What do you do when you really want to sing, but basically you have "singers block" for some reason?

Ex: You want to sing, feel like singing, but every song you sing just doesn't sound right.

How do you find that "right" song to get you back on track? What creative things do you do to work out the block?

NHOH and BJC... sorry guys.. my turn to ask some questions..  :dancin:

Isn't that a terrible feeling?  I hate when that happens.  Sometimes when it does happen to me, I just go back and sing a track that I've done already without recording it....just to get into a groove.  If that doesn't work, and you have digital cable, you can use the music channels to maybe pick up a tune you've never heard before.

And sometimes, you just have to not sing at all.  Sometimes you need to give it a day or two.  Rest assured it is a temporary thing and it will pass.  Sometimes you just burn yourself out.  That's why I only sub two days a week now instead of trying to do it every day.  Nobody's gonna forget about you if you don't sub.

I know EXACTLY what you mean Roxy!

I go through this quite often, but I have a set couple of "simple" songs, kinda like theme songs, which I can handle apart from under very bad circumstances, and they always get me feeling better and back on track...

Once I sing through a couple of them, I feel better, and the block just seems to go away...  But that block is STILL darn frustrating...!

Cindy ~~

I sooooo know what you are talking about!!

When this happens to me... I always go back to my "old familiars" ...... move right back into my "very comfortable zone"..... and sing those 4-5 songs a few times.  Usually.... this helps me figure out what I may be doing wrong on the "newer" stuff.

Because I KNOW how I usually sound on the "old" songs  & because I am REALLY comfortable on those song ~~ If I'm doing something differently it usually "jumps right out at me" and makes it sooooooo much easier for me to figure out what that may be.

I go through this very same thing about once every 3 weeks.  When this "block" strikes, I pop in a CD or scour through my PC music files to see if there's anything new I would like to try to get back into the groove.  Sometimes I hear a song that's really fun and upbeat, or one that fits a certain situation I might be experiencing at the moment and I think, "Hmm, that would be a good one to sing!"  I sing along with the original and then determine whether or not I think I can sing it by myself.

After I got over the whole stage fright thing with karaoke or any venue of public singing, I stuck with the same songs for months.  The "comfortable" ones, as the *other* Cindy talked about.  I would do those over and over because I felt they were safe.  On a few occasions, I would attempt something new, only to discover that the track backing sounded funny, or the lyrics were completely wrong on the screen.  I would then go right back to the same ol' same ol'.

Now, most places I go it's pretty much expected that I'll whip out just about anything.  I'm really fond of doing songs that you don't hear as often.  Older 70's and 80's music people have forgotten about or ones that I just love to sing.  I try to stay away from the usual songs you hear weekend after weekend.  I know I don't want to hear the same slew of songs every time I go out, and I'm pretty sure others are tired of hearing them too.  I like to try obscure music as well.  Even if it's not very popular or familiar.  Sometimes the crowd loves it, sometimes they don't respond.  It matters not to me, though.  As long as I am singing something I enjoy and I've gotten out of my "block", I'm fine with that.

You guys have great ideas but I think I'm going to be stuck like Jason said: "And sometimes, you just have to not sing at all."

There are a lot of times I sing and don't record but I just can't even do that right now LOL... good grief.. I've tried singing older songs that I normally sing.. it's been going on for a few days now LOL..

I'm not worried people will forget about me LMAO... I'm so lovable that I won't let them! ROFL... Just kidding.. ;-)

I just have a lot on my mind lately which is usually when I sing to work stuff out so that is what is so odd. That's how I got through the last 2 years of my life, and why I started singing again after a 10 yr of no-sing (not even to radio).

And... CC... you're going to laugh at this one: I FEEL like singing slow songs.... Oh gawd... help me... but my voice won't cooperate with my heart and head!

I keep hearing slow songs on the radio (yep I've been listenin to radio again and Yahoo! Launch videos and music -- not helping) -- every where I turn are slow songs..

Glad to hear that I'm not alone tho and that does happen to other people! ~ so for now.. I'm going to look forward to DD's new song coming soon... and I'll just hang out in the forums.. (which is trouble in itself LMAO).

I listen to the radio! Oftentimes a song you don't think of will play, and that will get me to thinking of others of that genre I like, or Ooohhhh, I wanna try THAT one! LOL!

And yes, the blue font on this grey backing SUCKS! I had to highlight all the words just to read them!

i am often whinging about this because i do like to try and get my teeth into songs that are not always a popular choice for people....so blocks i get frequently...take an earlier recording you were not quite 100 percent happy with...listen through pick the things you wish to change...and off you go...work on something you have already done :-)

If that happens to me, I have to just walk away for a while, completely shut music off for a while and then I start jonesing for it.  It usually takes an hour to a day and then I like a junkie, I need my fix or I start shaking real bad and seeing hallucinations of me in tight spandex singing “Sweet child of mine”, in front of 2000 screaming rabid weasels just as they are about to rip my throat open ... what??? ... Oh yea, like I am the only one that happens to ... ummm, what were we taking about??? :P

For me I never have a "its easy" song...I'm always having a hard time....for example, it took about 8 months to put together "A Day In The Life"...from very first time playing to final sub....fastest I've done a song is probably a month or so.....I keep more than one going at a time as I can get absolutely sick of playing the same song over and over...so I go between several until one of them pops out complete....almost always I'm sick of playing and hearing the song I sub....

but then it took Elvis about 60  tries to get Blue Swade Shoes..and he still flubbed the lyrics when he says "go cat do"....that's not how it was supposed to be....

Does this make eveyone feel speedy now?

I'm not complaining at all however...I'm crazy about music and this is a labor of love...for me there's no rush to sub...only to sub the best I can be.....

Russ

I wish I knew the answer to this.... I have been going through it since the holidays. I haven't recorded anything other than some harmonies since then. I still sing... I just don't record... it's two different things! When I sing it's free and simple. When I record it's more work... and striving for a higher level. I know I'll get my umph back... I'm not worried about it... I don't like to record songs like an assembly line...... churning out one after the other.... I get burnt out! Cause I tend to get obsessive about my recordings... I'm up till 3 or 4 AM mixing it and listening over and over... I'm like a mad scientist LOL! When it's done... I'm spent! I don't go to bed till it's done just right! I think it's great when people say... I did this in one take and didn't bother with any effects yada yada.. *sticking tongue out at Gilly.. who is busy moving so can't respond muahaha* I'm completely envious... 'cause I tend to over analyze a song to death! (Analysis Paralysis) I'm tired just thinking about it... I need a nap heheheh...

G'night George!
