Ok, I can see how you might have taken my statement the wrong way, but let me try to be a little more clear. ;)

Not saying that JFF people don't want comments. I'm saying that C people (in particular) want helpful feedback on their songs, whereas with JFF people, I'm pretty much limited to 'Hey! Fun listen! Glad to hear ya!' or whatever. Yes, there are quite a few people I try to listen to ANYway (even if they are JFF), but I often miss them in the 'latest submissions' list.

I like listening to your subs as well, I certainly don't overlook you because I dislike you or your singing, it's mostly a time thing. I don't have enough of it.

As for being a 'professional', well... technically yes, I and many others here who get paid for doing music are technically 'professionals', but that doesn't mean we're experts.. nor do I claim to be one. ;) But, most of the people I critique seem to appreciate my feedback, so I try to help out.

Oh boy..

I can not believe that a #'s game can reduce adults into children fighting on the playground..

OK... maybe this isn't fighting.. but bickering.. same stuff different day...  :argue:

What is the point of having #'s at all? Someone tell me (and I'm sure someone will) because all it causes is stuff like this and several other threads I've seen (and admittedly been parts of) the past few months. Anytime there's something as subjective as numbers are.. things like this will happen. It doesn't matter if you reduce the numbers from 1-5 or 1-3 or 1 or 2...

We all have opinions and we're entitled to them. I've heard Seby say this many times so it's very ironic that now there is a deal about one of her subs.

PHiLL--- my suggestion would be leave Critique and Just For Fun but get rid of the #'s game in the Critique field because it's giving off bad Karma too... :banghead:

I'm off now to go find some fun things at this site... There are some yet aren't there? Gosh I hope so... or do I get to be commented on and/or ranked on how much fun I have here too?

Im sorry but I find all this very funny  LOL  As they say what goes around comes around  LOL  This is not an attack or flame starter towards you seby or jvj...But now you know how others felt when you two first came here and seby started giving out extremely low Rankings on subs that were as good as seby's sub Complicated.

Subs that may have had a few minor pitch errors but for the most part was really good...seby gave a Ranking of 3 or 4 ....So now maybe you can understand why so many people were upset by that as the subs actually deserved a 6 or 7 or even an 8 or higher...The point is this...you are now reaping what you sowed...your sub Complicated actually deserves an 8 as it is very good.

If I were to Rank your sub...an 8 is what I would give it now.....(Before the Ranking was made into such a big deal)...I would have gave it a 9.5 due to the few Pitch errors... but 9.5 is not an option So I would have rounded it off to a 10 due to the fact that we are recording on computers and not in a studio where those errors would have been corrected.

Does that mean I would have been fluffing you? No!!!....It means that it would have been my personal Honest opinion based on the fact that you done the song your way and it was done on a computer....and I would realize that if it had been done in a studio where every thing is done by professional mixing engineers and all errors corrected and then run through the final mastering...yes it would have been worthy of a 10 and would have sounded awsome!!!

I knew this would eventually happen...but just wasnt sure how long it would take and Im so glad I didnt miss it  LOL

I have now listened to your Complicated sub over and over for 30 minutes and i must say that you have improved a whole bunch since I listened to you last year.

Actually Im impressed cause I really did not think that you would improve as you have always seemed to think that you are better than you actually are...I say this due to some of your comments Ive read about what you thought your subs deserved rank wise... so I knew that you were not hearing what the rest of us were hearing....pitchy and lack of emotion...but you are improving and thats a good thing and I wish you luck and success  :D

As for you jvj...I have nothing against you and as I said at the begining of this book... LOL ...Im not here to start a flame war...But honestly...from my obsevations here,It seems that sometimes your honesty is influenced by the fact that seby is your wife and that is understandable...but sometimes I cant help but think you live in a fantasy land of your own due to some of your comments Ive read in the past...meaning you two are not what you think...sure you do just fine with your hobbies and what ever just as any one else...but you too seem to be a victim of fluff...it shows in your comments at times  LOL  nothing against you...just being honest here :)  I think you might be a victim of your own fluff maybe  LOL

when you tell people that you are 400+ years old and stuff like that...you cant expect very many people to take you seriously  LOL

Well Im done here finally!!!  LOL  Hope you are having a great day and can take this with a grain of salt and have a laugh...because none of this is worth getting upset about ya know  LMAO  :handshake:   :hi5:   :worship:

maybe some day you can tell me about them ufo's ...Ive actually seen one ya know  LOL

Some of this is a problem with critique (implying qualified analysis) is really opinion.
We do need to get back to having fun though. That is why Syber and I posted a fun song and I personally am going to focus more on submitting songs than posting in the forums. Originally that was my approach and things were a little simpler.

