I sing ALL the time.  While working, driving, showering... you name it.  I've always got a song in my head, and I feel like I need to let it out.  So it's only natural that I would have taken a liking to karaoke.  Ever since I was a small child I wanted to sing publicly (not PROFESSIONALLY, just to be able to sing with a group or solo and have other people singing as well.)  Karaoke brought me out of a shell I was stuck in for many years.

Singing is a release for me.  I feel a sense of freedom while I am on stage that I can't explain other than to say it's a comforting place for me.  I feel right at home up there.

If I'm in a bad mood, singing changes it.  If I'm sad, singing makes me feel better.  If I'm happy and feeling on top of everything, singing only intensifies that factor.  Whether I'm a good singer or not, I enjoy it... and karaoke is my outlet.

Plus, I love listening to others sing and being around other people that enjoy it as much as I do.  You form friendships and a sense of unity with others who share the same interests.

I have always loved music and dancing.  My first public appearnace was at the tender age of 9. When I rounded up all the neighbourhood kids (aided by my little sister), about 11 sat on the grass while I stood on a brick wall and sang Paper Roses over and over and over (ya get the picture!).  From then on I was pretty much hooked, I used to put on my mom and dads old LP's and singles and sing my little heart out in the front room.  I'll sing if people listen and I'll sing if they don't. Singing is just good for the soul.  I also love to watch people singing, performing, professional and non-professional, it's all good.  This site was like a gift from heaven to me. I just love listening to people sing and of course I get to put my 'bit' in too.

So there we are, 30 years on and still singing...... just try to stop me  :hi5:

Luv Di xxx

I like to be able to sing songs that I grew up listening to. A lot of my submissions are 80's music: songs that were new when I was in high school. In this way, I feel like a participant.

I played guitar at one time and would like to take it up again and I think I get even more enjoyment out of that than I do singing.

I can't get the Rolling Stones, Boston, and the Stylistics to stop by my condo and back me when I feel like singing.  I even tried getting better equipment, still, these folks are arrogant.  Never wanted a permanent gig with any of these pretentious $&#^'s, just to sit in.

So I settle.

I love to sing because it makes me happy.  I'm all about doing stuff that makes me happy and that's one of them.

I'm still disturbed by the thought of Neil Diamond having sex with his audience...not sure what's worse, the broken hips or the torn "Depends" undergarments... :O

I just started singing a month ago...and now I can't stop.  My wife has joined me once...gave me a "that was good" when I returned to my seat...  But I've met friends at the bar who are very encouraging, the KJ announces "Tim is in the house" when I walk in, and people recognize me when I arrive and are always very complimentary.  Besides spending time with my 10 year old son, it's the thing I enjoy most in my life.  I wish I hadn't waited until now to start.  Right now, it's Friday afternoon in Illinois, I just got home from work and I'll be heading out tonight at 9:00pm to do it again (I already lined up a babysitter!).  Yep, I'm addicted.

For me, it's not so much about singing as it is being around people that you have something in common with.  Let's face it, there's NOTHING more boring than sitting in a bar listening to a band or DJ playing music, and there's NOTHING more exciting than hanging around in a bar with a bunch of folks who enjoy singing and performing just as much as you do.  Where else can you find a social environment like that???  If you've ever been in a band and performed at bars and spent all evening busting your butt for some half-hearted recognition from two or three drunks, you'll know EXACTLY what I mean when I say there are no better bar crowds on the face of the planet than those found in Karaoke bars.

Instant gratification, baby! The roar of the crowd! It's all good.... can't think of anything bad about karaoke except for a some drunks that have gotten fresh right in front of my hubby a few times.  But I even enjoy the not so good singers cuz they have the courage to get up there and do their thing.  Everyone pretty much has the same thing on their mind, they wanna relax and have a good time.  I've made soooo many friends at karaoke and on karaoke sites.  For the most part, people are just very friendly and supportive.  What's there not to like?

