Are there songs out there that make you go, "hey, that had to have been written just for me."  Your little theme song, or anthem, or a song that nails perfectly an experience that you went through in your life?

Here are some of  mine:

Bob Seger - Against The Wind:  Good Lord Bob, all you have to do is change the name Jannie to Annie and it would be written just for me.  I get the chills when I hear this song.  Bob's voice and mine aren't too compatible, so it's not one I sing in public.

Sam Kinison's version of the Trogg's Wild Thing:  No I'm not bitter, LOL.  But I do have to ask, "how do you live with yourself! Ahhhhhhh!  Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

Maroon 5's And She Will Be Loved:  I can't think of a song that hits being in a one sided relationship better, with someone that always feels like your going one step forward and then one back over and over again.  And even the ending of the song where it's cannonized, "it's seem so hard to say goodbye."

Garth Brooks' Wolves:  Wow.  This is a hard one for me to sing.  Not hard in ability, I've got that Garth smooth tenor voice and can hit 95% of his material no problem.  But hard as sometimes my eyes tears up - guess I should put this in the songs that make me cry section.  Two times in my life I've been on the financial ropes, and the song is a metaphor for that - both times by chance it has been in the winter, the backdrop of this song.  A little bit of Garth trivia.  Garth Brooks compiles his albums/CD's from least favorite to favorite.  So his favorite track on each CD he has done is the last one, and so on.  This is the last track to No Fences - and IMHO Garth Brooks' best song he has ever done.

"I don't mean to be complaining Lord.  You've always seen me through.  And I know you have your reasons for each and everything you do.  But tonight outside my window there's a mournful lonesome voice I know, and I can't keep from thinking, 'bout the ones the wolves pulled down.  Oh Lord keep me from being, the one the wolves pull down."

I make a point to sing this at least once a month - it's humbling and reminds me where I've come from and helps me remain thankful for the many blessings in my life - and helps me remember that bad times didn't kill me.

-----

OK, how about you?  What song tells your life?

How Am I Supposed To Live Without You ~~  was totally in love with this guy that was a really really close friend.  He had NO idea ~~  but I kept hoping and hoping.  He'd date ~~ I'd always get along with the girlfriend... they'd split and we'd start to hang out alot more again.

Wellllll .... long story short... he met HER ~~ and I just didn't like her.  Call me jealous ~~ I don't know ... but, I just didn't.

He Married Her ~~  I was invited to the wedding ~~ but it was too much for me.

I was driving around that afternoon ~~ and this song came on the radio.  I SWORE it was written with me as the "main character".  To this day .. I hear it and cry.

Lost touch with them after that.  They moved ~~ and I moved on.

I really identified with Queensryche. Much of their music is anti-establishment, or at least, vilifies the evil corporate sector. They show us the bad relationships we've had, bad parents, and yet, with one unique song, can show us what the world is like, thru the eyes of a child.

They show a gritty underworld, or a world of city streets that no tv show would ever dare to show the public... and yet, they also display a ray of hope that shines forth from the gook and muck.

They have traveled to the world of vampires and goth-inspired dreams, and yet, they also tell the tragic tale of a local homeless person that used to be on television.

Seeing thru the eyes of a stranger, and whispering the words of madness in a cyber rock opera that people have compared to The Who's "Tommy" in it's scope and depth. Where an underworld leader targets religious and policial leaders... where they use drug addicted killers, and prey upon the lost souls of a hooker turned nun, and a fallen preist. Where love flickeres briefly, and estinquished forever in total and utter madness.

"Operation : Mindcrime" has it all. And that rock opera is what made me an instant fan. Their followup albulm "Empire" was more commercially viable, and they had several top ten hits off that cd.

If there is a song that's truly "mine", though, it's "Silent Lucidity", where a young boy is taught that dreams are expressive, and all encompassing. And where the parent themselves realizes that the child is indeed the master!

