whewwww boy...
that's a can o' worms
Might want to take a look back through the Singers Forum. You'll find lots of um.. 'differing' opinions on the subject.

Quote: Wow.. so according to the shows YOU run, only about 25% would be considered 'bad singers' and 70% of the people are pretty good - darned good! That means the 'average' singer, is pretty good! I'm actually surprised at those numbers (not doubting you here, just truly surprised).
Yup..... I HONESTLY have to say .. that at least 70% of the people that sing with us... regularly do a good job or better. Not saying they don't ocassionally have a bad song.. or hit a sour note or two... but yup.... as a rule.. they do a good job and are IMO "average" singers (myself included).
Mind you, Seby.... we also have some that are tough on the ears.... and the drunker some of the good ones get... the "less good" they sing.... .....
but overall, I think 70% can be called "average/good".....meaning sing the song relatively well... enjoyable to listen to.
ADDITION:: Guess I should also say ..... we have about 60-70 people who sing with the show... and usually get about 25-30 a night on the average.

Sorry Shotgun, I don't now your real name. I agree with you, I think in general, most people are average to pretty damn good and for the most part a pleasure to listen too. The thing I really dislike the most, is not people who are off key (unless they are so off the scale it's not even funny !), it's the people who feel they have to SHOUT every word, it's darn tough on the ears, just nasty. But sometimes even people who are below average in the actual singing department, make up for it by having fun, dancing, really getting into the song, which makes it more enjoyable for the audience. It's no use having a stop you in your tracks, really need to listen to this dude voice and being as lifeless as a soccer post

Well... at least you weren't the guy obsessed with Baywatch! AND he watches because of the singing talent of David Hasselhoff! *brakes screeeeech!* (He was quite serious!) THEN... proceeded to SING a David Hasselhoff song! OK? I guess David IS popular... somewhere in the world!
Sorry... took a little detour on the thread topic... what was it again?

syber asks what is an average singer hmmm now i am thinking...someone who carries a tune well, knows their capabilities and doesn't try to get too fancy with what songs they choose, cause you give an average singer a song which requires too much vocal acrobats or songs with varying vocal ranges and they gonna sound below average.
If we are talking about the showcase....being brutally honest i believe 90 per cent of the singers are average...i can name on 2 hands people in MY EYES who use the showcase i believe have a future in singing beyond karaoke/local bands.
we are all quite choosey about songs we perform whether we sub for fun or critique cause we all have 1 thing in common we want to do the best and show the best we can do which for many takes time to sub a good recording.
I do think the showcase is not really the place to be able to judge what's average or not....remember all of these are recordings and we are all capable of editing our songs....i.e singing the same line over and over again till we do get it right.
the true test is actually listening to singers live....you only get 1 shot at it.
That soon dictates average from below average.

I've thought about that point as well and I've come to this conclusion... Yes, a person CAN redo over and over a recorded submission, BUT there are also many drawbacks to a recorded song over a 'live' song. For example, in a live performance (unless it's pretty bad) most little booboos pretty much go by so quickly that one doesn't pay much attention to them, whereas with a recording... a person can go back and listen to the song over and over to pick out errors.
(I know I do when I record something... thus my reluctance to record) but of course, we do (or can anyway) learn from our mistakes, so I try to take it as a 'learning experience'. heh
It's true that a person can't really 'fairly' judge whether a person is generally an average singer (or whatever) from SS, unless of course you have quite a few subs to listen to, then you start to get a pretty good idea.
I agree, I would have a hard time finding 10 people here that I would consider 'star quality' singers, but most are 'not bad - darn good'.

MARY ROACH IS MY HERO!
Anyone who can talk openly about the voices is cool with me. Now here's a question:
Is Mary a below average, average, or above average singer?
This is something you must think about.....
My God! The sarcasm is so thick you need an aqua lung to breathe!!