Last time I was at Disneyland I found a place nearby that was a hangout for Disneyland costumed cast members so I got to hang out with them in between songs. I think if it weren't for the fact that this place had karaoke these people wouldn't hang out there.

hmm why you ask?
1. I LOVE MUSIC, I also grew up in a musical family. My Dad has his own band,my uncle's are also in bands. My sister and mom love to sing as well.
2.It's my way of venting! Relaxing, letting the stress out of my system. So if you catch me singing a tune like "SHUT UP!" by Kelly Osbourne than ya know to stay clear of me LOL
3.I love the rush!
4. I sing 2 nights a week with my dads band, so I need more than just 2 days LOL Tho I am always singing, car, shower etc ... I need to have music playing all the time or I will just be extremely bored LOL

Jess = )

Hi Jimmy,

From looking at the poll results so far, it seems that our reasons for singing karaoke are as diverse (perhaps even more) as our choice of songs. For me, I used to do nightclub comedy back in the early to mid-70s and I'd always stick in a song at the end of the show. I probably did this because my mom was a professional nightclub singer before she got married and so I grew up in a house where she was always singing. I've been married for over 20 years and I used to sing around the house, in the shower, in my car, etc.. I just love to sing. The wife who I'm divorcing said to me just a month or so before I filed; "Stop singing - you sound too happy."  Well, I had always told people philosophically-speaking "Never let anyone steal your song." I had always wondered if I had the nerve to get back up in front of an audience after so many years away from the stage.  I was searching for ways to turn the negative divorce experience into something positive and also wanted to start getting out to meet new people. so I headed toward the local karaoke bar, begged the crowd to forgive me for what I was probably about to do to the song I chose to do (I think it was "Johnny Be Good") and then, with my microphone hand trembling, just "went for it." And the reaction was really great but my self-esteem had taken such a beating from my wife that I just figured the crowd was being polite and that I hadn't really sung that well. But, still, I sang a couple more songs and I went home feeling okay. It was probably my third time out that I took a big chance and chose to sing "Rocket Man" (which I've subbed here) and this time the crowd didn't just applaud and say "great job", they were on their feet whooping, whistling, hollaring and applauding. I remember just standing there motionless and thinking to myself "Okay, what the hell did I just do?" So I guess I was really "hooked" after that because a big chunch of my confidence returned that night and so the whole karaoke experience; the friendships I've formed, the support of the crowd, the ability to share my feelings and experiences through various songs or sometimes just to confront  head-on what I'm going through by experiencing the lyrics, the challenge of learning a difficult song, the way people respond so happily to hearing their favorite song get sung and how you can touch their hearts in such a special way with a tune. And most recently I've been able to carry singing more directly into my faith in God by sharing my songs at church fundraisers  - so it's all been very therapeutic  and even a spiritually-fulfilling experience for me. So not only didn't I allow my wife to "steal my song" - I found a way to make my song even more special to me and to share it and maybe make a few others happy in the process. Karaoke has truly been a Godsend for me.  Thanks for asking! Sorry my answer got too long. God bless.

Christopher

I like going out to Karaoke to be around a bunch of really good people.  The regulars at Karaoke are some of the nicest people you can meet.   Oh yeah........I like to sing, too.  It's always nice when someone comes up to you and asks you to do a certain song for them.

But sometimes I have found that I get burned out also.  So I've stopped going as often and now when I do go I have a lot more fun. :dancin:

All my life it's been the same.

I hear music, my feet and body move, and I HAVE to sing!

I think these days I enjoy singing more than the dancing because of certain things that having a baby in your 30's does to your body......YUCK!  But when you sing, you can make almost any song get across any feelings you have just by the influx and tones.

Does anyone else ever marvel at how many gazillions of song lyrics the human mind can keep and call up on command?  I would bet that for 90% of the songs I hear, I know 90% of their lyrics.