Hush now don't you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is another chance
Wide awake you face the day
Your dream is over or has it just begun

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly you hear and see
This magic new dimension
I-will be watching over you
I-I'm gonna help you see it though
I-will protect you in the night
I-I'm smiling next to you in silent lucidity

Hug me if you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
The walls you build within come tumbling down
And a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of Illusion can you realize
Your dream's alive you can be the guide but
(I) will be watching over you
(I) I'm gonna help you see it though
(I) will protect you in the night
(I) I'm smiling next to you

Different songs during different parts of my life.

Used to be 'Thank God and Greyhound' by Roy Clark was the story of my life.  Every time I heard that song I'd remember my exes and rejoince.  Of course there are a few times there 'Always gonna love you' by Gary Moore was more applicable.  Of course, Cryin' by Chris Issak is up there too.  But mostly it's Thank God and Greyhound in hindsight!!!  God, I love that song....

When I was with them it was more like 'You don't love me anymore' by Weird 'Al' Yankovic or 'Seperate Ways' by Gary Moore.

With my fiance I feel like I'm on the receiving end of 'I put a spell on you' or 'Alligator Wine' by Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

Now that I'm with my fiance every love song ever written seems to pale in comparison to what I have now.  After more than 5 years together we'll be married later this year and nothing could make me happier.

BTW, when there's not enough fiber in the diet I'm sure Constipation Blues by Screamin' Jay comes up.....

John Mayer's 'Why Georgia' pretty much nails a lot of events for me.  I used to call it my theme song:

"I am driving up 85 in the
Kind of morning that lasts all afternoon
just stuck inside the gloom
4 more exits to my apartment but
I am tempted to keep the car in drive
And leave it all behind

Cause I wonder sometimes
About the outcome
Of a still verdictless life

Am I living it right?
Why Georgia, why?

I rent a room and I fill the spaces with
Wood in places to make it feel like home
But all I feel's alone
It might be a quarter life crisis
Or just the stirring in my soul

Either way I wonder sometimes
About the outcome
Of a still verdictless life

Am I living it right?
Why Georgia, why?

So what, so I've got a smile on
But it's hiding the quiet superstitions in my head
Don't believe me
When I say I've got it down

Everybody is just a stranger but
That's the danger in going my own way
I guess it's the price I have to pay
Still "everything happens for a reason"
Is no reason not to ask myself

If I am living it right
Am I living it right?
Why Georgia, why?
"

Yeah, that song still sums up a lot about me.  Another I think could have been written about a situation I was going through a while back is Alison Krauss 'Forget About It.'  That song still gets to me sometimes.

I Touch Myself - Divinyls

Actually, there's lots of songs that can apply to real-life experiences.  Isn't there a country song about why somebody likes country, and he says something along the lines of "Because that's my life they're singing about!"

"At This Moment" by Billy Vera always reminds me of someone who was very special to me.  So does "Just Once" by James Ingram.  And of course, who can't relate to "The Macarena"?

One song that crystalizes a moment in my life is Billy Dean's Only The Wind.

My mother had been going through declining health for a decade and it was discovered just by chance after seeing a tenacous doctor like "House" the TV show (keep digging, digging, digging, with differential diagnosis until hitting the real problem) that she had a huge brain tumor on her brain stem.  She need immediate surgery.

We had to go to San Antonio and I was staying in the BAQ at Lackland AFB.  That early morning of her surgery there was a wicked west Texas thunderstorm.  It knocked out power to a large section of the base and the thunder was shaking the building.

When I got into my car to drive over to Wilford Hall this song came on the radio, and I cried like a baby in the parking lot:

I remember as a child on a dark stormy night
I heard the screendoor slam and I was overcome with fright
So afraid that someone bad was trying to get in
And momma came to comfort me and said
"It's only the wind, and nothing more
Not the end of the world knockin' at the door
So close your eyes and dream again
Believe me, It's only the wind"

Everytime I'e had to face a bitter storm of life
Those words of comfort were my shelter in the night
But tonight I don't believe I'm able to pretend
The storm that you and I are up against is only the wind

I can hear you downstairs and you're just about to leave
There's nothing else that I can do to keep you here with me, no
And now the screen door's slammin' and I'm frightened once again
What I wouldn't give if I could be convinced

It's only the wind, and nothing more
Not the end of the world walking out the door
I wish that I could dream again
Believin' it's only the wind
oh,nothing more, not the end of my world
Walking out the door
I wish that I could dream again
Believin' it's only the wind
Only the wind

My mother survived and is still alive today - that was 14 years ago...