! sarcasm aside, it's a good question. So, based on what folks here have said, I would have to call her a 'below average' singer (because she couldn't basically stay on pitch, or even key for that matter, and her diction was so bad I couldn't understand her - 'dancing' aside).
Ya know what though, I thought that 'boxer' girl was pretty darned good. I'm surprised they didn't let her through. :p I bet they didn't show LOTS of 'good' singers who didn't get through for some reason or another.

OL!! That was kinda freaky wasn't it?
You know the 'sad' thing? When she slipped into her 'normal' voice between all the oophing and grunting, I could tell she wouldn't have sounded half bad if she hadn't been over acting to the point of ridiculousness. Ah well...

I think the comment about this being a kind of a dangerous topic was accurate. In general, people who do wish to perform and get some kind of feedback, do not wish to be average. Unfortunately, by the very definition of the term, most singers are.
Now there are different areas of musical artistry. Even in singing, you have people who sing in church, or church choir, in the school choir, in
musicals, etc. In our church and in the school choir you had to audition.
I remember at about 12 years old singing to the piano, it was pretty much whether you could reasonably carry a tune and stay on pitch.
From there they decided whether you were a bass, tenor, alto, or soprano. In church, all of us had to read music if we sang anything other than the lead soprano part. Since we later had an integrated black and white church where the black people brought in their own songbook which had music to rock your world, there were very few singers in the choir at that point who were average.
A few criteria that are very important here in determining what a singer is, is that simply opening your mouth and uttering some kind of pitched noise is not really singing. Birds sing. Whales do. But many people don't.
Karaoke wise, go to a bar and spend an evening jotting down notes after each performance. Pick out maybe 5 really impressive singers, and 5 really bad singers. I would say the rest are average.
We watched an American Idol auditon with this perky little blonde who got up and gyrated and belted out a truly painful performance. (I have now been told this is the infamous Mary you have all been talking about) After they all shook their heads and Simon said, you are the worst singer I have ever heard. The girl replied, but all my friends told me I am incredible, and have great talent, and I don't care what you say, I know I am good, I am going on to make a hit record. She was in truth ghastly. Even painful. Off key, melody nowhere in site, and she stomped off cursing Simon.
She wasn't average. Most of American idol contestants are a little below average. They are there for entertainment value or looks. I have listened to more true talent in this Karaoke forum than I have seen in all the American Idols shows. And in here I would have to bend my rule of 5, because here are at least 20 very good singers in here.
There are a few not really singers, but sing for fun. And then there are a group who I would say are average. During their performances they have their moments. On some songs they sound pretty good in parts, and then a bit weaker in others.
Although Karaoke, like any medium has become more competitive, still the average singer, can post and get comments. Yet average singers can have huge popularity followings, and despite an average performance, be rated perfect.
There is no real cure for this. Posting you were incredible in a don't rate me, is not considered a critique. Posting a not incredible in the same comment is banned. Both are critques.
So average spills over into the world in every pursuit and artform. And for many reasons, people will rate that which is average as excellent. Perhaps, it is in the definition of good, or excellent we have the difference. Some people really enjoy what is a technically average performance. Some people really like personalities so much, that they just like a person's voice or their music even if it is average.
To me really good is something that for the most part people secretly all know is good. It is a performane that blows you away, and you go back and play it again and again. I have records, when there were records and tapes, I literally wore out.
You can be average and be a performer and be paid to sing and have people tell you, you are great. You can be average and no matter what genre you do, people who just like you personally will feel that it is a good and friendly thing to encourage you.
Who doesn't like to get a good critique and who doesn't feel a little twinge when there is something not so good you have done.
There is a professional average and a subjective average. And finally, sigh, unfortunately, it is different for every single person, although very good tends to be a little more easy to define.
I began my life as a poor singer, worked my way to average in a garage band, and have spent many years, trying to be more. Who knows? Someday maybe I will make it.

A simple answer is:
It's all in the ear of the beholder... what I may think is average someone else may think is star quality.
Just like I may think purple is the BEST color in the world - but the next person may dispise it.
There is no right or wrong answer here but like I said before, it's interesting to learn why some of us comment the way we do on subs and what criteria we use to come up with these comments.
