I would like some opinions..I've pretty much made up my mind not to enter....but here's the situation:
I won a cruise from a karaoke contest last year at a bowling alley bar in New Hampshire. W.Lebanon..a "city", but more like the size of a town compared to other cities in the US. There are a limited number of singers in this area (if you've listened to any of my subs, this might explain why I won!...I'm not very spectacular) The contest this year is part of a "National Bowling Karaoke Idol" contest and the winner goes to nationals in FL. Last year it was just a local contest. So my dilema is do I enter or not? All the singers who will be there were probably my competitors last year..and the judges will probably be the same too. I don't think I have a chance because no matter how well I do I don't think they'd have me win simply because I won last year. Plus I don't want my fellow karaokers (also my friends) to be upset if I won twice. NOT that I'm confident I'd win! Not at all!!
Whaddya think??

I would say to go ahead and do the contest. Just do it to have a good time, don't try to second guess what the judges will do or what the audeince reaction will be. No matter what happens there will always be complainers to complain about the outcome. If they don't want you in it because you won last year they will put that into their contest rules.
By the way a friend of mine that sings at my Karaoke show in Williamstown, VT. is also trying to get into that contest. I thought she said it was a Duet Contest, maybe that ones over, she wanted me to sing with her but I wasn't able to make it, my show is on thursdays and time is limited.

This has nothing to do with ethics. You won last year, that was last year. Now it is a new contest. If you win again, enjoy the trip!! If you don't, you had fun. BTW, I notice karaoke nights sometimes being called "shows" by some. Is there a reason for that? Half of the bar I go to is pool, but those who come to play don't call it a "pool show." I don't see anything about it that is a show, unless we are going to be getting paid to entertain others.

Believe me when you see a show you will know it. A gig is a gig but a show is always a showcase event . Come check out some of my shows and you will have a better understanding...peace love karaoke

The Bar I am at has a pool tounament that is going on every Thursday while we are doing Karaoke as well.
Almost everyone that comes to the Karaoke Show is performing for the Audience, unlike a pool game that you are playing against another person.
We do have a few singers who when they get on stage and start to sing will even stop the pool games and turn every head in the place until they are finished, haven't ever had the pool games stop everyone in the place and captivate them.
We have been hired by one of the local Malls to do the sound system for a Fashoin Show put on by 4 major clothing chains and they want us to showcase our better singers for the Entertainment, before, during intermission and after the Fashion Show, Yes it is a Show by the definition of a Show.

My show is a show
I do all kinds of Characters in Costume Sinatra, Martin, Diamond ,stewart, and many more. I get paid for Just me to sing for 4 Hours complete with Props. It is a blast and I have many offers for new shows each time I do one....I have even went as far as cutting down on the Karaoke part of my show to just having a one or two of my expert singers fill in during costume changes. The show is very structured. actually Im going to just do my shows from now on and no more Karaoke.. $$$$ a show is good enough for me without spinning disc's for others...but then again it is a long night up on stage.
just my 2 cents oh yea I have some songs posted in my SS Profile they aint the best but Im getting alot better than when they were recorded...all in all it's all for fun.

why would anyone hire you in the first place if you werent entertaining anybody?

MrOctober I listened to one of your subs, you sound similar to one of our regulars that used to sing in a variety show that plays all over New England, mostly at camp grounds and such. They usually get more money for thier show then most Bands get around here for a night.
Very smooth voice.

Thanks Bowfishin
Yes I get paid alot more than just doing a Karaoke Gig prolly just as much as a Band except I only have to split it one way ....I do pick up the Bar tab for anyone who fills in for my costume change times.
in a time when Karoke gigs can go for as little as $75.00 a night or do it for beer ...it's nice to come away with a specialty show and pull in close to $350.00 a show a few nights a week ...it's great extra Play money.

Do the contest, for sure...
And contests are by their nature more of a "Show" than anything else.
Work out your stage presence and tune it up, and turn it up..
Above all, have fun with it.. When they see you having fun, they have fun too.

Go do your stuff. What the heck if you won last year. A contest is a contest, if you do good, and the judges like, you WIN, so what.

I host karaoke in the New Hampshire/Vermont area and "think" I saw the event you won last year. Did you sing Kansas City? If so, you did an excellent job and don't think twice about entering... A couple friends of mine were also in that competition, it was really fun!
I host karaoke in your area... you should come to a show sometime!
By the way, how was the cruise?

Lily, Go for it! Don't concern yourself with opinions beyond your control. If the contest is honest, Then all previous criteria is moot.
Only your present performance should be judged.