Humm. The day I heard Sarah McLachlan sing Fallen, I about fell over.

Heaven bent to take my hand
And lead me through the fire
Be the long awaited answer
To a long and painful fight

Truth be told I've tried my best
But somewhere along the way
I got caught up in all there was to offer
And the cost was so much more than I could bear

Though I've tried, I've fallen...
I have sunk so low
I have messed up
Better I should know
So don't come round here
And tell me I told you so...

We all begin with good intent
Love was raw and young
We believed that we could change ourselves
THe past could be undone
But we carry on our backs the burden
Time always reveals
The lonely light of morning
The wound that would not heal
It's the bitter taste of losing everything
That I have held so dear.

I've fallen...
I have sunk so low
I have messed up
Better I should know
So don't come round here
And tell me I told you so...

Heaven bent to take my hand
Nowhere left to turn
I'm lost to those I thought were friends
To everyone I know
Oh they turned their heads embarassed
Pretend that they don't see
But it's one missed step
You'll slip before you know it
And there doesn't seem a way to be redeemed

Though I've tried, I've fallen...
I have sunk so low
I have messed up
Better I should know
So don't come round here
And tell me I told you so...

Oh yaaa, who can forget...

how can you see into my eyes like open doors
leading you down into my core
where i've become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home wake me up inside
wake me up inside
call my name and save me from the dark
bid my blood to run
before i come undone
save me from the nothing i've become

now that i know what i'm without
you can't just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life

wake me up inside
wake me up inside
call my name and save me from the dark
bid my blood to run
before i come undone
save me from the nothing i've become
bring me to life

frozen inside without your touch without your love darling only you are the life among the dead

all this time i can't believe i couldn't see
kept in the dark but you were there in front of me
i've been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
without a thought without a voice without a soul
don't let me die here
there must be something more
bring me to life

EVANESCENCE

doesn't anyone have HAPPY songs that describe their lives?
here's mine:

"Somebody" by Reba McEntire

At a diner down on Broadway they make small talk
When she brings his eggs and fills his coffee cup
He jokes about his love life
And tells her he's 'bout ready to give up
That's when she says,"I've been there before
Keep on lookin'
'Cause maybe who you're lookin' for is..."

Somebody in the next car
Somebody on the morning train
Somebody in the coffee shop
That you walk right by everyday
Somebody that you look at
But never really see
Somewhere out there is somebody

Across town in a crowded elevator
He can't forget the things that waitress said
He usually reads the paper
But today he reads a stranger's face instead
It's that blue-eyed girl
From two floors up
Maybe she's the one
Maybe he could fall in love with

Somebody in the next car
Somebody on the morning train
Somebody in the coffee shop
That you walk right by everyday
Somebody that you look at
But never really see
Somewhere out there
Is somebody

Now they laugh about the moment that it happened
A moment they'd both missed until that day
When he saw his future in her eyes
Instead of just another friendly face
And he wonders why
He searched so long
When she was always there at that diner waiting on

Somebody in the next car
Somebody on the morning train
Somebody in the coffee shop
That you walk right by everyday
Somebody that you look at
But never really see
Somewhere out there
Oh somewhere out there is somebody

this is VERY Similar to how Tyson and I got together.... it's freakishly similar, actually

Hm, I can't think of any song, but, my guy friends always referred to THIS song, as Gilly's song. Although, it used to hurt my feelings, because it isn't exactly a pleasant song, but, if you know it, it has a great sound.

