I've gotten enough cdg's now that I'm getting a real workout everytime I carry my cdg cases to a gig. I want to switch over to a laptop or something. A guy I work with is willing to sell me his laptop with a 20 gig hard drive. Without any kind of external hard drive, more or less, how many cdg tracks might I be able to fit on this drive.

Also, What would y'all recommend for an external hard drive? Dell has a 250 gig for $280. I've seen some on ebay for around $300 (also 250 gigs).

20gb as a C drive, depending on the Operating System, would give you 10-15gb of space, assuming no other software is installed on it.

The average "mp3+g" is between 4mb and 6mb in space.

You can put a lot on there, but I would recommend an external hard drive, for space expansion.

http://www.shelbycs.org/technology/howb ... abyte.html

Megabyte (MB) = approximately 1,000 KB or 1,000,000 bytes
Technically a Megabyte is 2 to the 20th power (1,048,576) bytes.
.
Gigabyte = approximately 1000 Megabytes = 1,000,000 Kilobytes = Billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes)
Technically a Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes.

If you have 10gb free, and figure the average converted song is 5mb, you'll get 2097 tracks!!

IF my math is correct.
1,048,576 X 10 DIVIDED by 5,000 = 2097.xxx

So figuring 5MB per mp3+g, I should look at it like around 200 songs per 1 gig. Right?

So where could I find an external drive for let's say 4 or 5 brontobytes?
Just kidding, I'd settle for a single terabyte. I figure that would give me enough room for about 200,000 songs!

For my shows I carry complete backup of my files on a 80 gig western digital, and I'm currently using 35 gigs for about 10,000 songs. I use this in case my main hard drive crashes during a show. I can be back in business in a couple of minutes.

I use a kma file format with MTU's Hoster program. The compression may be different with MP3+G.

There are some great deals running on externals. I just picked up a Western Digital 250 gig External Drive for $179 after rebates from Circuit City for my 2nd system. It's a little overkill but figured I couldn't pass up that kind of deal. Eventually I will use the extra space.

I watch online at Circuit City, Best Buy, Comp USA, and Fry's

Watch for the "Online Only" Specials! Sometimes these are only available for a couple of days, and many times the stores do not even know they exist. You can place your order and pay online then pick it up at a store nearest to you.

I Have A Question>>>>>>

I just Backed up all my CDG's on my 160gig External Hard drive.
I am not using my hardrive for my show as of yet.

The question is >>> What if someone Steals my CDG's?... I then Have no Proof That I bought them.

although Id still run my show anyway I was just thinking about the legalities..... Just incase the Karaoke Cops show up at one of my show's..

Anyone got any Ideas on this?

Thanks
Michael

If the originals are stolen and they are not insured for replacement, I have one word for you - Screwed. No originals, no play.

Timber is correct. Without the originals you are screwed!

Everything that I have read on the subject states that you must prove you own the originals. Reciepts are not acceptable proof.

For this reason I keep my CDG's in a Safe.

right now, you can get 200gb drives for a mere $80 from www.outpost.com (Fry's Electronics)... and a usb case from other sites for $30!

$110 is a helluva price for an external drive.

If you just 'HAVE' to have a full Terabyte of disc storage look at the Snap 4500 series. A 1 Terabyte server in that format is only about $4500 or so (we just bought 5 of them for work).

Personally, I'd look at other alternatives myself. I'm pricing servers and found a nice 2U box for $699 that looks like it would be perfect and will mount in a rack (2x80GB hard drives).
