bbqbutch,
I never had a problem with the Sony 300 players but when I switched to the Sony 400 players after about 6 months I began having the same problems with one of the 400's as you are describing. It looked like a groove was being ground into the disc about 3/8" from the edge. Before I caught it I suffered a lot of damage. Tried contacting Sony, called all of their repair centers around me, they wouldn't do anything about it. They said it was because I moved the machines from venue to venue. I switched to Pioneer 301's and have never had anymore problems.
The damage I had really didn't make sense. One of the machines was worse than the other two. The "scratch groove" goes all the way around the disc's but I know many of them hadn't been played. How did the get scratched all the way around if they hadn't spinned?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you had better get them out of the Sony! If you find out what the problem is I'd love to know, I've got 3 Sony 400's sitting on a shelf.
Hope you have better luck!
JB
