Yeah, let's not talk about what years do to people.

I just try to stay away from mirrors and calendars & try to pretend I'm still 25.

I'm thinking that a statement like the one I first made in this thread is more likely...... DRUNKEN legend. *lol*

Strangest thing. How I think I sound while I'm singing, is so incredibly different than the horrendous sounding voice on the tape recorder. I never understood this.

Which is it others hear ? or do they hear something entirely different ?

How do we know what we sound like ?

You have just voiced EXACTLY what has made me so shy to sing for SO many years. *You really never know.*

What I hear when I play my songs back is not ever what I thought was coming out when I sang it. Must be the same with everyone.

I think I actually got more shy after first hearing myself. Granted, it was on an old tape recorder..... but I recall asking my mom "Is that what I really sound like"...... cause yeah, it was different sounding than what my ears had always heard as I sang. And when my mom said..."yeah, that sounds like you".... I was devastated.

But I think those who singing is very important to will always feel that "What if" about their singing. To this day.... it takes me a few songs to warm up at karaoke, even though most of the local crowd knows me now. I'm just a bucket of nerves when I first get up, scared to death of what others really hear when I open my mouth. And I've been out quite a bit over the last few years. But I guess that will always remain. (??)

I'm starting to wonder if what's missing in my singing, or learning to start singing is:

1- trying to push my voice into a register that isn't mine, yet is that of my favorite rock vocalists. (There's a tendency for males that favor rock vocals to try to push their voice into a tenor range, even if they are baritones). Basically, I don't know what style singing is best suited for my range, and ability.

2- Not learning how to breath while I try to sing

3- Not singing diaphragmatically, all headvoice. which would make sinus probs more noticeable.

4- lack of confidence.

...no urban legend here...what you think you sound like is a slightly lower key than your actual voice...you can cup your hands in front of your mouth as you sing and deflect the sound to your ears...and hear your actual voice....yet its still not actual because of all the resonating that occurs in your head then picked up by your ear internally...first time I heard myself recorded I actually went out and bought another tape record...same result...shocking for sure....

And don't worry about confidence...the worst that can happen is make a complete fool of yourself and have fun doing it....many much worse than you have preceeded you for sure.....

when I play for friends/relatives it still takes me two or three songs to stop shakin'.....really bad stage fright....but ok from then on.....

Myself I try to stay within my Baritone range....your better off being you than trying to be someone slse....if the range of a song I want to do is too high, I tune down my guitar and that brings the song into my key...or your can play the song at run time in a lower key...or use audition to lower the key of a music track to better match your own range....

hmmm Urban singing myths...

well.. Lemons aren't good for your voice. I know some people who think sucking on a lemon before you sing is good, but it actually strips your chords of moisture, and drys you out.. I'm sure a little lemon in your tea won't hurt, but for the most part, acidic fruit like that is not good...

drinking plenty of water IS good for your voice. No, it does not immediately impact your folds because it has to be absorbed by your system, so it's not a "quick fix" when you are about to sing, but a maintenace thing where if you drink a gallon of water everyday you will be more hydrated as will your vocal folds, and this protects them and keeps them healthy (i'm bad at this.. i really need to start drinking my water)

Smoking IS bad for your voice, (and just bad for you in general) BUT it does add a "raspy" quality that some like to the sound.. that raspyness is just the degredation of your chords though and the damage makes it harder to control your voice or be as versatile

Alcohol is bad too for the same reason that lemons are.. it dries out your folds. I have on occasion taken a small drink before singing live at a gig because it will loosen me up a bit, but I have to be careful because it is VERY drying...

Is it true that tape recorders, and playback devices are very bad for your voice, and tend to do damage ?

Only if you don't dice them up small enough before consuming.

Well, If you folks are really unlucky, I'll start singing, really like it (yet sound abominable) and join here submitting 60 songs every few days. You see, just like my obsessional yacking, I might find I like to sing

(Pretty sure this will work)

uh oh...what have we done?!!

Here's the thing...we would really love to have you sing for us, but then you might not take the time to post much and we really don't want to miss out on that...so don't worry about singing. Really, it's ok!!

Ya know, I bet you aren't as bad as you think you are. Record a clip and let Gilly hear it...she'll let you know the scoop!

I might be able to sing choir type stuff. Stuff I really can't stand. My voice is really clean. I need gravel, and to learn how to sing from my chest cavity, and not my nostrils
