it for sure! assuming I'd actually be able to SING it...... meh..... doubtful!

SPEAKING Of spouses, etc....

When are we gonna do that "Friends/Spouses" theme week? Ya know? sub songs that or spouses or family members, or friends sing? That's gonna be FUN!

I fall in love with Tig's wifey when I hear her sing too!

LOL

My ex liked my singing, but didn't support the concept of the karaoke company I run.

Hmm, Justy loves me to sing... He was actually pretty much the first person i ever sang FOR. And, heck, i sing ALL day, constantly, and even hum in my sleep... he would be pretty screwed if he DIDN"T like it:) As for past relationships, I don't think he cared much for it, so, I never did, around him.

NEver been to karaoke, but, I doubt Justy would ever go, anyways.

And as for sig. others/partners... Seby, you like my singing.. Don't you baby?:) lol.

Hard to say foresure LOL...

Hubby's idea of being supportive is "Eh.. that was ok..." or "that wasn't bad"  :? and really he thinks this is being supportive LOL  I never sing at home or record when he's here.

He hates going into smokey places.. but I drag him with me so I can go sing karaoke. He then just sits there and is ZERO fun... Geeshh... I need to start gettin out by myself LOL. If I ask how that song sounded he says "ok" LOL... If I say I want to sing a particular song.. he'll say he doesn't think I should.. I do it anyways (yes I know this is hard to believe LOL) and it's the one the crowd tells me the love the best ROFL..

As far as recording and subbing here goes.. I've reached the "he don't ask and I don't volunteer" point LOL... so he has no clue anymore what I sing or don't sing for you all cuz otherwise you'd never see me here... LMAO

I wanted to add... i feel so lucky that justy is so supportive of everything I do;) He requests songs, listens to the half done mixes, helped me learn to record in the FIRST place etc. He has a gazillion cds of me, and listens to me on the way to school/work every day. He even brags about  me to other people:) (lol, yes, embarrasing) Even if You all HATE my voice, it is enough knowing how much HE loves it:) ok, done bragging about my wonderful Justin:) Bye bye.

Of course darlin... you know your singing makes me we..eh... uh I mean hor... uh I mean... uh.. hot... yeah.. that's what I meant. :D

My hunny is so very particular about singing... if I get a 'thumbs up' from HIM, I KNOW it was pretty darned good. ;) Most of the time he's like 'meh' (he often doesn't like my song choices). But, he IS supportive of my trying to improve.

My 'ex' was a real d*ck about my singing... He looked at me one time while I was singing something and he said "Don't quit your day job". Well, that wasn't the first nasty thing he said to me... and it wasn't the last, but it was significant.

Like Gilly, I sing pretty much ALL the time. I'm either humming something, or singing something, or at least have some tune running through my head 24/7. Ex would often look at me when I would start humming something and snarl "What are YOU so happy about??" (grr) I was like.. wtf?

So bottom line... yeah... even though I have no aspirations to become a fabulous singer or whatever, it's a HUGE part of my life (and that of everyone else around me... heheheh) so it's pretty important that they either don't mind it, or are supportive of it.

There are two of Deb's songs on my site... click on the "Record" link. Whups... one of Tig's too! LOL!

And Tig does have a small point. She got frustrated with me trying to learn newer songs... wanted me to stick more in my "niche", which I hated, so it made me want to try others!

We are both supportive of each other however, I do believe Richard is a better singer than I am by far!!!

It's helpful that we both soooo enjoy karaoke and all that applies.  I guess we're pretty lucky in that respect

Susie :oh yeah:

My Story and Foxeroxy's could be about the same....wonder if our husbands are related (lol)  I NEVER EVER record when my husband is home...He hates country music...and I think pretty much my singing..well maybe hate is a strong word,,,guess it's more of "he couldn't care less"....He never hears any of my songs and I'm not sure he even knows about this site (LOL) Just that there is a site I post songs to.
I was asked to do a show a few months ago ,,not karaoke,, and he did go with me and actually said one of the songs I did was good...I was in shock the rest of the night (LOL)

I think the husbands and wives that both love music and singing are very lucky,,,

Very interesting thread :)

my husband supports me 100 percent. He and my son are my roadies!! eveyrone except my youngest sings at our karaokes. She's shy. He will tell me if i should do this or that. i record in front of everyone. We sing duets at karaoke. Now...he didn't much like it at first...but he does now. If someone comes and asks him to hire us....he  points to me and says......ask her, it's her company...she's the brains....im just the brawn. I know i'm lucky......

My "Significant Other" is very supportive.  Heck, he does all my recordings and mixing for me.  He's even set aside about 1 or 2 days a months now as "Cindy recording days" ... and he works hard to make the "sub" as good as possible (only so much ya can do with an "average singer", but he sure gives it his all!). And..... he really likes my singing style .... tells me I have a "sweet" voice ... and sing with lots of energy and emotion.  YUP ... he's real supportive and I sooooo love him for that.

Our relationship obviously has other things that keep it going strong ... but, yes, I do think our mutual love of music and for entertainment, performance... etc .... is a large reason we "have" the relationship we do.  Music and entertainment is not only his "bread & butter", but its one of his passions.  I can't imagine NOT sharing that with him.  And... I've been involved in vocal performance, bands, folk groups, orchestra, theatre.... you name it .... since I was in High School.  So.... its EASY to share that passion.

I also LOVE to hear him sing .... he's not what you'd call a "quality" singer, but he sings great songs .... with lots of soul.  He rarely sings, though.  He's a DJ/KJ... prefers to think of himself as a facilitator/engineer than a singer.

Cool thread, DEB!!

Yep Linda.. I think they are related.. but I just tell my hubby that he hates fun things and likes to "suck the life out of fun things" LOL.. He actually said to me not too long ago "Not bad for a short lil girl" and I think that was a compliment LOL... well.. I took it as one anyways... and almost didn't know how to act the rest of the day!

As far as this place goes.. he knows there are places I put up songs online but he has no clue where they are located. Which is ok by me. LOL..

I agree... that if sig others share their love of music it seems to make their relationship stronger.

My hubby can't sing.... and has... er.. no sense, when it comes TO music. I guess that is why  I find it even more special that he loves MINE. Before we started dating, he had never listened to anything, other than what HE liked... for example... he had never HEARD of... say, madonna for example;) He has come a LONG way:)

I am young though, and haven't been with him for very long. I would say, my parents had more of an influence in my singing than he ever has... and my parents don't care for my voice, and consider my older sister "the singer".. I just talk too much, and hum all the dam.n day. WHich is probably the reason, I don't do karaoke, and don't sing in front of people:) Lol, as my ma put it, I am a trombonist, who doesn't have her tbone with her...and, I sound LIKE it when I sing:)

Ooops,  I am babbling of course, feel free to do the usual, and ignore me.

My friends are supportive....hmmm strange that friends care more than a husband does huh?

That's a shame, cause I think you're a terrific singer Gilly. You SHOULD try going to karaoke with friends!