Life Size Mirror - no use for a name

She was done before the start, always mending broken hearts
Making others miserable not knowing who she's hurting
Father said, "This day will be, one for everyone to see"
Is it true you'll follow suit and have you learned a thing?
It's just a selfish way to go, it's safe to say she'll never know

For every person there's a whole life story waiting to be told
When she is happy it's OK, but then these people start to fade
Then we'll just watch her self-destruct as she gets old

She put up defensive shields, to walk through all of life's minefields
All defined by make-up and a car behind she's hiding
"Father do you have to go, left me questions I dont know"
Any answers or even close the life time lie was true

She's gonna move on with her life, and take it one heart at a time
And watch the little girl inside her wait behind as she goes on
But with this black heart she decides, who she'll take in and shove aside
Until the day she sees that everyone is gone

Getting used to people leaving, thinking true love is deceiving
Soon she'll know how lonely it can be

Now was it really worth the pain? A couple pills make her feel sane
While she lives out the story written for the part she is to play
With so much shame for her to hide, there's no more dignity, no pride
Then there will only be dark in her light of day

And she will only see a reflection, of her father's rejection
Nothing will change until she breaks this life, this life-size mirror

So many songs, so many snippets of songs.

"Cyndi Lauper - I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend" was the song that helped me over a historical (but significant) "ex"

"I Don't Want To Be Your Friend"

I don't wanna see your face
I don't wanna hear your name
I don't wanna thing
Just stay away baby
Don't wanna know if you're alright
Or what you're doin' with your life
Don't wanna hear that you'll stay in touch maybe

I'll get just fine
So if you're goin' then darlin' goodbye, goodbye

Don't call me in the middle of the night no more
Don't expect me to be there
Don't think that it will be the way it was before
I'm not over you yet
And I don't think I care
And I don't want to be your friend

I'll forget we ever met
I'll forget I ever let
Ever let you into this heart of mine baby
You just gotta let me be
You gotta keep away from me
'Cause all I want to be is just free of you baby
Don't you come around
And say you still care about me
Go now, go now

Don't call me in the middle of the night...

You take it casually, and that's what's killing me
I'll get by just fine
So if you're goin' then darlin' goodbye, goodbye

Don't call me in the middle of the night no more
Don't expect me to be there
Don't think that it will be the way it was before
No, no baby
Don't call me in the middle of the night no more
I don't want to be your friend
Don't think that it will be the way it was before
I don't want to be your friend...

=================================

Depeche Mode's "Get The Balance Right" probably comes closest to my core outlook on life:

There's more besides
Joyrides
The little house in the countryside
Understand
Learn to demand
Compromise
And sometimes lie

Get the balance right
Get the balance right

Be responsible
Respectable
Stable but gullible
Concerned and caring
Help the helpless
But always remain
Ultimately selfish

When you think you've got a hold of it all
You haven't got a hold at all
When you reach the top
Get ready to drop
Prepare yourself for the fall
You're gonna fall
It's almost predictable

Almost

Don't turn this way
Don't turn that way
Straight down the middle until next Thursday
First to the left
Then back to the right
Twist and turn 'til you've got it right

The Girl by John Michael Montgomery.  I'm adopted and my birth parents were on drugs when they had me.   Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson.  When that came out I was quitting a job that I had worked for over 31/2 years and it was hard to move on.  Achy Breaky Heart, if one more guy breaks my heart I'm going to choke them jk. the little thing looked like it was smoking oh well

The song that i relate to the most as in this is my life is the song by Three doors down called "Let me go."

One more kiss could be the best thing...
But one more lie could be the worst...
All these thoughts are never resting,
and your not something i deserve.

In my head theres only you now,
The world just falls down on me.
In this world theres real and make believe,
but this seems real to me.

YOU LOVE ME BUT YOU DON'T KNOW WHO I AM,
I'M CAUGHT BETWEEN THIS LIFE I LEAD AND WHERE I STAND,
YOU LOVE ME BUT YOU DON'T KNOW WHO I AM,
SO LET ME GO...
LET ME GO...

...........that is my love life song...hahaha....
and for my life in general i would say the song "Beautiful by JoyDrop. And the song called. "LIFE HAPPENED" is just like the life story of my friends and I. We listen to that song and laugh about how much it sounds like us.
