I use an Audio 2000 AKJ 7050 mixer/amp. Lately the sound has started to degrade slightly. Occasionally there is a little distortion from one of the channels. This happens even at moderate volumes. Most of my singers haven't noticed, but I know the problem will only get worse. I have two complete systems and have narrowed the problem down to the amp. My questions are: 1) Are there any steps I can take to try to fix this problem? 2) Is it worth sending the amp back for repair, or should I just write it off and buy another. The amp is about 1 1/2 years old and has been used for about 75 shows.

I would send it in and have it cleaned.

Unsure what kind of ventilation you have, but that heat on a sucker, especially a "mixer amp" like that is a killer.

You might try moving the speaker cables to the other channel, but I would definately get another amp for a "swap out" while the first one is being cleaned / repaired.

Have you swapped the speaker cords around?

Don't do anything at the speakers themselves. Change the left to right & right to left on the amp. Did the distortion change in the speakers? If so, it's probably your amp (possibly a cord, but doubtful). If the distortion stays in the same speaker, your amp is fine & the speaker or some of it's components are going out.

I have switched the cables around and the distortion switches to the other speaker. I've used a new set of cables with the same result. So I know it's not the cables or the speakers. I do have the amp in a case with the cdg player right on top. There is only about 1/2 inch space on all sides. It does have a fan and I have never noticed any excess heat. If this is the problem, have I done permanent damage? Has anyone had experience sending equipment back to Audio 2000 for repair? I have the same amp for a backup and that one sounds great.

just take it into a local center to have it cleaned and serviced. they'll clean the contacts, and lubricate things, and tell you if it's shot or not.

This tells me you have a speaker problem. if you switch speakers, and it follows the speaker. then it is the speaker. if ot stays on the same channel. then it is in the amp, preamp, or player.

He switched the cords at the amp, he didn't switch the speakers around. So what was once feeding the right speaker is now feeding the left speaker. Thus the distortion was in (say) the right speaker, it's now in the left speaker, the speaker is no longer the culprit.

OK..... if that is the case switch the inputs, and see if the distortion switches channels. if it does it is in the player. I usually do this with all the components first before I send something off.

Its really a killer if you send in the amp, and the mixer, player or the bbe is the culprit.

He also stated his back-up amp/mixer sounded fine when switched out. So the culprit probably isn't in the player.