It's all about the music dude!

Out of interest though... Because I need clarification... (I dyed some hair blonde and I think its taken part of my common sense with it...

Am I supposed to take from this, that you alter your rank according to how a certain sub would sound if recorded in a studio?  Because that confuses me :S

LOL

Much love,

Ok Dreamer, I appreciate what you're saying, but the comment of me giving such low ranks on 'good' songs is pure rubbish. I am 'over' the deal on my own sub... I made very clear the only reason it irritated me in the first place (but, even then it wasn't like the end of my world and *I* didn't make a big deal out of it).

In the entire time I've been here, I've only ranked below a 6 a few times, I could understand Brett's point of view because when I first came here, I heard a few 'not bad' songs that I gave an 'above average' rank. If I ever rank a 5 or less, we're getting into the 'painful' category. If I even rank below a 7, we're talking about a sub that will make you cringe in places. I remember ONE occassion, where I gave an overly harsh rating to a submission, simply because I really didn't like the way the person did the song. After being heavily admonished, I listened to the song again and changed my ranking because I realized I was being too harsh because I didn't like the style. I haven't been guilty of that mistake since then.

Ok, I would not give my sub a 10 if I were ranking it, because there ARE some goofs. I never take into consideration that anything other than *very slight* errors could be 'fixed' in a studio. As I sometimes argue with jvj, I don't want to see how good I could make my voice using studio effects and processing, the point is to actually *improve* my singing. I rarely use anything other than some reverb, because I would have that available singing through a mic and PA.

Do I think a 10 is 'fluffing'?? Well, on that song, yes... honestly... BUT, of course I would not berate someone for giving me a 10, because I know most of the people who rate my submissions are critical enough to not do that unless I REALLY deserved it, so my rank would average out. Listening to and ranking MY OWN song in that instance, I would have given it an 8-9, because I particularly liked the way it turned out and hearing the same sub from someone else, I would have enjoyed it.

I DO believe I was ranked down for taking a different spin on it than Avril did (as I said before, it wasn't intentional, I simply wasn't familiar enough with the song to know how it was originally presented so I didn't have the advantage of 'mimic-ing' her), but that's ok... it doesn't really bother me. I plan to do the song again (as a challenge to myself) with the more appropriate emotion and see what people think.

(btw - the statement that was made about how I could not have done the song in the first place without being very familiar with it is not accurate.... I have probably heard the song less than 10 times (in all) before I recorded it. I just have a *very* good memory for melodies, always have. My sister has a similar 'gift' (if you can call it that), she will memorize every word of a song after only hearing it a few times. She's GREAT with lyrics.)

30 minutes??? Geez, you must be totally sick of it now. Yes, the feedback this site provides has indeed helped me a great deal in some ways.

Now wait just a second here... 'pitchy'... I've made it very clear that I can hear when I go off-pitch on a song, and I've never slammed someone for stating something was off-pitch, BUT ya know... I don't think it's unfair to think a submission which only has a few off-pitch notes is considerably better than a submission which is *significantly* off-pitch.

Lack of emotion? I can see that on some of my submissions and it wasn't really something I noticed before people started pointing it out.. but NOW I listen for it. Sometimes I agree with other people's critiques, sometimes I do not (as is the perogative of us all), but emotion is definitely something I've been working on since those comments. I have also berated other submissions for lack of (or inappropriate) emotion. It's something I'm working on, personally... (that and the ability to sing with more power).

:madgo: :madgo: Ok... I am going to control myself here as much as possible after a statement like that. I have listened to your submission and you do sound very professional for your genre (one I don't care for), but to insinuate that jvj is a 'legend in his own mind' so to speak, really rankles me. It sounds to me, like YOU are a victim of too much BS you have read on the internet (especially after your last statement about 'UFOs').

Listen bud... jvj isn't a perfect singer, he well knows that and so do I, but his songwriting ability, combined with his abilities as a musician and vocalist gives him every right to be proud of himself. Sure I'm his wife, but I'm one of those people who would not have been impressed with his abilities unless he deserved it. I was a fan of his skills as a musician far before we were married.

Not even taking into account ANY of his talents aside from music, he was a professional performer and songwriter, making his living doing music for something like 30 years, in an extremly competitive environment. He was given kudos by some of the greatest performers in rock&roll history. He climbed to the top of any band he was in, performed at The Fillmore (San Francisco) alongside names you would all recognize, and was offered a recording contract by Bill Graham.

That means, unless those people in the professional industry are out of their minds, jvj must be pretty darned good. As far as ME, I don't take very seriously his supportive comments on my subs... I know he's my husband and (although he is EXTREMELY critical, even with me), he might say things just to be supportive. I'm not going to get a 'big head' when he tells me I did a great job on the group, because I hear the full critique at home.

Saying that either of us has an 'overinflated ego' just demonstrates your lack of information about us. I am confident about few things in my life. The things that I am confident about are well founded... singing is not one of those things. Never once have I bragged about being a wonderful singer or musician, (neither has jvj although he would certainly have more of a reason to do so). He IS however, a very good musician and he knows he is a good musician. Not because *I* told him so, but because the world-at-large has told him so his entire life. There isn't much of a better indication than that. If he had been able to take up Bill Graham on the offer at that time, jvj would probably be one of the classic musicians you have all heard about by now.

I'm sorry, but I just don't think it's 'amusing' or 'light hearted' to make statements such as those. If you're going to make those type of accusations, there are plenty of other folks on here FAR more deserving of them.

*Raises hand to speak*

I just have one last thing to say for this post:

"I can't pay my bills this month, so who gives a crap if my sub is rated 1 or 10.  It sure isn't gonna help me out any, it still gonna start out on page one and eventually find it's way off, and that is that."

(Once again, tongue is firmly planted in cheek, giving myself a sore there that people may mistake for....herpes!")

Cheers
Jason

To Brett....I guess my problem in the past on ranking is that if I listened to a song and could find nothing wrong with it at all...I would give it a 10, and at the same time if it was what I considered to be a 9.5 due to very minor errors I would still give a 10 because I felt it was better than a 9, and the ranking list dont give the option of a half point so I rounded it off to a 10.

I know how crazy that must sound to some but...if you think its worth 9.5 do you give it less just cause the option isnt there?

actually I guess I should not rank subs because im not a good critique...I can hear when someone gets off pitch or off time,But I dont feel qualified to try and tell some one how to improve.

I also have this problem with feeling that karaoke is for fun for all who want to take part in it, and I would never want to say or do anything to discourage someone from doing something they enjoy. some people would get discouraged if I gave them a ranking of 6 or 7 or 8 all the time....and then there's those who dont care about numbers...you never know who will take it as great job but needs improvement and will strive to improve or take it in another way and simply give up.

some have said they hated the ranking system because they put so much effort into there sub and got a 7 or 8 while they heard another sub that they thought was horrible and it got a 9 or 10....so then they got discouraged or angry.

could it be that the majority hears something different than they do ? Thats is possible, and its possible that some simply like some styles and the sound of certain voices better than others...so it could be its just a matter of personal preference of what people like whether it be voice, style or song genere.

and yes it could be that some will get more comments and better rankings because they have more friends. I went to a karaoke contest once that my cousin entered and my cousin wasnt the best singer there but he was in the top 5 of 20 but he never made it to the finals because one guy had his whole family and a bunch of friends there....the judges went by crowd response and this one guy had the most crowd response due to all his family and friends being there...but the guy was not a very good singer at all but he went to the finals. he was actually one of the worst singers there as he sounded very robotic, no emotion at all but still he went to the finals based on crowd response....lol

anyhow Brett...I think your ranking on that song was fair and reflected your honest opinion which is better than mine as ive never heard the original song. I was simply going by what I was hearing and my opinion was based on knowing she done it her way rather than trying to copy the original. I did hear the few minor flaws but had no clue as to how the emotion of the song should have been, I just felt she had improved from the last sub of hers I listened to.

as far as me ranking in the (past) and considering the things I mentioned....thats my fault and I realize that I should not consider those things and I realized that my ranking was not as critical as it should have been...all my fault, but to me this was just karaoke and mostly for fun...so I thought...my fault again :)

So now I only give 10's when I can not hear any flaws at all.  If its not a 10 then I dont rank anymore as it has caused people to become upset in some way and I would not want to discourage anyone from doing something they enjoy as I feel karaoke is for all to enjoy. Ive seen some people leave the site or get very upset or discouraged when others gave them a low rank and to me its not worth it.

Hope this clears things up from the last post.
by the way...nice to meet ya :)
